Are you a man or a mouse? When people ask this question they want to know if you think you are a brave person or a coward(膽小鬼). But you will never really know the answer to that question until you are tested in real life. Some people think they are brave, but when they come face to face with real danger, they act like cowards. Other people think of themselves as cowardly, but when they meet danger, they act like heroes.?
Lenny Sputnik had always thought of himself as a nervous person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and his health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. Then, on 15th January 1982, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. Then he saw a woman in the ice-cold water. Suddenly Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very calm and did a very courageous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, swam to the woman, and kept her head above the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny Sputnik, it was not seventy-nine.?
When you are in a very dangerous situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. This chemical is called adrenalin. With adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and are ready to fight or run away. However, when you are completely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this happens, the muscles become very hard and you find that you cannot move at all. You are then disabled with fear. That is why, when we are very frightened, we sometimes say that we are ‘petrified’. This word comes from the Greek word ‘peters’ which means ‘stone’. We are so frightened we have become like stone.?

We should show respect to everybody, especially our elders because they are ahead of us — in age, in wisdom and maturity, in experience and education. Our   36  have done a lot for us, directly or indirectly and most of us   37  everything to their kindness and love.
When we   38  them respect, whether it is by bowing to them, or   39   them with a smile, or offering them any help they need, it is one way of   40  our own love and gratitude to them.   41 , elders have also been through all the years you are   42  and know a little more about the world than you do.
It is   43  that you do not agree with the belief of your elders, but this is nothing new. All younger generations have always   44  with their elders and it is these differences that bring changes in human   45 . However much you disagree with them, give them credit for their   46 .
With changing times and   47  influences, youngsters no longer know what is interpreted as disrespect to elders. Youngsters should   48  express their views and if there are arguments, they should not   49  their voices.
If there is no space on sofas or chairs, children will immediately   50  their places, and sit on the carpet. In buses and trains, youngsters are   51  to give up their places to older people. This is not a   52  of who has more rights. It is simply that those who are younger have the strength to bear   53 , or tolerate unpleasantness, so it is natural to show consideration to those who are older and perhaps at a   54  disadvantage.
When you do simple things as a mark of respect, elders become   55  that youngsters care for them, and they respond with affection and kindness.

Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to  16 .
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph 17 we realized we were   18  . Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand new $20 bill. I was so   19  because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on   20  seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line.   21  I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About half way through the meal, I   22   I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just   23   out, and nobody had noticed, I felt terrible.
My conscience( 良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t  24 over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and   25   for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I  26  to give myself the pleasure of an ice-cream for   27   that someone would say, “ Hey, Jeff, why don’t you use the change   28   the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so   29  of my cash now.
For the next two years, whenever I was   30  of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “ Don’t think about it...”
I have learned two things from this   31 . Maybe I was a fool for   32 in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a   33  pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away from what you have done, your conscience   34  up with you.
This reflect the saying, “ A coward(懦夫) dies a thousand deaths; a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “ 35 ” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.

Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.
1.Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with a person.Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it’s very easy after taking a picture to say “If you’d like I can email it to you”.This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them know about it.
2.Eat alone in public
You might feel self-conscious eating by yourself but it has an important benefit:you are much easier to approach when you are alone.People may be afraid of interrupting you or being rude if you are in a conversation with someone else.Bring a book or newspaper to read (this will make  you feel less self-conscious).Plus,having an interesting book with you will give others an excuse to start a conversation if they’ve read it.
3.Join a class,sports team,or club
Yoga, salsa dancing, volleyball,Toastmasters (a public speaking club),a class for work, etc. Take up a new hobby or continue an old one!
These are all great places to meet new people, primarily because you will be forced to see the same people over and over again in the class. You will automatically make friends with them if you have a common interest and are forced to see each other again.
Tips:
* In the beginning.never turn down an invitation from someone, even if it’s something you wouldn’t normally do.
* Email your new friends with fun things to do instead of always asking what their plans are, If they have a better plan you can drop (放棄) yours and join them. This will help establish(建立) you as someone who is contributing value instead of just taking it (people want this in a friend) .
*Don’t let little things in life upset you or be a negative person.People don’t want to be around someone like that!
