I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well. As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, “No.”

The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl’s delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier (收銀員) and whispered something in her ear. The casher smiled and put the package under the counter.
I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!
The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I’ll never forget what she said to him. “Daddy, didn’t Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course they did, honey.” To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!”
I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.

Homeboy Goes to Harvard University
On January 11, 2007, as students sat and listened, a very important guest speaker named Richard, spoke to the students in the lecture hall. He not only showed the potential(潛能)within young adults, but  encouraged them to work hard at their lessons.
Richard was a young child when his mother died and his father walked out. He was forced into many different foster homes(寄養(yǎng)家庭)where he felt unhappy. He did not know that his life was taking a turn for the worst.
His uncle, after getting out of prison, got him into drugs and alcohol. His uncle taught him that his place in life was either to be in prison or die trying to be “a man.” His uncle’s teaching almost started affecting him until a very important person came into his life: a teacher. This teacher taught him there is a place in the world for everyone and it isn’t related to drugs.
Richard is now a Harvard University graduate and has a great and loving family. Why? He was taught to have respect not only for others, but for himself.

A major new development in system of work in Britain is taking place. Flexible working hours, or “Flextime”, are catching on fast, and trend is continuing. In 1973, over 500 organizations had adopted the idea, and by 1974, this number had risen to over 200,000.
Flexible working hours were invented in Germany in the late 1960’s, but reached Britain only in 1972. The system allows workers to start and finish work whenever they want, with only two requirements. These are, firstly, that all workers must present for certain “key” times in the day, and secondly, that all workers must work an agreed total number of hours per week.
The system had proved a total success wherever it has been tried. A survey of 700 workers on flexible hours showed three main advantages: a better balance between working and private life, avoidance of the need to travel during rush hours and the ability to finish a certain task before leaving.
From the employer’s point of view, the system tends to increase productivity, reduce labour turnover and give workers a greater sense of duty. At first, “Flexible” was mainly confined to white-collar workers, but it is now being applied to manual workers too.

A.visitors come to the plants
B.a(chǎn)ll workers must be at work

“Down-to-earth” means someone or something that is honest, practical and easy to deal with. It is   36  to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to and   37  other people as equals. A down-to-earth person is just the   38  of someone who acts important and proud.
Down-to-earth persons   39  be important members of society, of course.   40  they do not let their importance “go to their heads”. They do not   41  themselves to be better persons than others of less importance. Someone who is filled with his own importance and pride, often without cause, is   42  to have “his nose in the air”. There is   43  way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans   44  another expression that means almost the same as “down-to-earth”. The expression is “both-feet-on-the-ground”. Someone with both-feet-on-the-ground is a person with a good   45  of reality. He   46  what is called “common sense”. He may have   47 , but he does not allow them to   48  his knowledge of what is real.
The opposite kind of   49  is one who has his “head-in-the-clouds”. A man with his-head-in-the-clouds is a dreamer whose   50  is not in the real world.
51 , such a dreamer can be brought back to earth.   52  words from a teacher can usually bring a day-dreaming student down-to-earth.
Usually, the person who is down-to-earth is very   53  to have both feet on-the –ground.  54  we have both our feet on-the –ground, when we are down-to-earth, we act   55  and openly towards others. Our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.

When I was struggling with cancer a few years ago,my wife and I formed our own “couple caution circle”.Anytime a doctor came with news of my progress,my wife would give me a big hug. The reports were seldom good during the early stages of my illness, and one day a doctor brought particularly frightening news.Staring at my reports,he said in a low voice,“It doesn’t look like you’re going to make it.”
Before I could ask him a question,my wife stood up,handed me my clothes, adjusted the tubes fastened to my body and said,“Let’s get out of here. This man is a risk to your health.” As she helped me struggle to the door, the doctor came near us.“Stay back,” demanded my wife.“Stay away from us.”
As we walked together down the hall, the doctor attempted to catch up with us.“Keep going,” said my wife, pushing the intravenous (靜脈注射的) stand.“We’re going to talk to someone who really knows what is going on.” Then she held up her hand to the doctor.“Don’t come any closer to us.”
