When I was six, my mother placed me in a boarding home. For the next nine years, I never slept in a room that contained less than 30 other kids in it. So, when I was promoted to senior at the high school for my final year there, I had the greatest pleasure of rooming with just one other classmate, and the added feature of a semi-private bathroom.

We seniors also had the feature of walking around the campus in special hats, we called senior bonnets. So all the other kids would know we were the highest in the high school. As seniors, we frequently went on field trips outside the campus, including city museums, city hall, colleges and theatres. The highlight was a senior class trip to Washington, D.C., where we sat in on a session of Congress, visited the monument and many other government sites around the city.

Another benefit of being seniors was that many of us on athletic and other extra-curricular teams were elected to high ranking for the year. I had the honor and pleasure of being chosen captain of our state championship swim team, while my roommate was voted president of the drama club.

Graduation services were on a sunny day in June. Each of us had looked forward to this moment for ten years. Now we were going out on our own to complete freedom, and we should have been flooded with joy. However, to my surprise, I found myself crying, something I hadn’t done for years. I noticed many of my classmates usually proud of their macho guy(大男子氣概) attitudes, were also wiping away tears. We knew we would never be together again as we were on that graduation day. Our senior year ended with deep feelings of sadness for our loss, as well as joy for our emerging into a new world beyond the school campus.

1.What made the author feel most pleasant after becoming a senior for his last year?

A. He needn’t study in a boarding home from then on.

B. There would be at least 30 classmates in his class.

C. His best friend would share a room with him.

D. He would share a room with only one classmate.

2. Why did the author and his classmates wear senior bonnets at campus?

A. He could prove that they were from rich families.

B. They would be respected by the girls in his class.

C. Students of the lower grades would know their grades.

D. They would look fashionable and attractive.

3.According to the author, what was the best activity for the seniors?

A. Walking around the campus in special hats

B. Making a senior class trip to Washington, D.C.

C. Going on field trips outside the campus

D. Joining athletic and other extra-curricular teams

4.The author and his classmates can’t help crying at graduation services as .

A. their parents had marriage problems and were faced with divorce then

B. they were not admitted to their dreaming universities

C. he would say goodbye to his school and he would face new challenges

D. the headmaster gave a moving speech at the meeting

How to cope with yesmen

Have you ever had someone in your organization who was always agreeable? A type of person who always agrees with everyone else. 1..

We have most likely all met a yesman at one time or another. Yesmen are eager to please, but find it very difficult to voice their opinion. So what can you do as a leader to cope with (對付) them?

Talk to them. The first step is an honest and objective conversation about their behavior. __ 2._ Try to get them to see how they respond in these situations so they can start to see themselves objectively(客觀地) as well.

___3. Start with a recent time when they agreed with a decision, and ask for their opinion. Keep asking "why?" or "how come?" Acknowledge their views and let them know that the rest of the team is waiting to hear what they say.

Find out why they always agree. It may be they are just very agreeable people. 4.__ Identify the causes and work with them to reduce the external (外部的) barriers to having their voice heard.

Tell them they need to disagree, constructively, when they have the next opportu- nity. When that time comes about, don't embarrass them by putting them on the spot. Instead, ask them what they think, avoid yes-no questions, and use "why" and "how come" questions to get their thoughts out there for the benefit of the team. Thank them for their ideas. 5.

A. Ask what their opinions are.

B. They should provide value to the organization.

C. Or they feel like they will be saying something stupid.

D. Even if all the ideas presented conflict with each other!

E. Sometimes the person does not realize that they agree with everything.

F. Yesmen are a challenge in any organization that values individual contributions.

G. This will build their confidence and allow them to continue doing what you have started in the future.

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆遼寧大連第八中學(xué)高三上學(xué)期期中英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

The associates I hired in my bicycle and lawn mower shop like myself were never perfect; however, they were excellent. Working with them as they improved taught me new ways to show forgiveness, understanding, and patience.

One day the placement officer asked me to interview a young man who was having trouble finding a job. He told me that David was a little shy, did not talk much and was afraid to go on with interviews. He requested that I give David an interview just for practice. He plainly told David that I had no positions open at the time and the interview was just for practice.

When David came in for the interview, he hardly said a word. I told him what we did at the bicycle shop and showed him around. I told David to keep showing up because the number one thing an employer wanted in an associate was dependability.

David was very quiet (he was evaluated as a slow learner in school). Every ten days or so, for weeks after the interview, David walked into the bicycle shop and stood by the front door. He never said a word, just stood by the door.

One day, shortly before Christmas, a large truck came to the shop, packed with 250 new bicycles. It had to be unloaded right away or the driver would leave.

It was raining. Some of my workers (without physical limitations) chose not to brave the weather to get into work, so I was short-handed. It seemed everything was going wrong and on top of it, David came in the front door and just stood there. I looked at him and shouted, “Well, all right! Fill out a time card and help me unload this truck!”

David worked for my bicycle shop for eighteen years. He came to work every day thirty minutes early. He could talk; however, he rarely chose to. He drove my truck and made deliveries. The customers would praise David, saying, “He doesn’t talk, but he really shows you how to operate a lawn mower!”

1.The author finally hired David because________.

A. there were no other workers in the shop then

B. he needed someone who was willing to work then

C. David kept showing up

D. he realized David was dependable

2.We can infer from the last paragraph that_______.

A. the author feels lucky to hire David

B. David has had his character changed through work

C. the author prefers David to be more outgoing

D. some customers just play jokes on David

3.The author gave David an interview to _______.

A. find a person who is reliable

B. find a part-time worker in need

C. give him some practice

D. show sympathy for him

4.The author’s tone in describing David is full of ______.

A. pity B. wonder

C. disappointment D. appreciation

For most kids, height isn’t something they can change, so what do you do if you don’t like how tall or short you are? It might be girls feeling too tall and boys feeling too short but some really tall boys might not like all that height and some shorter girls might get tired of all the jokes or of feeling like they’re staying little while their friends are growing up.

If you are still worried about your height, talk to your parents and your doctor. Most kids don’t have a growth problem that needs help from a doctor, but it’s always OK to ask if you’re concerned.

So for most kids, it seems like there’s not much to do but wait to see how it all turns out. But you can do something right now: eat healthy and take care of yourself. If you get the nutrition(營養(yǎng)), sleep, and exercise you need, you’re likely to reach your maximum height. In other words, you’ll grow as tall as you were meant to grow.

And even though you may hear people say it, taking extra vitamins or supplements(補品) that you can buy in a store won’t help you get taller. Just stick to a healthy diet if you want to be the tallest you can be!

Kids who wish they weren’t so tall should still eat healthy and take care of themselves, of course. Eating less won’t make you end up any shorter unless you really starved yourself and made yourself sick.

As they get older, most kids learn to feel comfortable with their height, whether they turn out tall, short, or somewhere in between.

1. What is this text mainly about?

A. Some tips on how to grow taller.

B. Some advice on height worries.

C. Some problems kids are facing.

D. Some factors that affect height.

2. If you want to grow taller, you are advised to do the following except _____.

A. get enough sleep B. take some exercise

C. take extra vitamins D. get enough nutrition

3.We’ll feel comfortable with our height _____.

A. after we tell the parents

B. after we see the doctor

C. when we grow taller

D. when we get older

4.Who does this text written for?

A. Kids. B. Parents. C. Doctors. D. Teachers
