Around twenty years ago I was going through hard times. I could not find a satisfying job. To my shame, I had to drive a school bus to make ends meet and lived in a friend’s house.
One afternoon, while driving through a quiet suburban (郊外的) neighborhood I was so sad that I kept asking myself “Why has my life become so hard?” “What’s wrong with the world?” Then I pulled over the bus to drop off a little girl and as she passed she handed me a pretty earring, saying she found it on the floor of the bus and I should keep it in case the owner came to look for it.
In the evening, the owner did come to look for her earring. When I handed it to her, she got very excited and continued saying “Thanks, you’re a real gentleman.” I told her that she should thank the little girl who had found it. She said, “Yes, and you are a good driver, too. What a lovely world it is!” Then she left with satisfaction. I was touched by her last words. I had thought something was wrong with the world just because of my poor condition. In fact, nothing was wrong with the world. I should change my attitude towards life. I should be positive about life.
At first it was hard, and then it got easier. Every day I could find things to make me happy. Then one night there was a phone call for me at my friend’s house from a lady who was a manager in a large hospital. Walking for the Heart Disease

Walking is one of the most important steps for the recovery of heart disease. Time and speed are two vital aspects of walking for people with heart disease. One must walk for at least thirty five minutes per day.    1.     The following understanding will help them to walk.

Why walking?

Walking is a must for a heart patient.    2.   First, it reduces weight, controls sugar, and reduces stress. It also gives the joints (關(guān)節(jié)) enough movement, fresh air – if you walk in the morning. Regular walks help in the control of blood pressure. But the most important advantage is that it gives fitness to the heart.

    3.

Start walking slowly. Gradually increase the speed. Feel when the angina (心絞痛) is about to come. Stop, the feeling will go away. Walk again, but now the speed will be slower than the last time. Keep walking now and the angina will not come. This is the correct speed.

How to start?

Suppose, you are at the stage of Class I angina: start walking on Day One. Try to walk about 30 minutes. For Class II angina group, walking should be slow and they should start with 10-15 minutes. They should not walk fast. Class III angina patients should start with one minute at home on empty stomach. After two days, they should increase to two minutes.    4.

However, do not walk more than ten minutes a time.

Dos and don’ts on physical activity:

Heart patients must also know that they can do most of the activities where the heart rate does not go up. Sitting in an office, talking over the phone, discussing, driving car are some of the activities which do not increase the heart’s speed.     5.    As a matter of fact, stresses can also lead to other illnesses.

A. It has a great number of advantages.

B. Walking plays a very important role in helping a heart patient recover.

C. How to roughly judge the proper walking speed?

D. What is more important for the heart patient is to know the speed of walking.

E. But avoid all kinds of stresses, as stress can increase the heart’s speed.

F. How to increase the speed of walking?

G. Gradually they should increase the time but not the speed.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your blood. The key to your problem is that long nap(打盹,小睡)after dinner. If you didn't sleep for hours during the early part of the evening, you would be more ready to sleep at bedtime. If you didn't nap after dinner, you would not want to stay up so late, and you would not feel the need to take a sleeping pill. The pill is still working in your system when you get up in the morning. This helps account for the fact that you feel tired all day. You should get out of the habit of sleeping during the evening. Right after your evening meal, engage in some sort of physical activity - a sport such as bowling, perhaps. Or get together with friends for an evening of cards and conversation. Then go to bed at your usual time or a little earlier, and you should be able to get a good nights rest without taking a pill.

If you can get into the habit of spending your evenings this way, I am sure you will feel less tired during the day. At first it may be hard for you to go to sleep without taking a pill. If so, get up and watch television or do some jobs around your house until you feel sleepy. If you fall asleep and then wake up a few hours later, get up but do not take a sleeping pill. Read a while or listen to the radio, and make yourself a few hours'sleep that night, you will feel better in the morning than you usually feel after taking a pill. The next night you will be ready to sleep at an earlier hour.

The most important thing is to avoid taking that nap right after dinner and avoid taking pills.

1. According to the writer, it is difficult for you to go to sleep because .

  A. you get the habit of staying up late      B. you haven't taken sleeping pills

  C. you sleep for hours after dinner         D. you fail to do some exercises

A. Go to bed earlier than usual. B. Talk with friends after dinner.

C. Stay with friends after dinner. D. Do some physical labor.

3. You feel tired all day probably because .

A. you stay up too late B. you get up too early in the morning

C. you take sleeping pills D. you wake up too frequently at night

4. Which of the following is true according to the passage

A. You mustn't take sleeping pills in order to get a good night's sleep.

B. You should stay up if you want to sleep effectively.

C. Food is necessary at night if you fail to go to sleep.

D. It is very important to get out of the habit of taking a nap after dinner.

5. We may infer that the author is most probably a .

A. doctor B. scientist C.  reporter D. professor

Memo

To:     All Staff

From:  Jakie Mok , Secretary; Sports Development Committee

Date:   May 20, 2010

A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it . Here is a memo (備忘錄) for your reference when you answer the phones.

Sports 1:Basketball.

We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible . Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park .To cover the cost of hiring a bus , each student will have to pay $10 each time. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sports 2:Gym

We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧運動),all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Sports 3: Hiking

Hiking(遠(yuǎn)足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers . Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Sports 4:Swimming

The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Students selecting basketball had better register early.

 B. Students participating in gym should arrive at 6:00 pm.

C. Hiking usually begins at 2:30 pm and lasts 2 hours.

D. Students having swimming suits can take up swimming.

2.It can be inferred from the passage that

A. students taking part in basket ball will walk to the courts.

B. every student can gain admission to one of the four sports

C. hiking students can have a regular rest in the shade of trees

D. students taking up the four sports should bring bottles of water

3.It can be concluded that

A. each sport will take only on hour sports

B. students will be charged for the four sports

C. all the sports will take place at Kowloon Peak

D. teachers will accompany students on each sport

4.The purpose of the memo is to

A. attract students’ interest in the programme

B. require the parents to select a sport for their child

C. help the staff explain the programme to the parents

D. remind teachers and lifeguards to be present on time
