"Raleigh has a welleducated workforce and an impressive supply of highlevel jobs,not to mention its low unemployment rate and its impressive array (大批量) of big houses," he added in a statement.

Washington came second in the survey,followed by Minneapolis-St. Paul,Bridgeport-Stamford in Connecticut and Salt Lake City.

Bakersfield and Fresno in California came in at the very bottom of the list because their high poverty rate and low scores in the major categories.

"Bakersfield has the highest poverty rate of any major market,as well as the lightest con?centration of management and professional jobs,weakest inventory (存量) of big houses,and smallest percentages in the three educational categories that track (追蹤) adults with high school diplomas,bachelor's degrees and advanced degrees," Thomas explained.

New Orleans and Memphis also scored low in the poll,while Denver came in at No. 6,followed by Seattle,Boston,Austin and San Jose,which rounded out the top 10.

Washington   D. C had the highest percentage of the population with management and profes?sional jobs. But Omaha had the shortest commuting (通勤) times to work,with an average of 19. 3 minutes,while New York City had the longest with 34. 5 minutes.

  Increasing numbers of Taiwanese students are joining the island's " China rush",seeking education on the Chinese mainland.

According to official Chinese figures,the number of Taiwanese students admitted into col?

lege and postgraduate (研究生) programs on the mainland totaled 461 in 1996,928 in 1997 and 839 in 1998. Although no latest official numbers were available,Netbig. com said this number had risen between 30 to 50 percent annually in the past two years with well over 1000 entering mainland campuses last year.

Chang plans to go on to get a master's degree in business admin?istration in Shanghai,which she says offers the best environment for such studies.

A journalism graduate student,surnamed Lin,at the National Taiwan University said he would like to study law on the Chinese mainland since " there will be better career prospects now that more Taiwanese companies are going there". "Some business executives are sending their children to study in the Chinese mainland. They hope the children could build up connections which could later become useful in their business operations," said Yang Chingyao,professor of the Chinese mainland studies. A Netbig. com survey showed the campuses favored by Taiwan students included Beijing,Qinghua and Renmin universities in Beijing,and Jinan and Zhong shan universities in Guangzhou. The most popular studies were law,business and Chinese medi?cine.

Like many lovers of books,Mary and her husband,Richard Goldman,seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.

When Mary was hospitalized with heart trouble in 1989,they decided it was time to get se?rious. Richard,who worked for a business company,was eager to work for himself,and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job.
