I spent two months with an American family last year when I studied in America. It is said that “The best house is in the U.S.A., the best wife is in Japan and the best food is in China.”So I took 36    and pleasure to   37    “the best food” for my American family. Each day, regardless of my poor skill of cooking,I performed my play in  38   way:changing the dishes’colour, the meat’s type or the soup’s style. Thus,my American friends could discover the    39   of eating Chinese food. Because of my“      40    ” job,I was often rewarded by their    41  of  appreciation , such as “very  tasty”,“excellent”etc. But the joke was here: yesterday, I cooked Sichuan-style    42  for dinner.I was   43   at my achievement. When all the family members arrived at the table, they first looked     44  at the fish, then looked at me. “Why do all the fish have their    45   ?” they asked,“It’s horrible!” Horrible or beautiful? I don’t know. But I    46  know that fish heads are delicious. The    47   is the best part of fish; in    48    only the respectable guest can have the special     49  of enjoying it. Another                      50     thing is:the American friends often said to me“    51 ”as they  52   fruits or other things. According to Chinese tradition,I would simply smile in answer to their kindness 53 actually helping myself to any of the food.     54  ,I said “help yourself” to them whenever I brought home fruits.Dear me,no matter how much or how often I brought home food, as long as it was nice to their taste, they    55  hesitated to use their hands to “help themselves” until all was finished.

Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.
Their study found that theobromine(可可堿), found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.
The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes.
Ten healthy volunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicines are stopping coughs.
The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin needed to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they needed only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo.
The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a nerve activity(神經(jīng)活動), which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.
小題1:According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______.
A.cannot be as effective as codeine

My friend Karen and I were always together. Karen was only a few months older than I. I always thought she was so beautiful, with long hair and blue eyes. I loved Karen so much because she liked me for being the way I was. I could be myself and share my secrets with her and I never felt like I was being judged.
We had so much fun and were really quite silly. One time I asked my mom to make us the same dresses so we could pretend we were twins.
We continued as best friends throughout grade school. One day, Karen was going to another friend’s place and asked me to come along, but I couldn’t go because I had a babysitting job that afternoon. We walked together to the Becker’s home where I was to babysit and then she continued on her way without me. We had agreed that I would meet her at the corner when she returned and I finished my job.
At four o’clock I rushed to the corner so I wouldn’t be late for meeting Karen. Just as I arrived at the corner, I saw Karen crossing the street. In a second it happened. I saw Karen’s body fly up in the sky. A car had hit her!
Karen was on life support for a week before it was decided that they would allow her to go in peace. Karen’s parents wanted to donate her organs(器官)to the hospital, but there was nothing left healthy enough to be used because she was hit so hard.
I have never got so close to another person since Karen died. I do miss her! Do you cherish(珍惜)your friends? If you don’t, please do, as you may lose them one day.

When I first got an email account ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisement and other correspondence that do not interest the at all. If we want e-mail to continue to be useful, we need special laws that make spamming(發(fā)送垃圾郵件) a crime.
If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to spend hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products, individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?
This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam emails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company. Companies rely on e-mail on for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are, in the end, passed on to the consumer.
For these reasons, I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam. Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

