Recently we have had a discussion about whether middle school students should go abroad for short-term overseas study tours. Opinions are divided as follows.

About 60% of us think it wise to go on short-term overseas study tours, through which we can get closer to some famous schools and have a better knowledge of them. Meanwhile, we can also experience the life of studying abroad ahead of schedule.

The rest of us hold different views. In their opinion, the fees are too high for most parents to afford. Besides, some middle school students just want to follow the trend and show off.

Personally, short-term overseas study tours may be a motivation for us to study harder. It can also serve as a test showing whether a student a able to live an independent life abroad or not.

Last year, over 206,000 students from the United States studied abroad. Does that number surprise you? These students already know the benefits of studying abroad. You may be wondering why you should study abroad. Here are some answers for you.

 Timing

The absolutely best time in your life to study abroad is when you are in college. If you miss this opportunity, it’s almost impossible for you to do it later in life.

 To gain cross-cultural experience

Life overseas makes you see your everyday world in a whole new light. You don’t even realize it, but our culture shapes the way we view the world and affects us every minute of the day. Differences in culture are more than just differences in language, food, clothing and art.

To improve your communication skills and your self-confidence

People who study abroad tend to be willing to take risks, willing to put themselves in unusual situations, and able to solve problems.

To become more fluent in a language or to learn a new language

The world market is becoming smaller, and many companies require a second language. Foreign languages are not only valuable in the job market but also valuable in the real world.

 For the adventure

Travel to other cities within your host country and around neighboring countries. As you get to know your new classmates, roommates, and host family, you will gain a unique view on the host culture. Discover the differences and, more importantly, the many similarities between your worlds. The friendships you make will last long after the program.

 To learn more about yourself

Find out who you really are. What are your limits? How do you overcome the difficulties you’ve never encountered before? How independent are you? These questions are hard to answer until you are removed from your usual surroundings. After solving difficult problems on your own overseas, you’ll find that almost nothing will confuse you at home. Students who study abroad commonly report that their study abroad experience actually changed their lives.

There is a problem each of us faces in following advice on emotional healing: apologizing is difficult. We are trapped in what we think of ourselves by holding onto our pride. We can be selfish and not willing to admit our most obvious mistakes. Pride eats away at us as we argue or ignore the mistake.

It's happened to me. I have had too much pride and selfishness to apologize to a loved one I hurt. When I did want to apologize, I couldn't bring myself to face the other person. This is the pride I'm talking about. Maybe apologies come difficult for men because they're expected to be dominant. It's like the joke that a man never asks for directions when lost. Ladies are more emotionally open than guys and are willing to express it. Still, both genders wonder how to correctly apologize.

In shifting the focus on apologizing away from you, what does not apologizing do to other people? They feel hurt that you are not willing to communicate your mistake. They lose trust in you as you hide behind your mistake avoiding reality. They become angry with you, wondering why you do not tell them the truth. They may begin to counter your lack of apologies by not apologizing themselves and from this the relationship goes downhill as the two of you get caught in a power struggle.

You need to communicate your mistakes. A mistake you made is like a scratch and by not apologizing you are making the scratch a deeper wound and rubbing salt into it. You need to stop hurting the other person and yourself by learning to apologize. There is real power in apologizing and emotional healing.

1.Why are men more unwilling to make apologies?

A. They don't intend to hurt other people.

B. They expect others to forgive them.

C. They don't want to be considered weak.

D. They aren't good at expressing themselves.

2.What bad effect will there be if you refuse to apologize for your mistakes?

A. Other people won't pay attention to you.

B. You will lose confidence in yourself.

C. You won't be forgiven even if you tell the truth.

D. The friendship will get hurt and go worse.

3.From the last paragraph, it can be inferred that .

A. communication can stop you making mistakes

B. mistakes would turn into deeper scratches

C. apologizing is good for you and other people

D. apologizing is the most powerful in emotional healing
