My wife passed away seven and a half years ago, and I went through a huge depression (消沉), the worst time in my life. I even wanted to end my life. I continued to work as a small-town doctor at my medical clinic in Kilauea, Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. On a family trip, we turned on the TV and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. I said to my kids, “I’m going to Afghanistan.” International Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in some provinces where people had no health care. Eventually, the clinics were serving 27,000 patients a month. I had such a sense of accomplishment, a sense of purpose. My depression went completely away.

I go wherever disasters strike: Indonesia after the tsunami, Pakistan after the earthquake. I was just in Kenya. After their presidential election, at least a thousand people were killed and hundreds of thousands were forced out. We set up mobile clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees (難民). Measles broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and medical equipment were also problems.

When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But really, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, my wife fell into a coma (昏迷). I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit, the exciting adventures we would have. I think about this moment many times during my “adventures”. I did not know then how prophetic (先知的) those words would be. She is with me still.

In the past, going to a piano teacher was the most popular way to learn how to play the piano. You could get one-to-one teaching and have the opportunity to learn as much as the teacher knew. If you didn’t have private lessons, you could still learn the piano, but you would have to teach yourself. This was easy for some, but very difficult for most. However, with technology developing today, there is at last another way that you can take piano lessons. You can take an online course.

An online course is much cheaper than a private lesson. If a private lesson costs 30-40 dollars per week, just think about how quickly that adds up. You can take a whole online course in piano for just a fraction(小部分) of the money that you would spend on weeks of private lessons. Also, private lessons are usually only one hour per week. So you would have to wait for your next lesson to continue your learning. However, online piano courses are quite different.

With an online piano course, you can work at your own pace. You can also take as many lessons per week as you want, or go back and listen to your last lesson if you have forgotten anything. Most adults who want to learn how to play the piano enjoy being able to go back and listen to the lessons again.

Of course if you need someone to sit beside you and offer you immediate feedback(反饋) as you are playing, you might not get that from an online piano course. However, the lessons online can be viewed(觀看) at any time, or as often as you’d like, which means that you can get your own type of feedback from an online piano course.

1.This passage mainly tells us ______.

A. the disadvantages of the traditional ways of learning to play the piano

B. the differences between traditional piano courses and online courses

C. why people prefer online piano courses to traditional piano courses

D. the advantages of learning to play the piano through an online course

2.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 want to tell us?

A. That private piano lessons shouldn’t be that expensive.

B. That taking private piano lessons really costs a lot.

C. That not everyone can afford to take piano lessons.

D. That the price for private piano lessons has increased greatly.

3.How did the writer make his points clear?

A. By giving detailed data.

B. By giving many examples

C. By writing about his own experiences

D. By comparing with the old ways.

閱讀下面短文并回答問(wèn)題,然后將答案寫(xiě)到答題卡相應(yīng)的位置上(請(qǐng)注意問(wèn)題后的詞數(shù)要求)

[1] Sooner or later everyone has to write something-a thank-you note, a report at a meeting, a complaint or an apology. If you have writing assignment(作業(yè)) in school, or if you still fear to put pen to paper, facing that empty page is almost as frightening as you are facing a tiger. How to write it? There is no mystery. Clear writing is just clear thinking. Here are some techniques for you.

[2] Thinking on paper

Sit down with a pencil and paper or at the computer screen and start outlining(概述,略述) what you want to say, why it is important, why it matters, and what its impact is on the reader. Just get the ideas down. The next step is to go back and put them in order.

[3] Writing first sentence

Try to make your first sentence catch the reader’s eyes, because ________, the reader is not going to read on. Get a good, clear lead sentence that summarizes your points and answers the reader’s question “What is in it for me?” if you can not do it in one sentence, then do it in two or three but keep them short.

[4] Remembering the reader

Short, simple words are better than long words. Short sentences are better than long sentences. Remember that the goal is to communicate, not to express yourselves. Most people are so devoted to what they want to say that they forget somebody else has to be able to read it. Too much information makes you lose readers before they get to the meat(實(shí)質(zhì)) of what you want to say.

[5] Reading and rewriting

Read out what you have written loud, and listen for any awkward(笨拙的) sentences. All good writers read, then rewrite. Back off a little bit from what you are writing. It is an old standard, but if you can, write something and come back a day later.
