What do working mothers worry about the most? It's the kids of course. Whatever the setting, the question I get asked the most is "Will the kids be alright?" It has made me realize that we tend to look at the glass half-empty rather than half-filled when it comes to mixing work and family. We forget about all the benefits that we bring to our children when we work - and I'm not talking about the obvious financial benefits, although these of course shouldn't be taken for granted.

About a year ago I remember getting a call from the school just as I was pulling up to the house after having driven 20 minutes to the school and 20 minutes back. "Mrs. Brown Quinn, your son asked us to call. He forgot his sports clothes. Can you come back to the school and drop them off?" I was exasperated(惱火)! I had already spent 40 minutes in aggressive weekday morning traffic. I replied, "Sorry, I'm working at the moment. I'm afraid my son needs to learn to be organized."

Being a good parent requires delivering tough love sometimes. Kids need to learn to be independent. It can be a cruel and competitive world out there. Seeking interests, including business, outside of your kids, can give you that extra idea that you need not care for your kids with attention. This benefit of working isn't always immediately evident.

It wasn't until our daughter went away to college that she realized why we had raised her in the way that we did. "Mom, I can't believe how so many of my friends struggle to manage things on their own. They are constantly calling their parents for help." You'll love that moment! After all those years of complaining about why you don't do this or why you don't give them that, your kids realize that tough love has made them better people.

1.The purpose of the author is to ______.

A. describe her own experience in raising children

B. advise us to mix work and family

C. throw light on a special benefit of working

D. argue for working mothers

2.How can kids become better people according to the author?

A. By showing them your deep love.

B. By giving them all your attention.

C. By giving them tough love.

D. By giving them freedom to do things on their own.

3.The daughter's attitude towards the author is ______ when she grows up.

A. understanding B. caring

C. disappointed D. surprised

4.The author refused to drop off her son's sports clothes because ______.

A. she wanted her son to be organized

B. she was caught in heavy traffic

C. she thought her son was lying

D. she was busy working

My family went away on vacation. With a lot of homework to do, so I couldn’t go with them. I spend the week alone in the apartment. Every morning was real peaceful. There was no alarm clock waking I up. After breakfast, I would do many reading till lunch. In the afternoon, I would go jogging in the park or swimming or something as that. Every night I go to the movies, and I had great time. I wasn’t lonely at all because I met my friends, whom were interested in sports. Sometimes they would meet me at the gymnasium, or then we would go swimming in the pool there. I didn’t really miss my family except that I had to do all the cooking.

If you want to cook something quickly, you heat it from both sides. That’s what’s happening to the West Antarctic ice sheet(南極洲西部冰蓋). A new study reveals that the area under the ice sheet is far hotter than previously thought, fed by an unexpected flow of geothermal energy(地?zé)崮?. While the CO2 we send out heats the atmosphere above the continent, earth is melting us ice from below.

If you were to drill (鉆) deep at some place on the continents, you would find that the temperature increases about 25℃ for every kilometer deep into the hole on average. Scientists call this the geothermal gradient(地?zé)崽荻?. Until recently, no one had drilled deeply enough through the West Antarctic ice to determine the geothermal gradient underground. For the new study, researchers drilled all the way through the ice and into the mud. They found that the geothermal gradient was about 200℃, which is several times the global average on continents. Few predicted this result, although it had been showed that the earth below the West Antarctic ice is unusually hot.

Even with the new discovery, though, we still don’t know exactly where the heat is coming from. One interesting possibility is volcanoes, which are under the ice. As recently as 2013, scientists were still discovering volcanoes under the ice in the area, and there may be many more.

Some people say that these volcanoes, rather than manmade climate change, are responsible for melting the area’s ice. While it’s true that heat coming from within the earth, including heat related to volcanoes, makes the melting faster, it is just one contributor to the loss of the West Antarctic ice sheet---not the main cause. Today’s study could help us understand how the whole system, including global warming, is melting the ice.

1.What’s happening to the West Antarctic ice sheet?

A. The ice sheet is getting hotter and hotter.

B. It is heated from below rather than from above.

C. The ice sheet is producing a new kind of energy.

D. It is melting from both sides.

2.What can be learned from the second Paragraph?

