One of those big social networking sites, Facebook, has attracted over 58 million members. Commentator Melody Cramer is no longer one of them. Here is what she shares with us about her story.

I deleted all 1,281 of my co?workers, second?grade classmates and people who I don’t know at all. I shut down my account, completely. I’m 30, and I’ve been on Facebook since March of 2004, which makes me one of the website’s earliest users.

At first, I used it obsessively. If I had a free moment, I’d log on to see whether my friends had updated their profiles. I’d sit alone scrolling through these updates and then run into someone at a coffee shop and have nothing to say because I already knew everything about them, and they knew everything about me.

In November, I went to my ten?year high school reunion and was not pleasantly surprised. Lauren became a model, Josh went to law school, Dina was a teacher. I hadn’t talked to any of them since graduation, but I knew exactly what they were doing, both now and last week. But lately, I’m overwhelmed(應接不暇). Facebook opened up to everyone, not just college students, and my co?workers started to join, which meant they now knew what I was doing when I wasn’t at work.

And as a rule: you can NOT make friends with your coworkers because then they’ll ask you the next day. But I thought we were friends. And you are friends but not the kind of friends who tell each other what they do outside of work. So now the people you work with can see what you did last night, and you’re constantly worrying what people might say about what you did last night instead of actually doing anything tonight. So Iquit. I became a 30?year?old Luddite, a person who is strongly against technology development. I’ve retuned to how the world worked when I was 20, before I knew when my friends and co?workers were counting down the seconds to vacation or entering a complicated relationship. I’m hoping life will be a lot simpler now. Peoplewill be more mysterious now that I actually have to talk to them to find out their favorite books or hobbies orneurosis(神經(jīng)癥). I don’t know when my college roommate goes to the supermarket, and I think I’m a better person for not knowing. In fact, you could say getting off a social network was the best thing I’ve done thisweek.

1.Melody Cramer decided to quit Facebook mainly because ______.

A. she thought it wasted too much time

B. she was afraid of the strangers on her account

C. she was tired of exposing her life to co?workers

D. she thought it made real?world life less interesting

2.We can learn from the passage that Melody Cramer ______.

A. had a 10?year membership of Facebook

B. used to be very objected to Facebook

C. was unpleasant to attend high school reunion

D. was one of the co-founders of Facebook

3.Which of the following about Melody Cramer is TRUE?

A. She owes her communication skills to Facebook.

B. She wishes she could be several years younger.

C. She prefers to face her friends and co-worders in reality.

D. She is no longer curious about anything around her.

4.The best title for this passage can be _____.

A. Addiction to Facebook

B. Farewell to Facebook

C. Friends Online

D. A Simpler Life

The United States Capitol Dome(圓頂) in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. Government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles and heavy cloth as part of a repair project.

The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports that the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage.

The dome was completed around 1863. U. S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast(石膏) iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off extra layers of paint.”

Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was impressive, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”

Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries...and you know ,there just needs to be preventive maintenance(維護). I am not upset with that at all.”

The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for a new president in January 2017.

1.We can learn from the passage that the United States Capitol Dome is _______.

A. widely recognized as a symbol of the U.K. government.

D. well maintained and in excellent condition

2. Which of the following is NOT included in the current construction?

A. To replace the cast iron frame.

B. To stop the leaks(滲漏).

C. To remove the old paint.

D. To fill up the narrow breaks.

3.What do we learn about the recent visitors to the Capitol ?

A. They could get a clear look at the dome.

B. They were all disappointed at the sight of the Capitol’s building.

C. They were impressed by the white dome’s fantastic beauty.

D. They held different views on the Capitol’s current appearance.

4.The text is most probably taken from ___________.

A. a book review B. a news report

Foxes and farmers have never got on well. These small dog-like animals have long been accused (控告)of killing farm animals. They are officially considered as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.

Farmers can do call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population . Hunting consists of hunting a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox , they kill it or a hunter shoots it.

People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport ; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers , and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy.

It is estimated (估計) that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting . But over the last couple of decades the number of people against fox hunting , because they think it is cruel, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to succeed without some kind of confrontation between hunters and hunt saboteurs(阻攔者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs fight with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the search of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.

Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the hunting of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Mike Foster, is trying to get Parliament to pass a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.

1.What is special about fox hunting in Britain?

A. It involves the use of a deadly poison.

B. It is a costly event which rarely happens.

C. The hunters have set rules to follow.

D. The hunters have to go through strict training.

2.A new law may be passed by the British Parliament to ________

A. keep farmers from hunting foxes.

B. forbid hunting foxes with dogs.

C. stop hunting wild animals in the countryside

D. prevent fox hunting in large numbers

3.Which can replace the underlined word in paragraph 4?

A. reunion(聯(lián)合) B. conversation(對話)

C. conflict(沖突) D. relationship

Have you ever studied a subject or brainstormed an idea, only to find yourself with pages of information, but no clear view of how it fits together? This is where Mind Mapping can help you.

Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving. By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes.1. , as they help your mind recall and review.

Popularized by Tony Buzan, Mind Maps abandon the list format of conventional note taking. They do this in favor of a two-dimensional structure. A good Mind Map shows the 'shape' of the subject, the relative importance of individual points, and the way in which facts relate to one another.2.

1.Write the title of the subject you're exploring in the center of the page, and draw a circle around it.

2.As you come across major subdivisions or subheadings of the topic (or important facts that relate to the subject) draw lines out from this circle. Label these lines with these subdivisions or subheadings.

3.As you "burrow" into (挖掘) the subject and uncover another level of information (further subheadings, or individual facts) belonging to the subheadings, draw these as lines linked to the subheading lines.

4.3.

5.As you come across new information, link it in to the Mind Map appropriately.

4..Sub-topics and facts will branch off these, like branches and twigs from the trunk of a tree. You don't need to worry about the structure you produce, as this will evolve of its own accord.

5..If you do any form of research or note taking, try experimenting with Mind Maps. You will find them surprisingly effective!

A. To draw a Mind Map, follow these steps:

B. Mind Mapping is an extremely effective method of taking notes.

C. They help you to associate ideas and make connections that you might not otherwise make.

D. A complete Mind Map may have main topic lines radiating in all directions from the center.

E. Then, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate heading line and label them.

F. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information

G. When created using colors and images or drawings, a Mind Map can even resemble a work of art!
