Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame(責備) the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation(一代人)) of grown-ups who don’t often cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will probably choose sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
小題1:According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
A.Those who often take exercise.
B.Those who often watch television
C.Those who often have meals at home.
D.Those who often walk to school.
小題2:The author thinks that children are becoming overweight because _______.
A.their parents often cook meals for them.
B.they are too busy to go out and play.
C.they can't choose what to eat.
D.there are too many fast food shops around.
小題3:The underlined word "steering" in the last sentence most probably means ____.
A.forcingB.guidingC.drivingD.moving
小題4:According to the author, which of the following is WRONG?
A.We should encourage children to be more active.
B.Children ought to keep away from fast food shops.
C.Parents needn't cook meals for their children.
D.Parents should help their children form a good eating habit.
小題5:The main purpose of the text is to _______.
A.tell a storyB.provide factsC.give adviceD.compare opinions

When they get home, they sit in front of the television --- --- it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food.可知,經(jīng)?措娨暤娜丝赡艹缘牟唤】档氖称犯。所以答案選B。
小題2:D細節(jié)理解題。 根據(jù)第二段最后一句If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.如果這種餐館少一些,那孩子們買方便食品的機會就更少。所以作者認為孩子超重的原因是快餐店太多了。所以答案選D。
小題3:B 猜測詞義題。根據(jù)steering所在的句子therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.作者想說,我們應該鼓勵年輕人更積極起來,也要“steer”他們遠離快餐店和一些不好的飲食習慣。所以可以猜測“steer”是指guide“指導,引導”。答案選B。
小題4:C判斷正誤題。 根據(jù)最后一段最后一個句子therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active,說明A項正確。根據(jù)句子 --- away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.說明B項和D項正確。C項說父母不應該給孩子們做飯,此項不正確。所以答案選C。
小題5:B 寫作意圖題。作者一開始就提出Many facts suggest that children are overweight---并分析了孩子們變胖的三個主要原因,這些原因是通過列舉身邊的事實來分析的。所以這篇文章的主要目的是提供事實,答案選B。

It happened to me recently, I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I wsa talking to agreed with me that it was,in his words,”a brilliantly written book”.However,he then went on to talk about Mr.Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his back-ground at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't.  In the World Book Day's" Report on Guilty Secrets" ,Dreams From My Father is at number 9.  The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to Lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out) , I'll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten.  But I am pleased to say that,  un- like 42 percent of peoples I have read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984.  I think
it's really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie  about having read Jane Austen,  Charles Dickens ,  Fyodor Dostoevsky  (I haven ' tread him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why  they lied, the most common reason was to "impress" someone they were speaking to.  This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth !
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella ( ah,  the big sellers, in other words).  Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I' lI come clean: I do thi8 and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).
小題1:Which of the fokllowing is a "guilty secret" according io the world Book Day report?

D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
小題2:How did the author find his friend a book liar?

What is Home stay? Literally it is a home for you to stay at when you are not at home. To be specific, home stay provides foreign language students with the opportunity to speak native language outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home. Here is what you will experience in our British Home-stay Program.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town centre (Zone 1) as much of central London is commercial and not residential(居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer smaller accommodation in a more crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by underground.
Meal Plans Available
? Continental Breakfast
? Breakfast and Dinner
? Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物類食品), bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.

Everybody is afraid of something. That’s what more than 1,700 kids told us when we asked them about fears and scary stuff. We gave kids a list of 14 scary things and asked which one frightened them most. Here are the top 5 answers from our survey (調查):① Scary movies and TV shows;②Scary dreams;③Thunderstorms,hurricanes(颶風);and other horrible weather;④War and terrorism (恐怖行動);⑤Sounds heard at night.
But not everyone is afraid of the same thing. And what makes one person scared can be of no big deal for someone else.Plenty of kids said their biggest fear wasn’t on our list.
What is fear?
Fear is a feeling that eyeryone has—it’s programmed into all of us—and that’s a good thing because fear is there to protect us.We’re born with a sense of fear so we can react to something that could be dangerous. The baby cries, and their mom comes over to comfort him or her, helping the baby feel safe and OK again.Real vs.Pretend
The best way to get over a fear is to get more information about it.As kids get older, they understand more and start seeing the difference between what is real and unreal. So when William’s imagination leads him to think of witches,he can tell himself,“Wait a minute. They’re only pretend things.I don’t need to worry about them.”
The same goes for the dark.A kid’s imagination can start playing tricks when the lights go out. What’s under my bed?Is that a thief I hear? With the help of a parent, kids can get more comfortable in the dark.Using a nightlight or shining a flashlight under the bed to see that there’s nothing there can help kids fight that fear.

