Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can cause heart attack or stroke(中風(fēng)) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one report of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants(污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. Another study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers to be of “moderate”(良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

These days a green building means more than just the color of the paint. Green building can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices.

Green building means “reducing the impact (影響) of the building on the land”Taryn Holowka of the U.S Green Building Council in Washington, D. C. said.

According to Holowka, buildings account for(占了) 65 percent of total U.S. electricity use.

But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don't destroy forests.

Marty Dettling is the project manager for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country's first green high-rise building. According to Dettling, “We've reduced our energy use by one-third and our water by 50 percent.”

The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power. “On the lace(邊) of the building we have solar panels which change the sun's energy into electricity,” Dettling explained.

The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water by reusing it.

Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources. Anyhow, Holowka said, “It's going to be big.”

1.A green building is often built on an area of land________.

A. which has thick forests around

B. which has already been developed for building

C. where people of high income live

D. where traveling around by car is most convenient

2.When Holowka says in the last paragraph, "It's going to be big", she means that green buildings________.

A. will be more comfortable

B. will take the place of traditional buildings

C. will become popular in the future

D. will be more environmentally friendly

3.What is the main subject discussed in the text?

A. Dettling designed the first green building in the U. S.

B. Energy shortage calls for buildings of new design.

C. Green buildings help save environment.

D. The Solaire serves as a model of high buildings.

4.Which of the following statements is WRONG?

A. The Solaire can reduce the impact of the building on the land.

B. Everyone is not eager to move into a green building.

C. Marty Dettling has come up with the idea of green buildings.

D. In the U.S, buildings consume(消耗) more than half of the total electricity.

Richie Kraus thinks all kids should receive birthday presents. And he's willing to give up his own presents to make that happen.

When Richie was six, he helped collect holiday gifts for children whose families couldn't afford presents. He started thinking about how much he liked getting presents on his birthday. He asked his mom, "If we get kids presents during the holidays, who gets them presents on their birthdays?"

Richie wanted to raise money for those birthday presents. So his mom helped him create the 2U Fund. The name 2U came from the well-known song "Happy Birthday to You."

Richie explains how the fund works: "On our birthdays, we ask our friends to make a donation instead of giving us presents." Richie attaches a special sticker to his party invitations. The sticker tells about the 2U Fund and invites guests to participate, Richie and his mom then give the money to a local charity that has agreed to partner with them. The people at the charity make sure the donations go toward birthday presents for kids in need.

Richie has had three 2U parties. "It just feels really, really good to help other kids," he says.

Richie has encouraged others to try giving up some of their birthday presents to help others. His younger brother, Max, had a 2U party. Some of Richie's friends did, too. He also spoke about the idea at a summer camp and at a school assembly (集會). "There were close to 200 students and teachers in the assembly," Richie' s teacher, Janel McCormick, says. "They all wanted to help support 2U."

Since Richie and his family started the 2U Fund, dozens of kids have helped raise more than $7,000. That money has bought dolls, books, and many other birthday toys for kids in need.

1.Before Richie created the 2U Fund, he .

A. had very few friends

B. had done some charity work

C. had seldom received birthday presents

D. had already donated some birthday presents

2.To help kids in need, Richie' s 2U parties mainly .

A. hold birthday parties for them

B. invite them to attend the parties

C. prepare birthday presents for them

D. raise money for their birthday presents

3.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?

A. All of Richie' s schoolmates plan to hold 2U parties.

B. Richie is praised for his kindness.

C. Richie' s acts of kindness have spread.

D. Richie has made more friends.

科目:高中英語 來源:2015-2016學(xué)年云南云天化中學(xué)高一12月月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

If man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan or Raina. They recently donated (捐贈) blood to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home: they visited an animal bloodmobile.

Like the Red Cross vehicles for humans, the University of Pennsylvania’s traveling vet lab goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. The bloodmobile makes weekly rounds through Philadelphia and New Jersey.

Like humans, not every dog is qualified(合格的) to donate blood. The dogs are examined for health first. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be under 8 year old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints(品脫) a year, which can help animals suffering from illness like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car.

Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. She said she wouldn’t have taken the dog to Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia, which is twice as far from her home. “I was very, very excited that she had the right blood that was needed to help another dog out,” said Lucas. “We’ll surely do it again.”

Just like people, the donors get a snack and a heart-shaped sticker immediately after giving. What’s more, they receive dog food to take home.

If dogs are doing what they can to save other dogs, why can’t we do it to save other people? Next time you hesitate(猶豫) over whether to donate blood or not, think of the dogs.

1.The writer mentions Rover, Glow, Ivan and Raina in Para. 1 mainly because _________.

A. they are man’s best friends.

B. they are common names for dogs.

C. they get along well with other dogs.

D. they have donated blood to other dogs.

2.What do we know about the traveling vet lab?

A. It is a Red Cross vehicle.

B. It collects dogs’ blood for other dogs.

C. It travels through Philadelphia every day.

D. It was donated by the University of Pennsylvania.

3.What can we learn from Para.4?

A. Sandy Lucas is unwilling to let her dog donate blood.

B. The bloodmobile welcomes dogs from anywhere in the city.

C. Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia is popular.

D. The animal bloodmobile has made it easier for dogs to donate blood.

4.By writing the last paragraph, the author wants to ________.

A. ask us to help dogs.

B. show the importance of dogs.

C. encourage us to donate blood.

D. compare humans with dogs.
