An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you're not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. 1       That's what hospitality is all about―making people feel at home when they're not.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests feel restless. For some countries, giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety. 2       Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their hosts. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers or candies.

American hospitality begins at home, especially when it involves food. 3       Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food. Plan to arrive on time,or else call to inform your hosts of the delay.

When you've had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you're the guest, your hosts may not let you. After an hour or so of general chat,it's probably time to leave. 4       It's more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour.

Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. 5       As one 19th century French writer put it, "The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest. " While you're staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. And they may even invite you back!

   A. During the dinner conversation,it's customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal.

   B. When you're the guest, you should just make yourself at home.

   C. But in American culture,a guest is not obligated to bring a present.

   D. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee.

   E. And above all, don't go snooping around the house.

   F. Your host family will appreciate your consideration.

   G. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days.

Three passions, simple 1 overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing 2 love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the 3       ( suffer) of mankind.

I have sought love,first,4       it brings ecstasy. I have sought it,next, because it relieves the terrible loneliness. I have sought it,finally, because in the union of love I have seen,in a mystic miniature (縮影) ,the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is 5        I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what―at last―I have found.

6       equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much,I have achieved.

Love and knowledge,so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heaven. But always it brought me 7        to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate (回響) in my heart. Children in famine, victims 8         (torture) by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again 9        the chance 10         (offer) me.

We were guided to the playground, after that the teacher made us stand in several lines and instructed us with some safety warning. Then we walked into the test center and started to warming up. I did the preparations carefully to make sure my body would function proper when running. Finally the running began and the competition was fierce. I kept close behind a fastest student in my group. I told myself many times not to give up when feel exhausted, and I made it. I was out of breath after the run. However,I learned perseverance means a lot in life.

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. 1       But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with,an individual will have a low level of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. 2       If an individual is disabled environmentally,it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individuaFs intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins,Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died. 3       Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. 4       He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated (刺激) intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I. Q. was 125,twentyfive points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. 5

   A. So the second factor is what happens to the individual.

   B. Meanwhile,Mark was adopted by a poor foster home.

   C. Then they were placed in separate foster homes (收養(yǎng)家庭) .

   D. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others.

   E. Mark was raised in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college.

   F. Secondly, whether you are brought up in a city or a poor village is also significant.

   G. Given equal opportunities, the twins would have tested at roughly the same level.

Dear Mr. Seaton,Thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to London. It is the first time that I had seen the Tower or any of the other famous sight. If I'd gone alone,I could have seen nearly as much, because I shouldn't have known my way about.

The weather was splendid on that day,as I thought was rare. I still remember some people told me that in Britain there was weather and no climate. At the same day,it might snow in the morning, rain at the noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. So I think I was lucky.

I think the river trip was the best thing of all. London really came alive to me as we saw it from the Thames during that wonderful journey down Greenwich. It was all tremendous exciting―a day that I shall never forget.

Thank you for giving I such a great birthday treat.

Yours sincerely,Linda Chen
