US president Barack Obama told students that it takes hard work in school to prepare for a rewarding career in his “back to school” speech,   36  last Tuesday in Virginia, US. Here is excerpt (節(jié)選)from his speech:
I know that sometimes, you get the  37    that you can be rich and successful without any hard work –  38   your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things. But the truth is, being successful is   39   .You won’t love every subject you study. Not every homework assignment will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at    40     the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most   41  .JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was   42  12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was    43    his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said. “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures  44   you. No one’s    45  being good at things; you become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of    46    . It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re  47     , even when you’re discouraged, and when you feel like other people have given up on yourself, you won’t give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

38. A.“ ---”引導(dǎo)的是that you can be rich and successful without any hard work的同位語(yǔ),所以也要用that引導(dǎo),對(duì)前面的內(nèi)容進(jìn)行解釋。

Cut off, “ 切斷(電源,水等的供應(yīng)”;cut down, “ 減少,砍伐”; cut in ,“插嘴,打斷”;cut from, “ 從...中剪掉,裁掉”。
44.B.根據(jù)上下文,意思是“你不能讓失敗限制你,或給你下定義,說(shuō)你不能取得成功”。confirm。“確認(rèn)”;identify,“辨認(rèn)身份”。
45.D.根據(jù)下文you become good at things through hard work,可知“沒有人天生就擅長(zhǎng)于一些事情”。
46.A.根據(jù)Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of       ,weakness與strength正好意義相對(duì),B項(xiàng)courage 與下文It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new 意思重復(fù)了,所以B項(xiàng)不對(duì)。

There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power(原子能).
First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.
Second, there is the problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes nonradioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.
Third, there may occur the danger of a leak(泄漏) or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear program. However, it can happen.Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster(災(zāi)難) is extremely high.
1.Which of the following is FALSE?
A.It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.
B.It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.
C.The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.
D.Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.
2.The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are ________.
A.easy      B.impossible         C.reasonable        D.ineffective
3.What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The power station is a safe place.
B.The dangers of nuclear energy can be prevented.
C.The general public are strongly against the nuclear program.
By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to cause much worry.
4.What is this passage about?
A.Uses of nuclear power.          B.Dangers from nuclear power.
C.Public anger at nuclear power.  D.Accidents caused by nuclear power.

Ban the Band(樂(lè)隊(duì))?
Every year, our school has a dance for all the students. It’s a little funny seeing friends in clean shoes and trousers or colorful    36  ,instead of the usual school uniform.
Most of us think the dance is great   37 —even the teachers enjoy being there. 38 ,two weeks ago someone said that there would be no    39   band this year—only CDs.
“I don’t    40   it!”Amy cried out during the lunch break.
“Someone said the school couldn’t    41   a band, and they think it’s too noisy anyway,”added Daniel.
“Well,I don’t think it’s    42   enough without a band!”declared Angela,“and I’m going to see what can be done.”
Angela was as good as her    43  .In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster who agreed to give the   44  some more thought. And he suggested that one   45  for having a band was to increase the price of each ticket from $5 to $10.Angela had to   46   out whether the students would like to do that.
“I need all of you to help me,”she  47  to our group before school the next day.“Mr.Berry gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their   48   about the band and the extra cost.”
49   the day we asked around as Angela suggested, and wrote down people’s feelings about the band and the cost.We were amazed how much    50   there was for the band and everyone agreed to pay the extra $5.
“I’m surprised,”smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the    51  .“I really thought that only a few people     52   their band and that the cost would be too high.OK,Angela, your next    53   is to find a good band and line them up for the dance.”
Angela was all smiles and    54   the news to Amy and Daniel.“You’re    55  ,”smiled Daniel to Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.

Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a worthwhile activity.
Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables picked at their best are superior to those vegetables purchased from markets. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can prove a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.
Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing(吸收人的) for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families.
Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening.
One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house so the gardener can work in it at odd moments.
Soils for vegetables should be easily broken up and porous(能滲透的) for quick water drainage and good aeration(透氣). A deep, fine, sandy good quality soil is best.
Usually the hoe owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.

Forests have always been useful and important to man who makes use of them in many ways. Every day trees are serving man everywhere. Trees supply man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats, bridges and so on. Furniture such as desks, chairs and beds is made of wood. Trees can stop man from terrible heat. They're also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains.
If there were no trees, heavy rains would wash away the rich top soil that is so important to plants. The result is that the land will become a desert. There are plenty of desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas used to be very rich areas, but man in the past had no enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down too many trees in the area where they lived and never planted new ones. It’s the place where smart people make smart machines work even smarter. But for the people who work in it, Silicon Valley (硅谷) is more than just a high technology hothouse. It’s also in the heart of sunny California, a great place to start a family and raise kids. What could be better?
But something is happening to the children. Up until the age of two they develop normally. Their proud parents watch and smile as they take their first steps and speak their first words. But then everything seems to go backwards. The children become locked into their own small world, unable to communicate at all.
They call it the “curse of Silicon Valley,” but the medical name for the condition is autism(孤獨(dú)癥). It used to be thought that autism was a mental illness. Now doctors are sure that it is a disease transmitted genetically (遺傳). It seems that the people leading the communications revolution are having children who cannot communicate at all.
But even the parents have trouble communicating. Asperger’s Syndrome (綜合癥) is connected with autism. People who have it are highly intelligent and often brilliant with numbers or systems but have no social skills, which makes Asperger’s sufferers into excellent computer professionals. Unfortunately, many of the children of two Asperger’s parents in Silicon Valley seem to be developing serious autism.
There is little anyone can do. And there is no cure in sight. Some argue that no cure should be found.“It may be that autistics are essentially (本質(zhì)上) different from normal people, but that these differences make them valuable for the evolution (進(jìn)化) of the human race,” says Dr Kirk Wilhelm of the University of California.“To remove the genes (基因) for autism could be terrible.
It seems that the children of Silicon Valley are paying the price of genius.
小題1:A person who has autism usually _____.

Doomed beauties such as Cleopatra and Manilyn Monroe were far from alone in their misery. Very attractive people tend to form partnerships that are less stable and satisfying than those enjoyed by plain Janes.
According to research by Dr John Blaine of the University of Southern California, relationships between people whose professions largely depend on their appearances, such as models or actors, tend to end much faster than those between lawyers, doctors or students.
Blaine said the beautiful felt different from childhood. They are treated as special, which may create both arrogance(傲慢) and insecurity. All too often, beauty can be used as an alternative to education. Often they are pushed out of their class or town, told to go off and make their fortune in Hollywood or London and, when the majority fail, they have few talents(才能) to make a living.
Blaine added that beautiful people score poorly on the “big five” — the key factors American experts consider when helping distressed couples. These are neuroticism(神經(jīng)過(guò)敏), including anger and anxiety; extroversion(性格外向); openness to new experiences; agreeableness; and conscientiousness, or sticking by agreements they have made. Attractive people often see no reason to try to change until their looks start to fade.
Krista Sutherland, of the University of California Los Angeles, said partnerships that appeared to be perfect from the outside, such as the former “dream teams” of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise or Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, where backgrounds and aspirations(抱負(fù)) are often shared, did not necessarily lead to happiness.
