“I can't go any farther,”John Smith thought.“I must get a rest before I go on. They'll look for me first up there on the mountain where the plane was shot down. They're sure to find the chute (降落傘) in the end. So they' 11 know I'm not dead. They'll think I'm hiding up there in the trees and so they'll look for me there. So I'll go down to the village as soon as possible. With luck by the evening my aching foot will be good enough to get me to the border.”
Far above him on the mountain side he could hear someone whispering which frightened him a lot after the great silence. Looking up he saw some lights moving across the face of the mountain in the grey light. But there was nobody on the road for the moment, and he dragged himself along to wards the village, still almost invisible in the first light. At last he reached the church. How he wished to go in, but he knew that would not do. Instead, he struggled along its walls towards a very old building not far away from the church doors. John Smith pushed open the heavy wooden door and slipped inside!