“ Yeah! Auntie is here! “ screamed my husband’s niece and nephew together. “ Let me get the door!” “ No, let me !” Each one’s goal was to get there first and open the door for their Auntie, Me!
I couldn’t get enough of them, of their youthful love of life, and their excitement every time I visited! To be honest, it was partially because of the Surprise Travel Bag that I carried in. It was a tradition that I started when they were young. Each time I went to see them, I would take a large bag filled with toys, coloring books, candy, magic markers and “games”.
The contents(內容) were different but the rules were not. They included: one may get a turn to choose what activity we would do; another may take a turn to go first when we played a game; ..... We shared the treats after the games and cleaned up after we played . Then, sadly, they watched the Surprise Travel Bag go away with their Auntie.
Now my niece and nephew have grown into young adults. They spend most of their visits listening to their iPods, messaging on their phones.... I completely forgot that I had put my two Surprise Travel Bags in the basement(地下室) until my husband found them this weekend.
I held the bags tightly in my arms, remembering our laughter and fun-filled get-togethers. My big decision now is to whom I will pass the Surprise Travel Bags so that the fun that the bags help to create can continue.

D.Because she doesn’t like the children any longer.
小題5:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Surprise Travel BagsB.How to Play with Children

Cut off from society

You're on your way to school as usual when suddenly an invisible barrier appears out of nowhere, trapping you underneath it and isolating you from the outside world. What do you do?
This is the scary experience the residents of a fictional town called Chester’s Mill are going through in the US TV series Under the Dome. Based on famous US author Stephen King’s 2009 best-selling novel, the show has become “the highest-rated summer show in 21 years” since debuting (首播) on June 24, reported the New York Post.
The series begins with the dome (穹頂) making its alarming appearance. As the earth trembles and birds take off, an enormous, invisible barrier slices down, cutting the town off from the rest of the world.
The residents quickly realize they are trapped, probably for quite some time. Families are separated, emergency services are unreachable and water, food and fuel are strictly limited.
There is no way out or in. But who or what is responsible? Nobody knows. Thus, the residents are at the mercy of unknown forces and their internal conflicts.
While it provides an enjoyable TV thrill ride, the movie’s science fiction is closely linked with reality.
“Not only is it worrying, suspenseful (懸疑的) and full of splendid special effects, but it has big thoughts about environmentalism and the future of the commented The Denver Post planet,”
As King himself explained to The Telegraph: “The dome is a microcosm (微觀世界) of life. We all live under the dome. We live on this little blue planet and so far as we know that’s all we’ve got,” he said. “The resources that we’ve got are the resources that we’ve got; they’re limited.”
But the show explores many themes in addition to environmental destruction. It also shows “how quickly the social order we take for granted can disappear when people are isolated and afraid”, said the Los Angeles Times.
It is “a science-fiction social study”, said The Washington Post. “Once the people of Chester’s Mill realize they are indefinitely trapped without means of food supply, outside communication and power, their polite sense of small-town, American civilization begins to fall apart.”
小題1:The underlined word “isolating” in the first paragraph probably means _______.
A.separatingB.protecting
C.discouragingD.distinguishing
小題2:In the TV series Under the Dome, _______.
A.the dome, which appears out of nowhere, doesn’t have huge effects on the residents’ lives
B.it takes a long time for residents to realize they are trapped by the invisible dome
C.because of the dome, the residents in the small town become more united and helpful D.not knowing what has D.happened, the residents feel helpless against unknown forces
小題3:Why is the TV series closely linked with reality according to the article?
A.Because it is suspenseful and uses splendid special effects to reflect modern life.
B.Because it gets us to think about the future of the earth and the importance of environmental protection.
C.Because it attaches great importance to following the social order even in frightening situations.
D.Because the residents in the TV series live almost the same life as ordinary Americans do.

Among rich countries, people in the United States work the longest hours. They work much longer than in Europe. This difference is quite surprising because productivity(生產(chǎn)力) per hour worked is the same in the United States as it is in France, Spain and Germany, and it is growing at a similar speed.
In most countries and at most times in history, as people have become richer they have chosen to work less. In other words they have decided to “spend” a part of their extra income on a fuller personal life. Over the last fifty years Europeans have continued this pattern, and hours of work have fallen sharply. But not in the United States. We do not fully know why this is. One reason may be greatly lower taxes in America, which increase the rewards to work. Another may be more satisfying work, or less satisfying personal lives.
Longer hours do of course increase the GDP(國內生產(chǎn)總值). So the United States has produced more per worker than, say, France. The United States also has more of its people at work, while in France many more mothers and older workers have decided to stay at home. The overall result is that American GDP per head is 40% higher than in France, even though productivity per hour worked is the same.
It is not clear which of the two situations is better. As we have seen, work has to be compared with other values like family life, which often get lost in its interest. It is too early to explain the different trends(趨勢)in happiness over time in different countries. But it is a disappointing idea that in the United States happiness has made no progress since 1975, while it has risen in Europe. Could this have anything to do with trends in the work-life balance?
小題1:Which of the following countries has more of its people at work?
A.Spain.B.France.C.Germany.D.America.
小題2:What message can we get from the text?
A.The GDP of Europe is higher than that of America.
B.Two possible reasons are given for working longer hours in the US.
C.People all over the world choose to work less when they are richer.
D.Americans are happier than Europeans.
小題3:Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Americans and Europeans
B.Staying at Home
C.Work and Productivity
D.Work and Happiness
