完形填空(共20小題;每小題1分;滿分20分)
My name is Amy. I’m a 25-year-old graduate student who likes yoga, home-decorating shows and eating spoonfuls of peanut butter   1  from the jar. Oh yeah, and I’m an iPhone addict.
I wasn’t always an addict. In fact, for many years I told myself I didn’t want a   2       cellphone. They seemed like too much work, always beeping, ringing and   3  attention. I was   4  content with my simple antique (古董,此處指舊手機(jī)), and I didn’t expect to change my mind any time soon.
However, about a year ago, I found myself envious of all those proud iPhone owners, cradling their shiny new phones and   5  all their friends. I started listening secretly to conversations about “iPhone apps”, feeling like a   6  listening to a language I couldn’t speak.
Eventually I couldn’t   7  my iPhone instinct (本能) any longer, and I welcomed my new iPhone into my life.
To my surprise, I suddenly found myself with a whole new circle of friends. They   8     my iPhone-related inquiries when my other friends couldn’t, and didn’t   9  when I bragged about (吹噓) all the things little Eloise (yes, I named her) could do.
However, I realized I had a problem when one day I found myself Google-mapping my way to my mailbox, which happens to be right outside my front door.
When I   10  the past few months, I couldn’t believe I didn’t see this coming. All the   11  signs were there. Eloise slept right beside me and was the first thing I   12 in the morning. I   13  my e-mail about 20 times a day. I also experienced   14  when I left poor Eloise in the change room at the gym.   15  she beeped and needed my response?
Okay, so I was addicted to my iPhone.
I decided   16  had to be done. But, as I quickly realized, iPhones are like   17  and not easy to quit.
Then, while taking the bus to work one day, I was   18  forced to quit—at least   19 . When I reached into my purse to grab Eloise, (to refer to my e-mail for only the seventh time that morning), I found her   20  by fever. She was so hot that I dropped her immediately back into my bag. When I picked her up again, she was gone.

Statuses are wonderful human inventions that enable us to get along with one another and to determine where we "fit" in society. In our everyday lives whenever we meet people, we always try to judge them in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman and so on.
Our statuses often vary with the people we meet, and change through life. Most of us can, at very high speed, assume(表現(xiàn)出) the different statuses that various situations require. Much of social communication consists of recognizing and selecting among proper statuses and allowing other people to assume their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people, based on a constant mental process of assessment and understanding. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather easily.
A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits the buyer can choose style and material. But an American is not free to choose the clothes of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society.
Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our wallet. Having made a choice within these limits, we can have certain changes made. But apart from small adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their shelves. Statuses too come ready-made, and the range of choice among them is limited.

Motorists over the age of 75 face compulsory tests of their eyesight and ability to drive under proposals being considered by ministers.
The biggest overhaul of motoring law in a generation could also lead to all drivers having to give assurances(保證)of their fitness to get behind the wheel every 10 years.
Other changes under consideration include issuing(發(fā)放)daylight driving licenses for motorists with night blindness, together with stricter checks on all drivers whose medical condition brought a threat to other road users.
It is understood that the proposals will be part of a review of the law governing the medical fitness of drivers that will be announced publicly by the summer.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is dealing with a rising number of motorists who are concerned that they have conditions---from failing eyesight to epilepsy---that could affect their driving.
In 2006, the DVLA dealt with 600,000 motorists whose physical ability to drive needed to be recertified(重新認(rèn)證), a 20 per cent rise on the previous year. With an ageing population, the biggest challenge is dealing with the rising number of elderly motorists. By 2021, there will be an estimated three million drivers over the age of 70 on Britain’s roads.
Drivers must renew their licenses at the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The applicant is legally required to tell the DVLA of any conditions that could weaken their ability behind the wheel.
Ministers have ruled out a compulsory maximum age for driving but will instead rely on tightening up the checks on motorists over the age of 75. The most likely option would be tests to ensure motorists were fit to drive. They would include an eyesight test and a cognitive(認(rèn)知) test that would prove a driver's ability to react to road signs, driving conditions, pedestrians and vehicles.
However, checks are likely to be tightened at all ages. The strictest controls are expected to be imposed(強(qiáng)制) on motorists of any age who have had a heart attack or stroke. They could have to produce a doctor's approval to resume(重新得到)driving. Anyone making a false declaration would be guilty of a criminal offence.

