Last Sunday, I didn’t get up early as usually. In the morning after I finished my homework, I do some washing. Then I telephoned one of my classmates, invite him to see a film. And unfortunately, when we got to the cinema, we found all the tickets had sold out. Then we went back to school and played the football. After that, we were about to go home then we saw our English teacher, Ms Gao, coming into the school gate. She told us we had made great progresses in English. This term she suggested that we should read more and wrote more. She also asked us to help those on need. She hoped we would improve English together.

There is no doubt that for a long time college education has been accepted. All high school graduates ought to go, says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence, because college will help them earn more money, become “better” people, and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don’t go.

But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone. And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending, those who don’t fit the pattern are becoming more numerous, and more obvious. College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis; college students interfere(妨礙;干擾) with each other’s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the fierce competition so as to get admitted into graduate schools. Others find no stimulation (激勵) in their studies, and consequently have to drop out, which is often encouraged by college administrators.

Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves--they are spoiled and they are expecting too much. But that’s a condemnation(指責(zé)) of the students as a whole, and doesn’t explain all campus unhappiness. Others blame the state of the world, and they are partly right. We have been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can’t absorb an army of untrained eighteen-year-olds. But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty-two-year-olds,either.

1.What’s the main idea of the first paragraph, ___________________.

A. people have great expectations for college education.

B. people still have a low opinion of college education.

C. the author thinks youngsters should all go to college.

D. people now no longer challenge college education.

2.The reason why more young people drop out of college is that _________.

A. they can start selling shoes and driving taxis.

B. they are no longer motivated in their studies.

C. they compete for admission to graduate schools.

D. college administrators force them to do so.

3.Who contributes to campus unhappiness?

A. young students who are all spoiled and expecting too much.

B. our society that can’t offer enough jobs to college graduates.

C. young people as well as our society are to blame for all this.

D. our society that has not enough jobs for high school graduates.

Directions:Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

Death is a serious theme worthy of great poets. For example, John Keats’s ‘When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be’ and John Donne’s ‘Death, Be Not Proud’ both discuss death in reflective ways. However, the imagery(意象) in these poems shows that while Keats believes that death can only destroy, Donne believes that death can be overcome.
Keats is afraid of death, because to him death means the loss of those things that make his life worth living: ‘On the shore/ of the wide world I stand alone, and think/ Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.’ Earlier in the poem, Keats says that he hopes this ‘Love’ will be a ‘high romance’ with a ‘fair creature.’ He also says that he hopes the ‘Fame’ he seeks will be the result of the ‘high piled books’ produced by his ‘crowded brain.’ In other words, Keats’s fear is that death is a ‘nothingness’ that will arrive before he can finish his life’s work or find his true love.
Donne has a different attitude toward death, and so the imagery in his poem is different, too.To Donne, death should ‘be not proud,’ because it is not ‘mighty and dreadful.’ Unlike Keats, Donne sees death as weak and merely a ‘slave to Fate, chance, kings, and desperate men.’ He also says that death is like ‘rest and sleep’.Donne believes that we will all wake from the sleep of death to everlasting life, just as we wake from our normal sleep to our everyday lives. In fact, Donne believes that it is death itself that will die: ‘One short sleep past, we wake forever,/ And Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.’
Keats and Donne both know that death is a prat of life, and both poets use powerful imagery to talk about that difficult theme. The differences in this imagery show two very different attitudes toward the subject, one of which is much more positive than the other.Which poet to believe is up to the reader to decide.
Not surprisingly, the readers’ own experiences may play a part in the way they respond to these poets’ approaches.Like the two poets and their beliefs, contemporary readers also may be divided on the subject. This may explain why Keats’s and Donne’s poetry remains fascinating years after their won deaths.
1.According to the passage, ________ makes Keats’s life worth living.
A. expressing his grand passion for poetry
B. walking on the shore with a pretty lady
C. defeating nothingness with his true love
D. pursuing the fame of being a romantic poet
2.In Donne’s poems he believes that death is ________ .
A. generally powerful and terrible
B. only a ceaseless sleep
C. merely the loss of work and love
D. hardly worth the fear
3.Contemporary readers may view the two poets’ serious subject differently because ________.
A. they are attracted to the two poets’ everlasting opposite beliefs
B. they are divided naturally by their positive or negative personalities
C. their own life experiences affect the understandings of the poems
D. their preferences for the poets’ strong imageries are various
4.Which of the following best describes the main writing style of the passage?
A. Analysis.
B. Argument.
C. Comparison.
D. Reasoning.

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆福建省高三上學(xué)期第三次月考英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

There are probably no people on Earth who like to gossip as much as the British. If prying into(打探) other’s lives were an Olympic sport, then Team GB would surely take the gold medal.

And when the British can’t watch the lives of real people, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on—the soap opera. British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular, Coronation Street and East-enders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week, so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street.

The most obvious difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour (魅力), the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs. Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience—but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.

Because these soap operas last for decades, the cast is ever changing. The shows rarely focus on one or two main characters. Like the real world, people come and go all the time. However, there are exceptions. Coronation Street’s William Roach, 76, has played the role of Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the show in 1960, and he is still a regular.

The choice of which soap opera you follow is often cultural: People from the north of British tend to watch Coronation Street as it is set in Manchester. People from the south generally prefer East-enders, which is set in the east of London. The show is generally considered grittier and is aimed at a younger audience.

1.What is the main difference between American dramas and British soap operas?

A. American dramas are longer.

B. British soap operas are longer.

C. American dramas deal with dangerous things.

D. British soap operas deal with real people.

2.Why do British people like to watch such operas?

A. They can find their own life from the operas.

B. They can enjoy the operas in their free time.

C. They can watch the operas for many years.

D. They care about the fate of the characters in the operas.

3.The underlined world “episodes” in the 2nd paragraph probably means ______.

A. plays

B. pages

C. issues

D. parts

4.One characteristic of British operas is that ______.

A. the characters play the same role for a long time.

B. the characters in the play often change

C. people don’t know what will happen next

D. there is only one or two characters in them
