Great Britain consists of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. On the 13th century Wales was linked to England. In 1603, they were joined to Scotland. They were united in peace instead of by war. Furthermore, just as they were going to get Ireland connecting to form United Kingdom, the southern part of Ireland was broke away, so only Northern Ireland joined with England.

England is the larger of the four countries and for convenience it was divided into three zone: the South of England, the Midlands and the North. Most of the population are settled in the South, and most of the industrial cities is located in the Midlands and the North.

London is the capital city with the great historical treasures, that has the oldest port built by the Romans in the 1st century AD, the oldest building begun by the Anglo Saxons in the 1060s and oldest castle constructed by later Norman rulers in 1066.

How to Survive Embarrassing Moments

Have you ever done something embarrassing? At that moment, you probably wished you could disappear into thin air. Unfortunately, embarrassing things happen to everyone at one time or another. The good news? You can keep the damage to the minimum. Here's some help.

Laugh it off

You're staring at your crush (意中人) so hard that you walk into a wall. You trip over your own feet and drop all your books. The best thing you can do? As long as you're not seriously hurt, laugh it off.Say like "Hey, I can teach you to do that if you want to!" or "It took me years to learn that!" By laughing at yourself, you show people you're confident and still in control of the situation. That's bound to make a stronger impression than the fact that you dropped a stack of books.

Move on

Some situations are too personal to laugh off.Your underwear falls out of your backpack. Your bathing suit falls off in the pool. You pass gas while giving a presentation.Making a joke would just call more attention to what happened — and that's the last thing you want. What now? You can just pretend nothing happened and go back to what you were doing, or you can acknowledge it with a "Oh, that was awkward" and then move on.

If there's a joker who thinks it's a good idea to point out how badly you just embarrassed yourself, fix him with a glare and then go back to whatever you were doing.Tell yourself he's a little bug on the ground, not even worth thinking about.Remind yourself that it's over, done.Move on.

Apologize and move on

Some embarrassing situations pack a double punch. Not only do you embarrass yourself, but you make someone else feel bad.You say to a friend that another friend is such a copycat, and then realize the copycat is standing right behind you.You imitate your teacher's unusual accent just as the teacher walks in.Now you're embarrassed and they're mad or hurt.

Making a joke now would make the situation even worse, so don't go there.Although you might feel like running away or even crying, neither of those responses will make you look better.Instead, apologize, "I'm so sorry. That was really mean of me."

If you've been disrespectful to a teacher or a parent, accept whatever consequences without complaint. If you've hurt a friend, do your best to make it up to them.Once you've done all you can to make things right again, move on.If someone else brings it up, just say, "I feel bad enough about that —can we just let it go, please?"

The next time you're stuck in an embarrassing moment, remind yourself that you're a strong person and you can get through this.Stay calm and act confident and the moment will pass.

Sharks have lived in the world’s oceans for millions of years. A shark has a very good sense of smell. It can find small amounts of substances in water, such as blood, body liquids and chemicals produced by animals. These powerful senses help sharks find their food. 1.

Sharks grow slowly. About forty percent of all sharks lay eggs. 2. Some sharks carry their young inside their bodies as humans do. Some sharks are not able to reproduce until they are twenty years old. Most reproduce only every two years. And they give birth to fewer than ten young sharks. For this reason, over-fishing of sharks is of special danger to the future of the animal.

3. They eat injured and diseased fish. Their hunting activities mean that the numbers of other fish in ocean waters do not become too great. This protects the plants and other forms of life that exist in the oceans.

People hunt sharks for sport, food, medicine and their skin. Experts say the international market for some kinds of sharks has increased because many parts of a shark are valuable. 4. Shark liver oil is a popular source of Vitamin. The skin of a shark can be used like leather. In Asia, people enjoy a kind of soup made from shark fins. Experts say a fisherman can earn a lot of money for even one kilogram of shark fins.

Sharks are among the oldest animals on Earth. 5. If too many sharks in one area are killed, the group of sharks may never return to normal population levels.

A. The others give birth to their young.

B. Sharks are important for the world’s oceans.

C. This is a threat to other forms of life in the ocean.

D. Collectors pay thousands of dollars for the jaws of a shark.

E. Sharks are valuable to us and we can make full use of them.

F. But some sharks are in danger of disappearing from Earth.

G. Sharks eat fish, other sharks, and plants that live in the ocean.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來源:2016屆甘肅嘉峪關(guān)第一中學(xué)高三上第一次模擬考試英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

The island of Port Cros is in the south of France. I first visited it about ten years ago with my wife. I had read that it was a magical place and it seemed fascinating (迷人的), but I couldn’t believe that it was true. In fact, it was much more magical than the tourist brochures (指南) had said.

The island is mountainous and covered in trees. The water around the island is transparent like glass. When I first visited it, there was mist rising from the trees. The little harbor looked mysterious and remote: tall palm trees, a few shops and restaurants, no cars, motorcycles or bikes.

It is not by chance that the island has kept its natural beauty. Once, it was privately owned and the owners always wanted to keep it in its natural state. In 1963, Port Cros became a national park. The park directors made some rules to protect the island. They didn’t allow any new building projects. There is only one hotel and no camping is allowed. Visitors can’t use mountain bikes or smoke on the island. Sailing boats that visit the island mustn’t damage the bottom of the sea or pollute the water around it.

When we arrived, we started walking to the beach of Port-Man, which was the furthest beach from the port. It took us two hours and when we arrived, the beach was deserted. It seemed that we were the only people on the island. Time seemed to stop. It was so beautiful that we stayed there all day. I visited there again last summer. Nothing had changed. The island still looked magical and mysterious, still with few tourists. It must be wonderful to stay the night on the island, I thought. After all the visitors have gone, the island must be so quiet—a real paradise (天堂)!

1.The author got to know Port Cros at first due to _____.

A. some tourist brochures

B. his wife’s introduction

C. his first visit there

D. some TV programs

2.How has the natural beauty of the island been kept according to the text?

A. Foreign visitors are not allowed to visit it.

B. Nothing has been built in the park there.

C. Only bikes can be used on the island.

D. Sailing boats mustn’t pollute the water.

3.When the author first visited Port Cros, _____.

A. it was very sunny

B. there were few visitors there

C. it took them a whole day to walk to Port-Man

D. the island was deserted and he stayed there for a whole night
