You hear a juicy story from a friend, who heard it from another friend, who heard it from a person in the hall, who read it on a note passed in math class,1 was written by somebody who probably just made it up.
Chances are, rumors and gossip are always floating around your school or community. That's totally normal. After all, everyone gossips,2 parents, celebrities, and politicians. It's part of how we communicate and stay 3 ( connect) with other people's lives. But what is the difference between a rumor and gossip?
A rumor is a piece of information or a story that has not been verified, meaning that the person 4 (tell) it doesn't know if it's true or false. It might be true,it might be partially true and partially made up,or it might be totally made up.
Gossip,on the other hand,is a little different. Gossip is talk that is somehow "juicy", meaning it deals 5 subjects that are 6 (shock) or personal. Gossip is usually about things like love and 7 (relation) ,or private things that people don't talk 8 (open) about. When a piece of gossip is known to be false,it's a lie, plain and simple. If a piece of gossip about somebody is true,it can still be very hurtful because that information may be private and personal.
Sometimes, rumors and gossip are 9 (harm) ,but at other times they can be very hurtful to individuals, friendships, and whole groups of people. Did you know that10 (spread) rumors and gossip about someone is a form of bullying?

Trust has been considered as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. 1 Sometimes,it takes years, even a complete lifetime,to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?
2 With whom will you share things that you don't want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself.
Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends. 3 This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable. The friends who trust you will never forget to include you in the important decisions of their life.
Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. 4 While some people find it difficult to forgive and forget, your friends will never have problems moving on. It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.
There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. 5 Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. You can determine that they trust you and believe in your beliefs,if they side with you when you need them the most.

listening to the clay
When I was a young girl,my father would drop me off at my art class every Saturday morning. Classes were held in the basement of an old building that had been converted into an art school. I loved that basement.
I was determined that my own children would take Saturday art classes. I love those mornings, sitting next to my children and watching them clay(黏土) into dragons, bears, etc. If the g/aze (釉) didn’t turn out like we thought, our wise teacher would tell us with a smile that our unexpected results were “gifts from the (爐) .” She Was encouraging US not to judge our work or ourselves so harshly (苛刻地) but to be free to accent unexpected results willingly. She let US be open to new ways of seeing things, creating, and solving problems, without judgment.
My son started class at age six. When he was handed his first ball of clay,he pushed his finger deeply into the center and said, “Mom,I can feel the heartbeat of the clay." This was the beginning of a lifetime of learning from my children. Years later, when I got particularly frustrated with my inability to make the clay take the shape I had imagined,I remembered my son’s discovery. I took the pwlse (脈搏) of the clay. I asked what it wanted to be. I discovered that my best pieces are done in partnership with the clay.
The work I did in the art school helps my later work. I have learned to take the pulse of life and take note of what other people want and need. Now,wherever I am,I remain open to the “gifts from the kiln.”

Looking for a simple way to bum more calories while walking? Researchers found that walking at varying speeds can bum up to 20 percent more calories. It is one of the first to measure the calories burned at various walking speeds. “Most of the existing literature has been on constant-speed walking. This study is a bi^ missing piece,” said Manoj Srinivasan,co-author of the study. “Measuring the calories burned while changing speeds is very important — people don’t live their lives on (跑步機(jī)) and do not walk at constant speeds."
The researchers found that up to thirty percent of the energy we use during normal daily walking could be due to the energy needed to start and stop walking. Walking at any speed costs some energy, bilt when you* re changing the speed, ?ou will get the biggest effect. Changing the kinetic (運(yùn)動的) energy of a person requires more work from the legs and that process certainly bums more energy.
The study also confirmed the researchers’ prediction that people walk slower when covering shorter distances and increase their paces as distance increases. This finding could have some effects in the field of health, where the speed measured within a certain distance is used as a sign of a patient's progress. “What we’ve shown is that the distance over which you make them walk matters,” said Srinivasan. You’11 get different walking speeds for different distances.”
For more tips on how to bum more calories when walking,Srinivasan offers some simple advice: walk in a way that feels unnatural. “How do you walk in a manner that bums more energy? Just do weird things. Walk with a backpack, walk with weights on your legs or walk in a curve as opposed to a straight line,” he said.
9. Why does research on walking and changing speeds matter?
A. It can save lots of energy.
B. It's good for the environment.
C. It can help build up our bodies.
D. It's close to the way people walk in everyday life.
10. The second paragraph serves as .
A. an explanation for the study
B. the background of the study
C. an example of the study
D. an introduction to the study
11. When patients change the speed of walking,.
A. they are in poor health
B. they are likely to recover
C. they have weight problems
D.they may need more walking practice
12. What does the underlined word “weird” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

John Sand was one of the most influential teachers I have ever met. During high school,he taught me more than any other teacher had been able to.
He developed unusual methods of teaching. He did not give US homework on the first day and have it due the next; instead,he gave US a homework schedule for the term and left it up to US to remember to do it. By doing so,he prepared US for life after high school, where it would be up to US to make our own work schedules.
Mr. Sand was a family man. He made use of whatever time we had left in class to show US his latest vacation videos or his children's sports videos. It was nice to see,in a world where a broken home is the average home,a man who balanced his family and his career so nicely.
Mr. Sand always encouraged US to get out of our little close-minded society of Wethersfield and explore the cultures of the world. He would tell US stories of his travels across Europe and his adventures around the US. Many teachers just forced the idea of college and ignored our heed to reach outside of what we know.
Many people may not ever have a teacher like Mr. Sand. I feel sorry for them. Mr. Sand taught me things that went beyond the curriculum (課程) and let me know how powerful a teachers influence could be.
1. How did Mr. Sand deal with students, homework?
A. .He always avoided giving it.
B. He punished those failing to finish it.
C. He wanted students to be responsible for it.
D. He spent enough time every day checking it.
2. What do we know about Mr. Sand from Paragraph 3 ?
A. He only had one child.
B. He had a great love for life.
C. He liked doing sports after work.
D. He valued his job more than his family.
3. Mr. Sand shared his tours around Europe with his students to .
A. lead them to know more
B. encourage them to become brave
C. inspire them to care for others
D. show them how to spend their free time
4. What would be the best title for the text?.
A. Teachers I like best
B. An outstanding teacher
C. Teaching,a great career
D. How to be a caring teacher