D.Drivers at all ages will be expected to provide their medical condition.
小題2:What is the biggest challenge to the traffic safety in Britain according to the writer?
A.Ageing population. B.Increasing number of cars.
C.Increasing number of elderly motorists.D.Driving conditions.
小題3:The underlined word “overhaul” in Paragraph 2 means _______.
A.changeB.considerationC.concernD.challenge
小題4:What can be learned from the passage?
A.There will be more and more aged drivers in Britain.
B.Anyone can get a driving license as long as he/she is in good health.
C.Health tends to decline as one gets old
D.It will be guilty to make a false declaration.

Catherine and I were on our way to our nephew’s birthday party one rainy Saturday morning, driving along what some people call moose(駝鹿) alley. It was early, there were few other cars on the road and we were looking forward to a good day with the family. Suddenly, a moose rushed across our path. Fortunately, a quick swerve(突然轉(zhuǎn)向) to the other lane prevented a full impact, with only a small collision on the right side of our car ripping off the mirror and knocking the moose to the pavement.
By the time I stopped and looked back in my rear view mirror, the moose was getting up. It ran into the bush. Shaken but unharmed, we both looked at each other shocked by what had happened. We knew that moose accidents had claimed many lives throughout the years, and that we had been very fortunate to escape with no personal injury or worse. After a quick check of our vehicle, we drove off.
Even though the moose accident lasted just a few seconds, we still remember it to this day. Why?
We had often talked about the frailty of life, the here today and gone tomorrow potential we all face, but it had never felt so real. And it wasn’t that we hadn’t had friends, relatives and colleagues die before, it was that this experience was much more personal. In a matter of seconds, lives can easily change.
The effect of that one near miss with death has been positive, and made us appreciate life. Each one of us has only a limited time on this Earth; no one can predict when your time will end. We should give thanks for each day, to see the sun rise again, and to know that you can accomplish and assist others to appreciate their life if they are caught in the “poor-me” syndrome(綜合癥狀).
小題1:What can we learn about the accident form the first two paragraphs?
A.Fortunately, they didn’t hit the moose.
B.They themselves were slightly injured.
C.Many people have died from similar accidents.
D.The author should be blamed for the accident.
小題2:What did the accident teach the author?
A.Being open to unexpected turns in life is important.
B.Life is long if you know how to use it.
C.Life is measured by thoughts and actions, not by time.
D.Life is unpredictable, so we should treasure every moment.
小題3:How should we spend every day according to the author?
a. being thankful and helpful
b. appreciating the natural beauty of the world
c. being confident
d. making every effort to succeed
A.a(chǎn)bB.bc C.a(chǎn)bcD.bcd

Congratulations! You have applied for a job and now you are getting ready for that important job interview and you are looking forward to making a good impression on your future (hopefully) boss.

When you walk in the room the very first impression you make on the interviewer can have a great influence on the rest of the interview. It is important that you introduce yourself, shake hands, and are friendly. In a job interview, the first question is often a “breaking the ice” type of question. Don’t be surprised if the interviewer asks you something like: “How are you today?” or “What do you think of the weather lately?” Answer the question without going into too much detail.
Talking about qualifications (資歷) is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education and any special training you may have received in the past. Your qualifications also include your experience in any previous work. It is important to explain what experience you have in detail. Generally, employers want to know exactly what you did and how well you accomplished your tasks. This is not the time to be modest.
Try to avoid some big mistakes in the job interview, such as leaving the mobile on and criticizing previous bosses. The worst thing is you yourself have no questions. Having no questions shows you are either not interested or not prepared. Remember that interviewers are more impressed with the questions you ask than the selling points you try to make.