Is it true that cats have nine lives? One 4-year-old American cat named Sugar definitely seems to have more than one. Sugar fell from the 19th floor of her owner’s home in Boston last month and was only hurt a little on her chest.
“This story isn’t much of a surprise,” said Jake Socha, a scientist at Virginia Tech University, US, in an interview with the BBC. “There have been lots of records of these cats surviving.”
Back in 1987, scientists studied 132 cats. All of them had been brought to a vet’s clinic in New York after falling from tall buildings. Around 90 percent of these cats were alive after their fall and only 37 percent had been seriously injured.
“Being able to survive falls is a critical thing for animals that live in trees, and cats are one of them,” said Socha.
Cats have developed special body structures to survive accidental falls. Their legs are muscular. This can protect their bones from breaking, Professor Andrew Biewener from Harvard University told the BBC. Cats can also spread out their legs like a parachute to reduce their falling speed, he said.
The strange part, according to scientists, is that cats have a better chance of survival if they fall from higher than seven stories. This is because cats have a good sense of which way is down. They can twist their bodies as they fall to make sure they land on their feet. A higher fall means more time for the cat to change its body position.
However, you should not throw your cat out of the window to see how this works. Most pet cats are overweight nowadays. They are not fit enough to change their position in midair, warned Steve Dale, an American cat behavior scientist.
“This cat (Sugar) was lucky,” Dale said. In fact, most cats would suffer serious lung damage, a broken leg or a broken jaw or teeth damage, he said.
小題1:What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Cats really do have nine lives.
B.Many cats can survive falls.
C.Cats are the softest animals in the world.
D.More than half of the cats that fall from high places end up badly injured.
小題2:What does the underlined word “critical” mean in the context?
A.Important.B.Easy.C.Challenging. D.Serious.
小題3:Why can cats survive falls according to the article?
a. They have a hidden parachute in their bodies.
b. Their legs have developed in a way that protects their bones from breaking.
c. They can land on their feet.
d. They can twist their bodies to reduce the speed at which they are falling.
A.a(chǎn), bB.b, cC.c, dD.b, d
小題4:Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.A pet cat that falls out of a tall building is not really at risk.
B.Sugar was lucky that she was only injured in the leg.
C.Cats are confused as to which way is down when they are in midair.
D.A cat that falls from the fourth story of a building is more likely to die than one that falls from the 10th story.

We’ve heard about radiation from the damaged nuclear reactors in Japan reaching American shores. Experts say so far there is no reason to worry, and point out that we meet radiation every day. Where and how? NPR’s Renee Montagne posed that question to Peter Caracappa, a radiation safety officer and professor of nuclear engineering.
MONTAGNE: How many things emit radiation?
Dr CARACAPPA: Well, radiation and radioactive material is a part of nature. So everything that’s living has some amount of radiation coming from it—a very small amout. Plus there’s radiation in the ground and the air.
So the extremes are uranium in the soil to bananas?
Yes.
By the way, why do bananas have radiation?
Bananas have a lot of potassium(鉀). And a small amount of potassium naturally is called potassium 40, which is radioactive
What’s the difference between radiation that’s harmful and not harmful?
Well, the term radiation can apply to a lot of different things. But the harmful radiation is ionizing(離子)radiation. It has enough energy that it can make chemical changes in material. We could get ionizing radiation from an X-ray, for example. It’s the kind of radiation that causes cancer.
The broader definition of radiation includes a lot of things that we call non-ionizing radiation. That includes everything like radio waves and visible light and your microwave.
So what then is the largest contributor of ionizing radiation?
For the natural sources of ionizing radiation, actually the biggest chunk of that tends to come from radon(氡), which is a radioactive material that is present in the air. It can become a concern when it builds up in low-lying areas of homes like basements.
Would it be fair to say that most people do not need to worry about the danger of being exposed to radiation?
I would say that the everyday exposure to radioation that we meet contributes an extremely tiny risk to our life or to our health compared to all of the other risks that we meet in our day-to-day life.
小題1:We can infer from the first paragraph that radiation is______.
A.rareB.powerfulC.dangerousD.common
小題2:The passage may be _______.
A.a(chǎn)n interviewB.a(chǎn)n argumentC.a(chǎn) talk show programD.a(chǎn) science report
小題3:Whether radiation is harmful or not depends on______.
A.whether it has a small amount of potassium
B.whether it changes chemical in materials.
C.whether it has energy to change materials
D.whether it is visible in life
小題4:The purpose of writing this passage is to _______.
A.a(chǎn)dvise on how to protect us from radiation
B.a(chǎn)nalyze what causes radiation in daily life
C.warn people of the danger of radiation
D.expect people not to fear everyday radiation

