Students being interviewed either by alumni representatives or an admissions office need to walk a very fine line between being prepared and being rehearsed.

Here are some basic interview suggestions for you:

Don't arrive late. Don't arrive too early either. 1.

3. . Make sure you do your homework on specific majors, programs and their study abroad opportunities.

Don't be boring. Make yourself stand out with what you choose to talk about, such as your summer experiences, your volunteer and community service involvement, your club activities and internships or work experience. 4.

Don't sound like you've rehearsed. 5.

Don't forget to come prepared with your own questions. These questions are often where a student has the best opportunity to set themselves apart from other applicants. Create a list of questions you can ask that will help you decide if this could be the right college for you.

A. Being robotic and sounding like you've been preparing for three months will only work against you.

B. You won't have anything to do except getting more, nervous.

C. Not being well-informed about the college comes across as being disrespectful.

D. but you have to pretend you're going out for a nice dinner

E. Your questions should demonstrate critical thinking.

F. Don't assume you already know enough about the college

G. Share your interests and passions and let the interviewer feel like they know who you are when it's over.

When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.

One cost-cutting proposal(advice) is to allow college students to get a bachelor’ s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate(本科生)education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three-year degree” model.

I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum(課程) any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits(學分). In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist(oppose) “diluting(稀釋)” the quality of the education they offer.

In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior(更勝一籌) to a quality three-year education. A college education requires enough time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’ s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(實習生)in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.

1.We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. most American universities are against the “three-year degree” model

B. many famous US universities are considering adopting the “three-year degree” model

C. professors are willing to accept the “three-year degree” model

D. the “three-year degree” model can make college learning more efficient

2.In most US universities,________.

A. college students are offered the co-op program

B. electives’ credits make up one quarter of the required credits

C. all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation

D. some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

3.We can infer that________.

A. the author is a college professor

B. the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to afford

C. the author considers the university education quality very important

D. the author pays special attention to the all-round development of college students

4.The first paragraph serves as a(n)________.

A. explanation B. definition

C. introduction D. comment

Wild weather, unexpected coral reefs and dangerous sea creatures… these are the nightmares (噩夢) you can imagine a teenager on a solo voyage (獨自旅行) around the world might suffer from. But for Laura Dekker, sailing around the globe seems less a price to be paid than a prize to be treasured.

As the 19-year-old Dutch sailor said in Maidentrip, a documentary(紀錄影片) released last year about her experience of becoming the youngest person to sail around the world alone in 2012, “I was born on a boat. I lived my first five years at sea. And ever since, all I have wanted is to return to that life.”

With her yacht(游艇) Guppy, Dekker began her journey at 14 and sailed 50,004 kilometers in 519 days.

The flying fish keeping her company, the dolphins following in her wake and the warm days spent on deck playing the flute (長笛) as she watched another unforgettable sunset were enough to make others jealous.

But these didn’t always go well. There were terrible moments in which Dekker feared death. On one occasion, a whale almost turned Guppy over. Another time, she battled extreme winds and Guppy surfed down 8-meter-high waves.

Out on the open sea alone, she also got used to living without a fridge, a flushing(用水沖洗) toilet, and a hot shower.

“As a human being you don’t need much,” she told Stuff.co.nz. “ They might make life more comfortable, but you really don’t need them to be happy.”

In fact, her outlook on life was shaped by the trip. “I wanted the storms. I wanted the calms. I wanted to feel loneliness,” she told The New York Times. “And now I know all these things. It’s the end of the dream I had as a child, and it’s the beginning of my life as a sailor.”

1.According to the text, in which year did Dekker begin her journey of 50,004 kilometers at sea?

A. In 2012 B. In 2010 C. In 2009 D. In 2011

2. The method the author uses to develop Paragraph 5 is ________.

A. offering analyses B. providing explanations

C. giving examples D. making comparisons

3.Which of the following can best describe the girl Laura Dekker? _________.

A. Modest and optimistic

B. Patient and hospitable

C. Brave and generous

D. Brave and determined

4. How did Laura Dekker think of her life on the sea?

A. It was so dangerous and almost ruined her.

B. It brought her great happiness and much comfort.

C. It is the sailing on the sea that made her well known.

D. Full of danger and challenge, it made her experience happiness and better understand life as well.

Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families.Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.

Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them.Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they many become aggressive or insecure.

Parents are also concerned at,out the commercials that their children see on television.
