I was in my third year of teaching creative writing at a high school in New York, when one of my students,15-year-old Mikey, gave me a note from his mother. It explained his absence from class the day before.

I had seen Mikey himself writing the note at his desk. Most parental-excuse notes I received were forged by my students. If I were to deal with them,I’d be busy 24 hours a day.

The forged excuse notes made a large pile, with writing that ranged from imaginative to crazy. The writers of those notes didn’t realize that honest excuse notes were usually dull, “Peter was late because the alarm clock didn’t go off. ”

Isn’t it remarkable,I thought, how the students complained and said it was hard putting 200 words together on any subject? But when they produced excuse notes, they were brilliant.

So one day I typed out a dozen excuse notes and gave them to my classes. I said, “They’re supposed to be written by parents, but actually they are not. True,Mikey?” The students looked at me nervously.

“Now,this will be the first class to study the art of the excuse note—the first class, ever,to practice writing them.

You’re so lucky to have a teacher like me who has taken your best writing and turned it into a subject worthy of study. ”

Everyone smiled as I went on, “You used your imaginations. So try more now. Today I’d like you to write ‘An Excuse Note from Adam to God’ or ‘An Excuse Note from Eve to God?. ” Heads went down. Pens raced across paper. For the first time ever I saw students so careful in their writing that they had to be asked to go to lunch by their friends. The next day everyone had excuse notes. Heated discussions followed. The headmaster entered the classroom and walked up and down, looking at papers, and then said, “I’d like you to see me in my office. ”

When I stepped into his office,he came to shake my hand and said, “I just want to tell you that that lesson, that task, whatever the hell you were doing, was great. Those kids were writing on the college level. Thank you. ”

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain for almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. If we didn’t see some rain soon,we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son,Billy, walking towards the woods. He was obviously walking with great effort. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again, towards the house.

Moments later, however,he was once again walking towards the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally,my curiosity got the best of me. I went out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns (荊棘) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. As I leaned in to spy on him,I saw the most amazing site.

Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from the heavy loss of water, lifting its head with great effort to drink the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands.

I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life. As my tears began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops...and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky.  It was as if God,himself, was weeping with pride.

SUMMER SKIN CARE—RIGHT OR WRONG?

In summer everybody needs to be careful with the sun. Do you know how to spend time in the sun without burning or damaging your skin? Read the ten rules below. Some of them are RIGHT and the others are WRONG.

(1) Always wear a baseball cap. It protects you from the sun and looks cool, too.

WRONG You need to wear a hat,but choose your hat carefully. Baseball caps protect your eyes, but they don’t protect your ears or your neck. Use a proper sun hat.

(6) You need to use sun cream even on a cloudy day in summer.

RIGHT The sun can damage your skin even on a cloudy day.

(2) Use sun cream. You need to put it on at least twenty minutes before you go out.

RIGHT Sun cream starts to work twenty minutes after you put it on.

(7) On a hot sunny day, wear light-coloured clothes— white and yellow are best.

WRONG Light-coloured clothes don’t protect you from the sun. The best solution is to wear dark-coloured clothes.

(3) Put sun cream around your eyes and on your eyelids to protect them from the sun.

WRONG Sun cream hurts the eyes. Wear sunglasses instead.

(8) You need to spend time in the sun for healthy skin.

RIGHT You need to spend time in the sun to get enough vitamin D for healthy skin and bones (骨頭) ,but don’t forget to use sun cream. Without sun cream you have a bigger risk of skin cancer.

(4) You only need a little sun cream. Too much sun cream is bad for your skin.

WRONG You need to use a lot of sun cream. The sun dries out your skin. Sun cream moisturi-zes (滋潤) and protects it.

(9) You need to spend a lot of money to get a good sun cream.

WRONG There are many different kinds of sun cream. Find the one that is best for you. Expensive ones are not always better than cheap ones. Use a sun cream labelled (標(biāo)明) SPF30+ and it should give you the same protection as one that is more expensive.

(5 ) Put more sun cream on every two hours.

RIGHT You need to put sun cream on often, especially when you’re swimming.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about aggression in other ani?mals. This sometimes happens with humans, too. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me,pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.

From my wheelchair experience,I see the best in people, but sometimes I feel sad because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don't get to see this soft side of others. Often,we try every way possible to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when we stop pretending we're brave or strong do we allow people to show the kindness that's in them.

Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway,I began to feet unwell and drove more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get im?patient and angry, with some speeding up alongside me,horning (按喇口八) or even shouting at me. At that moment,I decided to do something I had never done in twenty-four years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and drove on at a really low speed.

No more angry shouts and no more horns! When I put on my flashlights,I was saying to the other drivers, "I have a problem here. I am weak and doing the best I can. ”And everyone under?stood. Several times,I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn't get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting im?patient and angry, they waited, knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.

Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don't feel that way. But those are few and far between. More often,it would be better if we don't pretend we feel strong when we feel weak or pretend that we're brave when we're scared.

1. The author has discovered that people will feel happy when      .

   A. they offer their help   B. they receive others' help

    C. they feel others' kindness   D. they show their weakness

2. The author feels sad sometimes because      .

   A. he has a soft heart

   B. he relies much on others

   C. some people pretend to be kind

   D. some people fail to see the kindness in others

3. What did the other drivers do when they saw the flashlights?

   A. They speeded up to pass.

   B. They waited with patience.

   C. They tried their best to help.

   D. They put on their flashlights too.

4. In this passage, the author advises us to

   A. handle problems by ourselves   B. accept help from others

   C. admit our weakness   D. show our bravery

5. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

   A. A wheelchair experience

   B. Weakness and kindness
