When we hear of dangerous diseases, cancer and heart disease are often what first comes to mind. Recently, a virus (病毒) called Ebola has reappeared in Guinea (a country in West Africa), killing 62 people so far. It leads to viral hemorrhagic fever, which is characterized by high fever and internal bleeding etc, Ebola can kill 90% of those infected, especially in underdeveloped societies like those in Africa.
Ebola is named after the Ebola River, where it was first discovered in 1976.There are five different types of the Ebola virus, each named after where they first happened: Sudan, Ivory Coast, Restoon, Bundibugyo, and Zaire. The deadliest of the five, Zaire, was responsible for the 2012 outbreak, and is believed to be attacking Guinea.
Ebola is naturally found in fruit bats (果蝠), which pass on the virus to other animals by biting or sucking on (吮吸) their blood.Humans who are suffering from the Ebola infection might have touched the bodily fluids (液體) of the infected animals.Once infected, a human becomes a carrier of the deadly virus.
Since we live in an interconnected world, where the situation in one country can affect us all, the influences of Ebola are huge: damaging trade relations, affecting foreign visitors, and weakening entire countries.Already the Guinea virus is spreading fast with a few cases spotted in Conakry — the capital of Guinea, far away from the origin of the virus. It is feared that the disease may have already reached neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, too.
Unfortunately, there are no disease-specific treatments for Ebola.Healthcare workers only supply the infected people with water to keep them in good condition.Since there have been many cases of nurses catching the disease from patients, they are forced to wear strict protective clothes, and in some cases, not even allowed to get close to the affected. The fact that there is no cure for the Ebola virus is what makes the outbreak a challenging one to control.
1.The news of Ebola in Guinea is mentioned to ________.
A. make a brief summary
B. introduce the topic of the text
C. compare Ebola with cancer
D. show the latest study of viruses
2.What can we learn about Ebola?
A. It is a newly discovered virus.
B. It is the most dangerous virus in the world.
C. It was named after where it first happened.
D. It could cause immediate death for anyone infected.
3.What is mainly described in Paragraph 3?
A. What the Ebola virus is.
B. The influences of Ebola.
C. The treatments for Ebola.
D. How the Ebola virus spreads.
4.Which of the following does the author probably agree with?

“At least you’ll be close to home!”That phrase dominated the weeks before my move to my college.I took comfort in knowing that home was close by if I needed it

The night before the move,I spoke with a sophomore(大學(xué)二年級(jí))friend of mine who was moving back the next morning.I asked if he was sad to be leaving home and his response sparked in me an internal debate.“It was nice to be back but honestly。I’ve come to think of the college as my home.”Up until that moment, the move to college seemed like an extended version of summer camp.School wasn’t a home;it was a place for me to explore when I was away from home right?

As I packed my things,I really started thinking about the concept of home, and I couldn’t help but wonder would I ever consider college my own home? The next day, once my bags were unpacked and my parents were gone,I took a moment to look around my dorm.It was absolutely nothing like my room…no bunnies,no blue curtains and no queen—sized bed.Despite the fun I was having and things I was learning in the following Welcome Week,I couldn’t bring myself to call it home.I longed for my bunnies.I even wanted my mom’s calls.“There’s no place like home.”I murmured.

Last night,I went to visit my friends and we spent the next hour talking about that missing feeling we all shared-our families, our friends, our old lives—and soon the sadness turned to fondness. One by one our friends came in to say goodnight and the room was filled with girls, all laughing and sharing our high school experiences. It wasn’t until about l:00 a.m.that I turned to my roommate, unconsciously saying,“It’s getting late…we should probably go home soon.”I was taken aback by my own words.Somehow in the few hours,my dorm room had turned into a home.

1.How did the author react to her sophomore friend’s response at first?

A.She quite agreed with her friend.

B.She was completely certain about it.

C.She thought he was telling a lie.

D.She was surprised by his response。

2.The author mentioned the bunnies twice in the passage to suggest that .

A.college lacked a friendly atmosphere

B.she didn’t get used to her college life then

C.pet-keeping was not allowed in college dorm

D.college should prepare bunnies for new students

3.Whv was the author taken aback by her own words at the end of the passage?

A.Because she began to call her college a home.

B.Because there were so many girls gathering in the dorm.

C.Because she lost a good chance to forget homesickness.

D.Because it was rude to say that when everyone was happy.

4.What made the author begin to take college as a home?

A.Decorating her dorm like a home.

B.Her previous family lives.

C.Friends’ shared feelings.

D.Comforts from other girls.

Many Americans are turning to Japan, they think, a country of high academic(學(xué)術(shù)的) achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one survey, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents(答問卷者)listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as determination, concentration, and the ability to work as a member of a group. The huge majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.

Like in America, there is diversity(多樣性) in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential(潛力的) development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

1.We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe ________.

A. Japanese preschool education emphasizes academic instruction

B. Japanese parents are more involved in preschool education than American parents

C. Japan’s economic success is a result of its scientific achievements

D. Japan’s higher education is superior to theirs

2.In Japan’s preschool education, the focus is on ________.

A. preparing children academically

B. shaping children’s character

C. teaching children mathematics

D. developing children’s artistic interests

3.Why do some Japanese parents send their children to university-based kindergartens?

A. They can do better in their future studies.

B. They can make more group experience grow there.

C. They can be individually oriented when they grow up.

D. They can have better chances of getting a first-rate education.

4.Free play has been introduced in some Japanese kindergartens in order to ________.

A. broaden children’s knowledge

B. train children’s creativity

C. lighten children’s study load

D. enrich children’s experience