Brrriiinnng. The alarm clock announces the start of another busy weekday in the morning. You jump out of bed, rush into the shower, into your clothes and out the door with hardly a moment to think.A stressful journey to work gets your blood pressure climbing.Once at the office, you glance through the newspaper with depressing stories or reports of disasters. In that sort of mood, who can get down to work, particularly some creative, original problem-solving work?
The way most of us spend our mornings is exactly opposite to the conditions that promote flexible, open-minded thinking.Imaginative ideas are most likely to come to us when we’re unfocused. If you are one of those energetic morning people, your most inventive time comes in the early evening when you are relaxed.Sleepy people’s lack of focus leads to an increase in creative problem solving.By not giving yourself time to tune into your wandering mind, you’re missing out on the surprising solutions it may offer.
The trip you take to work doesn’t help, either. The stress slows down the speed with which signals travel between neurons (神經(jīng)細胞), making inspirations less likely to occur. And while we all should read a lot about what’s going on in the world, it would not make you feel good for sure, so put that news website or newspaper aside until after the day’s work is done.
So what would our mornings look like if we wanted to start them with a full capacity for creative problem solving? We’d set the alarm a few minutes early and lie awake in bed, following our thoughts where they lead. We’d stand a little longer under the warm water of the shower, stopping thinking about tasks in favor of a few more minutes of relaxation. We’d take some deep breaths on our way to work, instead of complaining about heavy traffic. And once in the office—after we get a cup of coffee—we’d click on links not to the news of the day but to the funniest videos the web has to offer.
小題1:What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To tell us a specific story.
B.To introduce the topic of the passage.
C.To indicate how busy one usually is in the morning.
D.To show mornings are not suitable for creative work.
小題2:What does the author imply about newspapers?
A.They are normally full of bad news.
B.They are solution providers.
C.They are a source of inspiration.
D.They are more educational than websites.
小題3:By “tune into your wandering mind” (in Para.2), the author means “_______”.
A.wander into the wildB.listen to a beautiful tune
C.stop concentrating on anything D.switch to the traffic channel
小題4:The author writes the last paragraph in order to _______.
A.establish a routine for the futureB.summarize past experiences
C.a(chǎn)dvocate diverse ways of life D.offer practical suggestions

Televisions, stereos, telephones, and computers have changed the way we spend our time and what we know about the world. Some of the changes brought about by these material possessions have improved our way of life, but others have made it worse. Our young teenagers turn on the television, play the stereo, play games on the computer, talk on the telephone, and eat all the same time. This drives me right up the wall to instant insanity(精神失常).
However, teens of today place too great an importance on material property. They spend an average of several hours a day watching television, listening to stereos, playing on the computer, playing video games, and talking on the telephone. Families no longer watch television together and there is great lack of communication. Materialism is evident when an otherwise intelligent teenager drives their parents crazy, and into debt, when misusing communication equipment. Teens judge and admire other teens for what they own and have, rather than for what they are or what they can do. They no longer care about values, like honesty, integrity(正直), freedom, talent, quality and other values and morals.
However, good or bad, communication devices are here to stay. It is up to us, as parents, to stop our beloved teenagers from misusing and abusing our communication equipment and devices. We need to avoid the problems they present and to make the most of their opportunities they possess and hold for us all.
小題1:The writer’s attitude toward the modern material possessions is generally _____.
A.positiveB.negativeC.neutralD.indifferent
小題2:According to the writer, teens’ overuse of communication equipment can do harm to _____.
A.their own healthB.their own study
C.their own moralityD.their neighbors’ life
小題3:The writer attributes (歸咎) the unsatisfactory behavior of teens to _____.
A.teens’ too much free timeB.parents’ non-interference
C.inadequate school educationD.material property
小題4:It can be inferred from the passage that the writer seems to be most annoyed at ______.
A.a(chǎn)ll the modern material possessionB.eating while talking on the phone
C.the decline in teens’ moralityD.a(chǎn)ll the communication equipment
