Like human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes(打噴嚏), then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold.

A dog's cold can get over after a few days without treatment but it totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve its immune power(免疫力)to get rid of the cold naturally. Following are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold.

You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet(獸醫(yī))or is healthy for your pet. Increase the intake of food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E.

Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast.

Increase the fluid(流質(zhì))intake as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth(肉湯)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染).

Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nasal(鼻的)passage wet, which helps proper breathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering.

These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. However, if you are not able to find any improvement in its health, then turn to the vet for help immediately. Take your dog for regular checkups so as to avoid complications(并發(fā)癥).

1.From the first paragraph we know about __________.

A.the difficulty in keeping a dog as a pet

D.causes and symptoms(癥狀)of cold in dogs

2.When your dog catches cold, you should feed it on _______.

A.its favorite food B.the suggested food by the vet

A.keep it inside during cold and wet weather

B.leave it inside the bathroom full of steam

C.let it eat too much solid(固體)food

D.keep it sleeping on carpets at home

4.It can be learnt from the text that _________.

A.a(chǎn) dog’s cold can always disappear naturally

B.it’s quite easy to make a sick dog recover from cold

C.treating a dog’s cold sometimes needs a vet’s help

A lot of people say math is not their strong suit. One New Jersey parent wants to help change that. Laura Overdeck grew up with numbers. She always helped measure ingredients when her mother baked, and she learned about angles from her father. She went on to major in astrophysics in college. Overdeck knew she wanted her own children to be good at math, too.

“And when our first child was about two, we just started giving her a math problem every night,” Overdeck said. The problem was usually a story, involving animals, cars or candies that let the kid count. “Our third child started, at age two, yelling that he wanted his own math problem because he saw his brother and sister doing it. And we thought, ‘Wow, we have a household where math is the popular thing at bedtime,’” Overdeck said.

In February, Overdeck launched Bedtime Math, an Internet website where she posts daily puzzles for children. Overdeck is particularly keen to hook children on numbers before they go to school. So why introduce little ones to math so early?

Sain Beilock, an expert on performance anxiety, says the more fun and familiar math is early on, the less likely children will feel nervous when they start to learn math in school. “My lab has shown recently that kids as early as first grade report feeling anxious about doing math,” Beilock said.

“You can hear totally educated adults say, ‘You know I’m just not that good at math.’ or ‘I’m kind of afraid of math.’ And that’s a totally acceptable thing for a well-educated person to say, but you never hear them say, ‘Well, you know, I’m just not that good at reading,’” Overdeck said. She wants children and their parents to become as fluent in numbers as they are in Harry Potter.

1.Overdeck majored in astrophysics because she _______.

A. was really fond of mathematics

B. hoped to change math education in the US

C. had an interest in physics

D. would like her children to be good at math

2.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A. Toys can be used to encourage kids in solving math problems.

B. Math will become more popular in every household.

C. Math is enjoyable in Overdeck’s family.

D. The third child is cleverer than his brother and sister.

3.Beilock’s attitude towards Overdeck’s idea is _______.

A. agreeable B. puzzled

C. anxious D. critical

4.The unfavorable situation of the US in math ability is shown by _______.

A. the popularity of Bedtime Math

B. children’s performance anxiety in school

C. people’s response to math

D. adults’ great fondness for Harry Potter

The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (過濾) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

1.In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to______.

A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

B. have their sleep patterns observed all night

C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial

2.The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to____________.

A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

B. fall asleep more easily after reading

C. become less energetic the next morning

D. have a lot more melatonin secretion

3.The special software recently developed can______.

A. remove the blue light from your devices completely

B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

C. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. No e-reading in bed before sleep

B. New software for night e-readers

C. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

D. No games on iPad in bed
