One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts,it came without wrap(包裝).
On September 11 th , 1 958,Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift, and here it is.” What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own.I played with it day and night. I sang to it, I told it stories.I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however,I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it.Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days,I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”,“pitiful",and “dying”, which sounded Ominous
Christmas was coming, “Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. I’d never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning.Dad jumped out of bed to answer it.From my bedroom I heard him say, “What? He’s all right?” He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!” “Thank God!” I heard Mum cry.
From the window upstairs,I watched my parents rush out to the car.I had never seen them so happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty: they were filled with love !

Researchers are placing robotic dogs(機器狗)in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans. Alan Beck,an expert in human animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards,a professor of nursing, are leading the animal assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged,or stimulated(刺激),”Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote(使……成為現(xiàn)實)that, especially for those without friends or help. A robotic dog could be a solution.”
In the study, the robot, called AIBO,is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activities before and after AIBO. Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.
“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice,”says a seventy year old lady.“When I’m watching TV,he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down. He has a mind of his own.”
The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it. A robotic dog removes exercises and feeding concerns.
“At the beginning,it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry.”Beck says.“But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”
Hopefully, down the road, these robotic pets could become a more valuable health helper. They will record their masters’ blood pressure, oxygen levels,or heart rhythms. AIBOs may even one day have games that can help stimulate old people’s minds.

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品雜貨), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
小題1:Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A.They used it for work and daily life.
B.It was their only possession(財產(chǎn)).
C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed.

小題2:We can infer from the passage that __________.
A.the couple worked 60 hours a week

D.life was hard for the young family
小題3:How did people get to know the couple’s problem?
A.From a stranger.
B.From a newspaper.
C.From TV news
D.From radio broadcasts.
小題4:What do the couple learn from their experience?
A.Strangers are usually of little help.
B.One should take care of their bike.
C.News reports make people famous.
D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.
小題5:From this story, we can see humanity is __________.
A.selfish
B.commercial
C.kind

My l4-year-old son, John, and I spotted the coat which was hanging at a secondhand clothing store in Northampton Mass. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were   36  itself up. The coat had beautiful tailoring, a Fifth Avenue label and a(an)  37  price of $28, which was popular just then with   38  , but could cost several hundred dollars new. This coat was even better, bearing that   39  of classic elegance. John tried it on and the fit was perfect.
John   40  the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big smile "Did the kids like your coat?" I asked. "They loved it," he said,   41  folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat. Over the next few weeks, a   42  came over John. Agreement replaced contrariness and reasoned discussion replaced fierce   43 . He became more mannerly and   44 , eager to please. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him   45  his behavior.
When I mentioned this incident to his teacher and   46  what caused the changes, she said laughing. "It   47  be his coat!" Another teacher told him she was giving him a good   48  not only because he had earned   49  but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend “Could this be John?" he asked surprisingly,   50  John's new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.
John and I both know we should never   51  a person's clothes for the real person within them.   52  there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see and for   53  what is on the inside to what is on the outside.
For John it is a time when it is as easy to try on different approaches to   54  as it is to try on a coat. The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead, a vast landscape   55  all the doors are open. And he could picture himself walking through those doors wearing his wonderful, magical coat.

My father was in the navy, which meant that my mother was married to both my father and the sea. As was often the case, we had to pack our belongings into boxes and   36   those we had grown to love. We would arrive at our new home and find ourselves once again   37  at the pier(碼頭)waving good-bye to my father as his   38   pulled him away from us. Leaving a promising career is just one of the   44  which my mother made for my family as we moved around the world with our father every three years or so.   45  she had to deal with only a small budget, my mother   46  managed to make each house to be the very home that is safe and   47 .
This probably sounds like a depressing way to live,   48  with two small children: “single” parenthood, short-term friendships, and the inability to   49   a career or establish a home. No matter how difficult the life was, she was always having a   54  attitude. She always had strength in the face of struggle and change. My mother was so   55  all those years of my childhood — she was my island in a sea of change. She is my hero.