A. It was the first time that researchers had tried to measure geothermal gradients.

B. The geothermal gradient showed where the heat came from.

C. The result was beyond the researchers’ expectations.

D. Researchers never knew the earth under the West Antarctic ice was hot.

3.The author would probably agree that ___.

A. the new discovery is unhelpful without a certain conclusion

B. no volcano has been found to support the researchers’ idea

C. volcanoes are the most important reason for the melting of the ice

D. global warming is surely one reason for the melting of the ice

4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. The West Antarctic ice sheet is in danger.

B. Researchers are trying to stop global warming.

C. The West Antarctic ice sheet’s melting will bring terrible consequences.

D. It has been known how to stop the melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年內(nèi)蒙古包頭第九中學(xué)高二上期中英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Photographs are everywhere. They decorate (裝飾) the walls of homes and are used in stores for sales of different goods. The news is filled with pictures of fires, floods, and special events. Photos record the beauties of nature. They can also bring things close that are far away. Through photos, people can see wild animals, cities in foreign lands, and even the stars in outer space. Photos also tell stories.

Reporting the news through photos is called photojournalism. At times photojournalists tell their stories through a single picture. At other times, they use a group of pictures to tell a story. Each picture is like a chapter in a book, which can do more than record the facts. It can also be a strong force for social change.

Jacob Riis was among the first photojournalists. He took pictures of parts of New York City where the poor lived. Riis believed that poverty(貧窮) caused crime, and he used photos to help him prove his point. A few years later, the photos of small children working in factories by Lewis Hine shocked the public. Hine’s pictures helped bring about laws to protect such children.

Hundreds of pictures may have to be taken in order to get one or two really good photos. It takes science to have the photo come out clearly and art to make a photo that has a good design and expresses feeling. Photojournalists make an actual record of what they see. A photo, however, can be both a work of art and an actual record. It can record an important event as a beautiful or exciting picture.

As historical and artistic documents(文獻(xiàn)) , photos can become more important over time. Today photojournalists still have their pictures appear in newspapers and magazines. They also publish(發(fā)表) them in books and on the Internet.

1. The underlined word “They” in the first paragraph refers to .

A. beauties B. photos C. goods D. events

2. The photos of the small children by Hine show us that photos .

A. are also works of art

B. are popular ways of reporting news

C. often shock the public

D. can serve as a force for social change

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. News with pictures is encouraging.

B. Photos help people improve.

C. News photos mean history in a sense.

D. People prefer reading news with pictures.

4. The text is mainly about .

A. telling the story through pictures

B. decorating the walls of homes

Due to the increasing number of violence acts produced in schools all over the world, more and more parents prefer to have their children educated at home rather than at school. This way they can assure their safety and well-being, although teachers and school representatives are trying to improve the situation in schools by increasing the number of the persons in charge with the safety of the students.

The main reason for violence acts are the films and cartoons that fill the children’s time. They want to do everything. They watch on TV and never think at the consequences, and they may hurt a classmate or a teacher.

On the other hand, parents are not fully satisfied with the children’s results obtained in classes and they consider private classes would have better results.

When a teacher has to watch 30 students in class he can’t probably see what each of them is doing, how he is writing, or if he understands the explanations. At home the teacher can explain in details everything the child doesn’t understand as many times as he considers proper.

And many times. the child grows fond of the teacher at home, who becomes his best friend, and who helps him whenever he needs someone to talk to.

However, the best solution would be a mixture between the education received at school and that at home, because school makes children communicate and socialize. Keeping a child at home for fear there might happen something bad to him only makes the child’s character weak and prevents him from knowing what real life is. Staying in a crystal ball only does harm to the child.

All in all, schools have been created to help children, not to harm them, so it’s best to keep children in these special places, where they learn, laugh, have fun and make new friends.

1.The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.

A. teach parents the ways to keep theft children safe

B. show solutions to developing children’s character

C. explain the main reason for violence acts in schools

D. analyze an education problem and give opinions

2. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. Advantages and Disadvantages of Private Classes

B. Who is to Blame. Parents or Schools?

C. Which is Better, School Study or Home Study

D. The Relationship between Teachers and Children

A. More and more violence acts occur in schools

B. Parents want to improve their children's grades

C. Parents are concerned about their children’s safety

D. The education system is far from satisfactory

4.What does“a crystal ball”in the passage refer to?
