Many of us don't pay much attention to the importance of eye care. It is said that if you take care of your body, then you can surely be healthy. That is why our eyes should be given a lot of care. Natural eye care should be put in a number one place.
There are several causes leading to poor eyesight like not enough food, genes (基因) and aging (老化). Televisions, computers and reading are also the causes of having poor eyesight. If you happen to work in front of the computer, it is best to take a break every once in a while. Something dirty can cause redness and they will make you feel uncomfortable. It is bad for your eyes, too. If this happens, the best way is to clean your eyes by using cold water. You must also try your best to protect your eyes from harmful things. For example, sunglasses are not just for fashion but they can also serve as a great way to protect your eyesight form UV rays.
Eating healthy foods will do good to your eyesight. Remember that vitamins A, C and E are good for eyes. Try to eat food groups that have these vitamins. And you should do eye exercises because exercise protects your eyesight, too. If a person exercises regularly (定期地) and eats the right kind of food, his eyes will stay in good condition for a long time.

Europe’s deadly outbreak of a rare form of E. coli bacteria (大腸桿菌) has brought new attention to food safety issues. One of the problems when people get sick from food is that the simplest question is often difficult or even impossible to answer. Just what did the people eat that made them sick?
Of course, one way to avoid these medical mysteries is to keep dangerous organisms out of the food supply. This is easier said than done, but scientists keep looking for new ways.
Scientists in the United States have developed an experimental system that uses a high-tech optical scanner. The system is designed to identify the presence of contaminants(致污物) like soil or animal waste on fresh produce. These can be sources of E. coli. E. coli bacteria naturally live in the intestines(腸) of humans and many animals. Most kinds of E. coli are harmless but some can make people sick.
The new scanner can also show damage and imperfections that might make the produce unappealing to shoppers.
Scientists designed the system at a Department of Agriculture research center in Beltsville, Maryland. Moon Kim of the Agricultural Research Service led the team.
MOON KIM: “We were requested, we were asked, to develop a method to detect contamination in produce. So we started with the apple as the model sample.”
The scanner uses a high-speed camera placed over the conveyer belt that moves the produce along. As the apples move along the belt, the scanner captures images of each piece of fruit.
Moon Kim says the team hopes the system will be available before long.
MOON KIM: “We are targeting for development in commercial plants for the next several years.”
The scanner can direct a sorting machine to separate the bad apples from the good ones. The system is currently able to show the surface of only half the apple as it speeds by. The inventers hope to improve the process so it can show the whole surface.

B.make the produce appeal to shoppers
C.can only capture images of the whole apple
D.can identify the presence of contaminants
小題4:What can be inferred from the text?
A.The scanner needs to be improved.
B.The scanner will be available in the next several years.
C.Moon Kim is unwilling to develop the scanner.
D.The scanner is connected to a sorting machine.

Internet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to a research at Carnegie Mellon University.
Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression(沮喪) and loneliness than those who used Internet less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feeling.
Researchers are puzzled by the results, which were completely the opposite to their experiences. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose the information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may explain the drop in well-being, researchers supposed. Faceless, bodiless “virtual” communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that knowing the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology; it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study founders. “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications(應(yīng)用) and services for technology.”

A.People could choose their information through Internet.
B.They had expected the opposite results.
C.People can communicate with others.
D.They had thought Internet was much healthier.
小題3:Which of the following may be the cause of depression?
A.Net users found their living conditions bad.
B.Net users already had mental problems.
C.Deep relationships were formed through Internet.
D.Net users had less time to communicate with other people.

People who smoke could lose around one third of their daily memory, researchers say.
A study by a team at Northumbria University showed that smokers lost more of their memory when compared to non-smokers.
And the research also found that those who kicked the habit saw their ability to recollect information restored to almost the same level as non-smokers.
The study involved more than seventy 18-to-25-year-olds and included a tour of the university’s campus. Those who took part were asked to recall small details, such as a list of songs played at a campus concert and tasks completed at various points-known as real world memory test. Smokers performed badly, remembering just 59 percent of tasks. But those who had given up smoking remembered 74 percent and those who had never smoked recalled 81 percent of tasks.
Dr. Tom Heffernan, who leads Northumbria University’s Collaboration for Drug and Alcohol Research Group, said the findings would be useful in anti-smoking campaigns. He said, “Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the United States, it's important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive(認(rèn)知的)function-of which prospective memory is an excellent example. ”
“This is the first time that a study has set out to examine whether giving up smoking has an impact on memory. We already know that giving up smoking has huge health benefits for the body, but this study also shows how stopping smoking can have knock-on benefits for cognitive functions too. ’’
The research will now investigate the effects of passive smoking on memory, while Dr. Heffernan and Dr. Terence O’Neil will look into the effects of third-hand smoking-toxins left on curtains and furniture.
小題1:What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Smoking does harm to health.
B.Smokers take a tour to the University’s campus.
C.Smoking can affect one’s memory.
D.Smokers are compared to non-smokers.
小題2:How did those who took part in the study perform when asked to recall small details?
A.Smokers did the worst among the participants.
B.Non-smokers could recall about half of them.
C.Smokers could recall nothing at all.
D.Those who gave up smoking did best.
小題3:According to Dr. Tom Heffernan, the findings_______.
A.would be really a surprise to the public
B.would contribute to fighting against smoking
C.would be used in real world memory test
D.would be nothing new to the researchers
小題4:What does the underlined word “impact’’ most probably mean?
A.orderB.impressionC.expression D.effect
小題5:What will Dr. Heffernan and Dr Terence O’Neil do?
A.Investigate the effects of third-hand smoking.
B.Do research on how smoking affects passive smokers.
C.Find ways to persuade people to quit smoking.
D.Study whether giving up smoking affects memory.

