A new survey says an English person says “sorry” up to eight times a day. They say this word up to 2 ,920 times a year and 233,600 times in a lifetime.

As a reporter,I went to London last month. While I was walking on the streets,a young man ran by,brushing against my handbag. He went on his way,but turned back and said “sorry” to me. Even in a rush,he didn't forget to say “sorry”.

The next day,I went shopping alone. After I bought some bread, the shopkeeper was passing me the change. But I wasn’t ready for it and a coin dropped onto the ground. “Sorry,Madam ,” he said. At the same time,he began to pick it up. I was surprised why he said “sorry” to me.

After I went back to my hotel,I got to know that when something unpleasant happens in daily life, the English don't care much about who is wrong. Perhaps that is why English people hardly quarrel on the buses or streets.

  1. How many times does an English person say the word “sorry” a day?

2. What happened to the writer when she went to London?

3. Why did the coin drop onto the ground?

4. Who did the writer think should say “sorry” when the coin dropped?

5. What does the writer think of English people according to the last paragraph?

1. About eight times.

2. A young man ran by,brushing against her handbag.

3. Because the writer wasnH ready for it.

4. She thought she should say *4sorry" not the shopkeeper.

5. They are polite/friendly.

brush v.輕擦 change n. 零錢

quarrel v.

After I went back to my hotel,I got to know that when something unpleasant happens in daily life, the English don't care much about who is wrong.

在主句“I got to know... who is wrong” 中,“that when …who is wrong” 是賓 語從句,其中的when something. .. life是時(shí)間狀語從句,而 其后的who is wrong又是about的賓語從句。
