Robotic Puppy
Roll over, sit and fetch aren’t commands normally given to a robot, but the smart toy company WowWee has developed a new way of owning a puppy.
CHIP (Canine Home Intelligent Pet) is a robotic dog with blue LED eyes and pointy ears and can sit, shake, dance and make all types of dog noises. It also has tracking capabilities to help locate its owner.“The beauty about CHIP is that it has its own thing going on,” said Sufer,CTO at WowWee.“It has its own life and own kind of intelligence.Even if you’re not around,it’s always doing something.”
CHIP uses wheels to get around and is loaded with sensors(傳感器) that give it a 360-degree view to find its ball. The pup is Bluetooth enabled, which connects to a wristband worn by its owner. The wristband, similar to a watch, displays icons(圖標)for different commands such as a thumb-up,which allows you to give your pup a digital belly ruB. With its owner wearing a smart wristband,it can even follow him around the room.
“We worked on CHIP for about five to six months,” Davin Sufer, told dailymail.com,“We typically come up with a concept, model and product and get it on shelves within a year.” The company plans to start shipping units by next fall, which will allow them to load up the robotic dog with sensors and add many more animated responses per-owner interactivity.
The high-tech toy company made its debut(處女作)in 2004 by releasing the 1.5 foot RoboSapien, which sold millions of units.MiP,which hit shelves last year,is a seven inch tall robot covered in white with black accents.Users can direct it,change its emotions and make it dance to any song on your iPad. It’s loud, fast and active.
About 15 years ago,a company called ToyQuest developed the first ever electronic robotic dog---Tekno,the Robotic Puppy. The company sold over seven million units in the first season and 40 million more during its original four years of production.Tekno was built with over 160 emotions and instructions, but most importantly offered consumers a quick look into the future.

Last month,my younger sister Michelle, four of my friends and I held our first charity art exhibitions. The exhibitions, containing 140 paintings, raised 44,000 yuan, all donated to Stepping Stones,a charity that supports poor children in China.
Ever since l was a little girl, I have been in love with art.I have always been fascinated with the idea of creating beauty and emotion-how imagination can transform a simple piece of paper into something beyond the possibilities of the real world.I watched others create magic by simply moving their hands, and felt thrilled as I gradually learned to do this myself.
Passion results in creation. In nine years,I had accumulated more pieces than I could count. My finished paintings were set aside, gathering dust as time passed. So I decided to hold exhibitions to find a home and some appreciation for my artwork.
Nonetheless,I was extremely nervous. After all,I am only a l5-year-old child who has a passion, but not necessarily one who creates artwork that others want to buy.
However, the turnout was more than I could ever have imagined, and the amount of money we raised quadrupled(四倍于)our original target. We were very lucky to find a charity,Stepping Stone, that would show us exactly how our money would be used:to teach English to poor children in the country.I was even offered an opportunity to teach the children myself.
Through this experience,I not only gained more confidence in my art,but also discovered its impact.I realized a paintbrush could paint not only a canvas, but also new opportunities for others who don’t have as many choices in who they want to be,or what they want to do.Although this cannot transform the world, this may transform the world for one child,or even more.

A.Moving hands. B.Painting.
C.Changing the world. D.Using imagination.
2.By saying “Passion results in creation”, the author means she

3.What can you know according to the last two paragraphs?
A.Stepping Stone is an educational organization.
B.Art changed the life of the author and others in a way.
C.Her original donation was expected about 44,000 yuan.
D.The author realized she had an advantage over others.

On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.
Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.
Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple (楓樹) makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees.
The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.
The seasons change just outside the door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars’ (楊樹) putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.
1.What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. The scenes are colorful and changeable.
B. There are many windows in the wooden house.
C. The views remind us that we are in a wooden house.
D. The lakes outside the windows are quite different in color.
2.By mentioning the names of the trees, the author aims to show that ___________ .
A. the kids like playing in trees
B. the kids are very familiar with trees
C. the kids have learned much knowledge
D. the kids find trees useful learning tools
3.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. The change of seasons is easily felt.
B. The seasons make the scenes change.
C. The weather often changes in the forest.
D. The door is a good position to enjoy changing seasons.
4. What is the main purpose of the author writing the text?
A. To describe the beauty of the scene around the house.
B. To introduce her children’s happy life in the forest.
C. To show that living in the forest is healthful.
D. To share the joy of living in the nature.

My father and I started our morning by moving quickly into the local store. I waited in the line a the Starbucks counter while he shopped around to pick up a few things.
As I was starting there I become aware of an elderly women, with untidy hair, wearing layers upon layers of old clothing, hunchbacked(彎背的) behind me in line. She had a few things for washing and seemed to want the Starbucks cashier to ring up since that queue was shorter than the queues in the store.
At some point I became aware of her edging (慢慢挪動) closer behind me — closer than I was comfortable with! I instinctively (本能地) placed a hand over my purse and drew it close to me. My fear and imagination raced creating wild stories about this homeless woman who might try to steal from me.
Then it was my turn to order. As the cashier rang Ypsilanti my total, I discovered I was 67 cents short. I called my father but he was hard of hearing. He asked me to repeat what I said but he still couldn’t make me out. At that point, a long, grey arm, with holes in its sleeves, reached over from behind me. She laid 67 cents out on the counter, saying, "Here, we all need some help sometimes. "
I was stunned! Here was a woman who clearly had very little to give and was i n great need herself. I had judged her wrongly and she had offered to reach out to help me!
