I had been playing hockey(冰球)for about 10 years. I was always the one sitting at the end of the bench, and got into a game. I went to all the and showed up even when it was so that your ‘breath froze’ and when the other players had decided to stay home. I felt I had enough and thought of quitting.
I finally decided to the news to my mom that I was leaving the team. My mom may have looked like a tiny and quiet lady but on my words, she said, “Remember, ‘A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.’ Your mother didn’t raise , so think about yourself in a way and see yourself as a winner!” So I worked harder than ever at getting in better shape, my shot(投球) accuracy and changing my .
Once in a match, we our first game badly. What’s worse, one of our best players got hurt. I was sitting at my place, at the end of the bench, when the coach came over and told me I was going . I was nervous, excited and terrified all at the same time.
The opposing team was fast and I had to admit I was a little . But my mom’s words out in my head like a church bell. Instead of being afraid, I was “pumped” and I very quickly found that all my work was paying off. I was as fast a skater as anyone else on the ice, and I seemed to get the to score. The crowd went quiet. All the time I spent on the ice when everyone had
gone home had me for this moment.
Won! I won!
The lesson I learned from my mom’s has stayed with me over the years. I hear them whenever I am faced with a challenge, or whenever I myself.

Dear Mr. Black,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I had been studying in your school for a year. I am deep moved by the kindness of people around. What I want to say first is that the teachers here are very friendly. They do what they can help me and encourage me to study hard. Whenever asking, they give satisfactory answers. Beside, my classmates offer me a lot of help, either. We get on well to each other and I have made quite a few good friend. At home, Walter’s parents take good care of me, treating to me as if I were their own child.
I’m so grateful to all these people, with their help I have been accustomed to American culture and gained a lot of knowledge.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆河南安陽一中高二下期第二次階段測試英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
I suppose that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. And especially if it’s given from the heart. When people are talking, there’s no need to do anything but receive them. Listen to what they’re saying. Care about it. Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it. Most of us don’t value ourselves or our love enough to know this. It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of simple saying “I’m so sorry,” when someone is in pain.
One of my patients told me that when she tried to tell her story people often interrupted to tell her that they once had something just like that happening to them. Her pain became a story about them. Eventually, she stopped talking to most people. We connect through listening. When we interrupt what someone is saying to let them know that we understand, we move the focus of attention to ourselves. When we listen, they know we care.
I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening. In the old days I used to reach for the handkerchiefs, until I realized that passing a person a handkerchief may be just another way to shut him down, to take them out of their experience of sadness. Now I just listen. When they have cried all they need to cry, they find me there with them.
This simple thing has not been that easy to learn. It certainly went against everything I had been taught since I was very young. I thought people listened only because they were too shy to speak or did not know the answer. But now I know that a loving silence often has far more power to heal than the kindest words.
1.What does the author value most in the communication with each other?
A.Deep understanding B.Saying “I’m Sorry”.
C.Attention from heart. D.Doing nothing.
2.The woman patient stopped telling her story to most people because ______.
A.She didn’t get enough respect from others
B.she was discouraged by being often interrupted
C.people often told her their own opinions
D.people couldn’t understand her sad situation
3. If you hand a handkerchief to someone crying, you may ______.
A.hurt his feelings B.make him embarrassed
C.encourage him to continue to cry D.stop him from letting out his sorrow
4. It can be inferred from the passage that while communicating, ______.
A.listening is a perfect way to respond to others
B.people keep silent because they don’t know the answer
C.keeping silent means being too shy to speak
D.it is easy to form the habit of listening silently
