Time flies! This is a third year that I have been in this school. In the past two and a half years, our school had organized many activities. What impressed me best was an activity called “Learning to Farm”.In an autumn afternoon, we were sent to a farm which we learned to plant potatoes.Having been in the city for so a long time, we were so happy to go to the countryside. After divided into 3 groups, we started to work. Some students cut potatoes into pieces; some dug holes, and the others put the pieces into the hole, put the earth back and pushed them down hard.We continued doing that until all the work was done.Although we were exhausted, but we felt happy on our way back home.

Seated in a convertible (敞篷車) with the top down at 60 miles an hour, Mary looked at the flies that sat on top of Mark’s hair. How could they stay there? She wondered.

Mary had not seen Mark in years, until the other day when he came into the café where she worked. His appearance was different from when he was in high school. Now, he was a bit fat and thick glasses covered his eyes. However, that didn’t change Mary’s feelings for him at all. He had just bought a brand new red sports car and asked her if she would like to go for a ride and then have dinner with him. Her heart beat with excitement as he opened the door for her. She noticed something very strange as Mark got into the car and started to drive away. On the hair was a group of flies just sitting there.

Mary stared in amazement. It seemed the faster they drove, the more determined the flies were to stick to his hair.

Mary remained silent. She leaned forward and turned the radio on, to try to divert her attention away from the flies, but she couldn’t help thinking about them. She looked up at Mark, who was completely devoted to what was going on and continued to sing to the music while driving merrily along.

Finally, Mark pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road beside a diner and looked in the mirror and said, “Mary, I would like to comb my hair before we get something to eat. Could you reach under the seat and give me my hair cream?”

Mary reached under the seat and pulled out a camping backpack, which contained a round jar and started to laugh wildly as she pointed to the label (商標(biāo)).

“That’s not hair cream on your hair, Mark! It says it’s Fly Trap Glue!”

1.What can we learn from the text?

A. Mark had bought a new sports car for Mary.

B. Mark used to be a thin, handsome boy.

C. Mark and Mary had been in love for years.

D. Mary felt strange when she saw the red car.

2.What does the underlined word “divert” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Replace. B. Absorb. C. Take. D. Recover.

3.Why did Mary burst into laughter?

A. Because Mary played a trick on Mark.

B. Because their ride wasn’t well prepared.

C. Because Mark had prepared a jar of hair cream for her.

D. Because Mark had mistaken Fly Trap Glue for hair cream.

4.What can be the best title for this passage?

A. Stuck on you. B. Unchanged love.

C. A hair trick. D. A wonderful ride.

During Nelson Mandela’s 19 years in the prison on Robben Island, one particular commanding officer, Badenhorst, was the cruelest of them all:

“A few days before Badenhorst’s leaving the prison, I was called to the main office. General Steyn was visiting the island and wanted to know if we had any complaints. Badenhorst was there as I went through a list of demands. When I had finished, Badenhorst spoke to me directly.

He told me he would be leaving the island and added: ‘I just want to wish you people good luck’. I do not know if I looked dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的), but I was amazed. He spoke these words like a human being and showed a side of himself we had never seen before. I thanked him for his good wishes and wished him good luck too.

I thought about this moment for a long time afterwards. Badenhorst had perhaps been the most cold–blooded and cruelest commanding officer we had had on Robben Island. But that day in the office, he had showed that there was another side to his nature, a side that had been hidden but still existed.

It was obvious that all men, even the most seemingly cold-blooded, have a heart of kindness and that, if their hearts are touched, they are able to change. Actually, Badenhorst was not evil; his inhumanity (不人道) had been encouraged by an inhuman system. He behaved cruelly because he was rewarded for cruel behavior.”

1.When did the story happen?

A. Before Badenhorst left the prison.

B. Before Mandela gave demands.

C. After General Steyn took over the prison.

D. Just when Mandela was set free.

2.How did Mandela feel at what Badenhorst said?

A. Awkward. B. Surprised. C. Angry. D. Upset.

3.Why did Badenhorst become the cruelest according to Mandela?