How many times have you got upset because someone wasn't doing his job, because your child isn't behaving? How many times have you been irritated (惱怒的) when you've planned something carefully and things didn't go as you'd hoped?
This kind of anger and irritation happens to all of us—it’s part of the human experiences.
One thing that irritates me is when people talk during a movie,or cut me off in traffic. Actually, I have a lot of these little annoyances—don't we all?And it isn’t always easy to find peace when you’ve become upset or irritated.
Let me tell you a little secret to finding peace of mind: see the glass as already broken .
See, the cause of our stress, anger and irritation is that things don't go the way we like, the way we expect them to. Think of how many times this has been true for you. And so the solution is simple:expect things to go wrong, expect things to be different than we hoped or planned, expect the unexpected to happen. And accept it.
One quick example: on our recent trip to Japan, I told my kids to expect things to go wrong—they always do on a trip. I told them, “See it as part of the adventure.”
And this worked like a charm. When we inevitably(不可避免地) took the wrong train on a foreignlanguage subway system, or when it rained on the day we went to Disney Sea, or when we took three trains and walked 10 blocks only to find the National Children's Castle closed on Mondays...they said, “It's part of the adventure!” And it was all OK—we didn't get too bothered.
So when the nice glass you bought inevitably falls and breaks some day, you might get upset. But things will be different, if you see the glass as already broken, from the day you get it. You know it'll break some day, so from the beginning, see it as already broken. Be a timetraveler, or someone with timetraveling vision, and see the future of this glass, from this moment until it inevitably breaks. And when it breaks, you won't be upset or sad—because it was already broken, from the day you got it. And you’ll realize that every moment you have with it is precious.
小題1:The author would probably agree that________.
A.we should control our anger and irritation

B.a(chǎn)dvise us how to find peace of mind
C.tell us a happy trip he took with his children

小題3:By the underlined part (in Para.3), the author tells us to________.
A.get ready for the worst result of things
B.enjoy the process of things
C.expect little from life
D.find the relationship between cause and effect
小題4:The author’s children could enjoy their trip to Japan because________.
A.everything went smoothly
B.they had a lot of adventures
C.they had expected things to go wrong
D.they could soon get used to the customs there
小題5:We can learn from the passage that the author________.
A.often gets angry in his life
B.can adjust his state of mind accordingly

It doesn’t matter when and how much a person sleeps , but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought , until they heard about Herpin. Herpin, it was said , never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange man themselves.
Herpin was 90 years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw him sleeping. In fact, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Herpin sometimes got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. Office workers should know that long periods of sitting at your desk may be a killer. Scientists have shown a new threat from this lifestyle that they call  “muscular inactivity (肌肉遲鈍)”.
Sitting still for long periods of time leads to the buildup of substances (物質(zhì)) in the blood that are harmful to health. And exercise alone won’t drive them away.
Millions of people spend their days between car, office desk and the sofa in front of the TV. While the bad influences are well rocognized,it has been thought that they can be changed by regular trips to the gym or swimming pool.
Now researchers say that is not enough. In addition to regular exercise, office workers need to keep moving while they work,by making regular trips to the printer, coffee machine or to chat with workmates.
Elin EkblomBak,an expert on health, says research shows long periods of sitting and lack (缺乏)  of “whole body muscular movement”  are strongly linked to obesity, heart disease and cancer, and a higher risk of death, regardless of (不管) whether they take enough exercise.
“Everyone knows about the health benefits of regular exercise. But what we haven’t realized before is that longperiod sitting down carries an extra risk that cannot be dealt with by taking exercise,” Dr EkblomBak said, adding that sitting still should be recognized as a risk to health.
“It is important to have a fiveminute break from desk work every 45 minutes. Don’t email workmates—walk across the office to give them the message. Take a coffee break or put the printer in the next room. I am a desk worker and I try to do it. It is not difficult but sometimes you get lost in your work and you forget about it.”
However, more studies are needed to confirm the ill effects of sitting for too long and ways of fighting them. But at present they conclude that  “keep moving”  should be added to the advice to “keep exercising.”
小題1:Nowadays,many office workers wrongly think that________.
A.long periods of sitting has bad influences on them
B.regular exercise benefits them after long periods of sitting
C.they are living a lifestyle called “muscular inactivity”
D.it’s unfair for them to sit in the office for too long
小題2:What does the author suggest office workers should do?
A.Chat with workmates often.
B.Send emails instead of chatting.
C.Keep moving in the office regularly.
D.Take more exercise after work.
小題3:The last paragraph suggests that the result of the study is________.
A.scientific B.uncertainC.unbelievableD.convincing
小題4:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A new threat :longperiod sitting
B.Office workers should keep exercising
C.Taking exercise benefits a lot
