"Uncle Sam," is usually used to refer to the United States or the US government. It is the nickname of the country. It is hard to believe that this nickname became known quite by accident and there was a man  75   "Uncle Sam."However, not many people have ever heard of such a man.Not even most young Americans.
The man was called Uncle Sam Wilson. He was born in Arlington,Massachusetts, September 13, 1776. At the age of 14 Sam joined the American Revolutionary War(美國革命), and   76    in the army under George Washington until the end of the war.He then moved to Troy, New York states, and began a meatpacking business. He earned a reputation(贏得了聲譽(yù))for being honest and hardworking. He was locally respected and admired, thus greeted as Uncle Sam.
One day in 1812,a group of visitors came to Sam's meatpacking plant(肉類加工廠).Among them was Government official. He  77    the capitalized letters(大寫字母) EAUS on the packages of meat and asked what they stood for. A worker man replied that EA stood for Elbert Anderson, the businessman for whom Sam was working. And he added   78  that US(actually it was the short form for United States) stood for Uncle Sam Wilson. Soon soldiers were saying all army supplies were from  "Uncle Sam".
In May 1813,this story appeared in a newspaper published in New York.Since Uncle Sam was an example of a hard-working man and a lover of America, the idea of"Uncle Sam" as the name of this kind of man became well-known rapidly.Uncle Sam was ready to help  79   and place the interest of the nation(國家利益)above all---this is in line with (與……符合)the American spirit. This makes the  American consider Uncle Sam   80  the symbol of the USA.In 1961 the US Congress made a decision that "Uncle Sam" is the America's national symbol.

Question: First trip to the USA
For my new job, I will travel to the United States next month and meet my American boss. This will be my first trip there. I’m worried about correct business behavior and manners. My boss invited me to his home for dinner. Do you have any advice?

Re: First trip to the USA
It’s a good idea to bring a small gift or something from your country. Don’t be surprised if your boss opens the gift right away. In the USA, people often open a gift when they receive it. In Korea, that is not polite, but it’s common in the USA.

Americans use their hands to eat some kinds of food, such as pizza and fried chicken. Watch your American hosts, and do what they do.

Re: First trip to the USA
In Korea and Japan, it’s the custom to remove your shoes before entering a house. In the United States, you usually don’t take your shoes off. Once I was travelling in Japan and entered a house with my shoes on by mistake. Oops!

Re: First trip to the USA
Many Americans are very informal(非正式的)at home. One time I went to an American business partner’s home for dinner, I was surprised that everyone stood and talked in the kitchen while the husband and wife were cooking dinner. Besides, unlike in Korea, everyone took part in the dinner table conversation, even the man’s wife and children.

Re: First trip to the USA
I agree with Lee. You probably won’t speak about business during dinner, so my advice is to know some   topics of conversation. For example, you can talk about travel, food, music, or sports. But you’d better not question about age.