A. He was born evil.

B. He seemed cold-blooded.

C. He was easily changed.

D. His cruelty was rewarded.

4. Which could be the best title of the passage?

A. Hide oneself or express oneself?

B. Hard to change or easy to change?

C. Cruel by name or cruel by nature?

D. To be a prisoner or to be a commander?

Owls(貓頭鷹) are mysterious creatures. We often think of them as scary. They sometimes live in abandoned houses. They fly without a sound through backyards at night. In stories, they appear with ghosts. When we hear an owl's familiar “wh?ooo...whooo...”,it can make us feel very frightened. Owls fly silently, without even a whisper of wings moving through the air. It's as though they appear out of nowhere—like ghosts on wings. Owls fly and hunt on the darkest of nights. An owl's night habits make it unique. Do these creatures of the night possess strange powers?

Owls possess unusual powers of sight and hearing, but they are not supernatural powers. They are natural adaptations that let them live most efficiently(高效地) at night. There is no reason to fear owls. Their habits make them helpful to humans. By hunting mice and other rodents(嚙齒目動(dòng)物),owls help to keep a natural balance between plant and animal life. Without owls, there would be a large number of rodents in farmers' fields and storage barns.

More than 100 species of owls occupy a variety of habitats around the world. A few oceanic islands and the Antarctic have no owls. The world's owls come in large, medium, small, smaller, and smallest. For example, the Eurasian eagle owl—one of the largest—has a body that is two to three feet long, with a wingspan(翼展) of up to five and one?half feet. The North American elf owl (the world's smallest owl) is five to six inches long and has a wingspan that measures slightly more than one foot.

Most male and female owls of the same species look alike, although females are usually larger. In some species, the female's colors are like those of the trees or grass where she makes her nest.

Baby owls, called chicks, stay with their parents until they are about three months old. They soon find their own hunting areas, where they may stay for the rest of their lives. Some owls can live 20 years or more.

1.Most people regard owls as________.

A.clever B.hard?working C.terrifying D.shy

2.Owls help humans in that they________.

A.help preserve the balance of nature

B.frighten rodents away from humans

C.have unusual powers

D.help guard backyards

3.What is special about owls?

A.They fly silently.

B.They are night hunters.

C.They possess supernatural powers.

D.They can be found around the world.

4.The third paragraph is mainly about owls'________.

A.habitats B.sizes C.species D.wingspans

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學(xué)年廣東肇慶高一上學(xué)期期末考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

I wasn't interested in becoming a model at first. I worked as a receptionist in a beauty shop during high school. It was in South Dakota. A woman who had worked for Vogue—a famous fashion magazine said to me, “Why don't you go to New York and be a model?”

So I went to New York at eighteen. I went to the first model agency, they thought that I was too long-waisted. It was too bad since I came all the way from South Dakota. I did an information check on the internet and found that Hunting Hartford had just bought the agency. I looked up in the telephone book and dialed. Then I went there. About half an hour later, the man who had just taken over the agency—he had been a male model before—came in. I was just staring at this unfamiliar man when he said, “You! Come into my office!”

How do you feel as a fashion model? Quite OK, I should say. But you stop thinking when you are working. It takes a lot of nervous energy as well because the camera goes one, two, three very fast and you have to move very fast. I like my job because it gives me freedom. I can have half a day off to do things I like. I can't do that if I do a normal job. I never like becoming a secretary. They have to sit in the office for eight hours a day, facing the same people.

Most models, after one or two years, can't be still very interested in it. But I like being a model. Maybe I was a born one, as many people say.

1.Who inspired the author's desire to become a model?

A. A woman customer in the beauty shop.

B. Hunting Hartford.

C. The author herself.

D. The author's father.

2.Why didn't the author return to South Dakota when she was first refused?

A. Because she had a strong desire to become a model.

B. Because she liked to be a receptionist at a beauty shop.

C. Because Hunting Hartford asked her not to go back.

D.Because South Dakota is far away from New York.

3.Why did the author like being a model?

A. Because she liked the woman customer.

B. Because she liked the freedom.

C. Because she liked to have a regular work schedule.

D. Because she liked Hunting Hartford.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Perseverance leads to your success.

B. Finding a job you like to do is important.

C. Both A and B.

D. Becoming a model is quite easy.
