"I'm sorry 7 ( get) you out of bed so early, doctor," he began. "But I 8 (have) a very serious accident during the night. I came back to London this morning, and at Paddinton I asked the railway people where I could find 9 doctor. One good fellow very kindly brought me here. I gave your servant a card,10 I see that she has left it over there on the side table."

Reading Strategies Have you ever read what should be a useful document, yet failed to gain any helpful information from it? Or,do you have to reread something several times to get a full understanding of the content?
The following approaches will help you get the maximum benefit from your reading, with the minimum effort.
1. Think about What You Want to Know 1 Are you reading with a purpose,or just for pleasure? What do you want to know after you've read it?
Once you know your purpose, you can examine the resource to see whether it's going to help you.
2. Know How Deeply to Study the Material Where you only need the shallowest knowledge of a subject, you can skim the material. Here you read only chapter headings, introductions, and summaries.
If you need a moderate level of information on a subject, then you can scan the text. You can then speed read the contents of the chapters, picking out and understanding key words and concepts. 2
3. Read Actively When you're reading a document or book in detail,it helps if you practice "active reading" by highlighting and underlining key information, and taking notes as you progress. 3
4. Know How to Study Different Types of Material Different types of documents hold information in different places and in different ways, and they have different depth and breadth of coverage.
The most effective way of getting information from magazines is to scan the tables of contents or indexes and turn directly to interesting articles. Newspapers tend to be arranged in sections. 4
5. Make Your Own Table of Contents 5 This means that you may not notice when important information has been left out,or that an irrelevant detail has been included.
An effective way to combat this is to make up your own table of contents before you start reading. Ask yourself what sections or topics you are expecting to see in this document, and what questions you want to have answered by the end of the text.
A. This is when you read the chapter introductions and summaries in detail.
B. Before you start reading anything, ask yourself why you're reading it.
C. Most of us read regularly as part of our jobs, and to develop our skills and knowledge.
D. This enphasizes information in your mind, and helps you to review inportant points later.
E. Only when you need full knowledge of a subject is it worth studying the text in detail.
F. When you're reading a document or book,it's easy to accept the writer's structure of thought.
G. If you read a paper often, you can quickly learn which sections are useful, and which ones you can skip altogether.

Recently a restaurant has become a hot topic which arouses a controversial debate. A man
runs a restaurant 1 any waiter and people who have dinner here can pay the bill as they want 2 If the customer thinks this meal worth 50yuan,then he can put 50yuan in the box. However,as the owner keeps losing money over 4 months, people begin to think this is the customer's honesty issue,3 I can't agree with it.
In the first place, the restaurant didn't name the price to each dish, which means the owner lets the customers evaluate the meal by themselves. So people pay the money for the meal that is always 4 than the owner's expectation. Leave alone the 5 (one) who don't pay the bill,as everyone has different values, and most people have no idea about the cost of the dish,it is understandable 6 customers pay less money than the cost.
In the second place, the restaurant has no waiter at all which makes the cost lower than a regular restaurant. The customers have to help themselves to have the meal, also they need to wash the dishes. It makes 7 reasonable that customers pay less money than the owner's 8 (expect) .
To sum up,this may not be the problem of 9 (honest) ,but the way of 10 (run) a restaurant. I believe most people pay their bills, but they just pay it lower than the cost.

Last Sunday I saw the worse storm in years. It came down suddenly but went on for more than three hours. After the lunch,I went into my room have a rest. The air was hot and all were quiet. Then a strong wind started blowing into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew highly into the air and some flew out of the opened window. As I ran out to catch it,big drops of rain began to fall. Then I heard a loud crashing sound from the back of the home. I ran out of my room to find out that a big tree had fallen down and broke the top of the backroom.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so,however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here's how:
Plan your time carefully. 1 After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2 Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or televisions. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. 3 Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learnt about a subject. 4 The world won't end if you don't pass a test,so don't be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your study. 5
A. Find a good place to study.
B. Adapt to new learning methods.
C. Really listening in class means less work later.
D. They help you remember your new knowledge.
E. Go over the notes when you get home from school.

Do you read reviews after you see a movie? I use to do that, but I usually regretted. I read so much about a movie on advance that I often ended up not go to see it at all. The writers point out everything that is wrong with the film, but seldom mentions anything good about one. They also tell many things and even the ending of the movie. Lately I have changed way I choose movies to watch. I read reviews afterwards if necessary. What is very importance to me is that I don't watch the talk shows in that people discuss movies. And I don't ask other people how they like of it. Now,I enjoy myself even more.
