Sabriye Tenberken traveled to Tibet (西藏) alone and opened the first school for the blind there.
At the age of 12 ,Tenberken be came blind while living in Cologne,Germany. She studied at the Central Asian Sciences at Bonn University. Besides Mongolian and modem Chinese,she also learned modem and classical Tibetan.
She opened the Center for the blind in Lhasa in 1999 that stands to this day. There were no schools for the blind in Tibet before this center opened.
