Once a baby cries, the parents will go to see what happened as soon as possible. According to a new study, a baby’s cry can make adults react very quickly, even if they are not related(相關(guān)的).
Oxford University researchers used a game called Whack-a-mole for the study. The game needs people to hit one buttons(按鈕). The players must react as quickly as they can to hit the button that lights up at random(隨機(jī)的). It is a game that requires speed and accuracy(準(zhǔn)確度).
The study included 40 men and women volunteers aged 19 to 59. Some of them had sons or daughters but none had a baby at the time. They played whack-a-mole after listening to different sounds, including babies’ crying, the crying of adults in trouble and birds’ song that sounds like babies’ crying.
The volunteer’ scores were higher after listening to the sound of crying babies. Men and women had similar scores. The results showed that a crying baby gets special attention.
“Few sounds make people react quite like the cry of a baby,” said Morten Kringelbach of Oxford’s psychiatry department, who led the study.
He added that a baby’s cry can increase adults’ heart rate and blood pressure. This is understandable, because in the course of human evolution(進(jìn)化), taking care of babies has always been an important job for adults. When a baby is hungry or feeling bored or unwell, it will cry. As a result, human brains and bodies develop a special reaction to a baby’s cry.
【小題1】According to the passage, how many volunteers took part in the study?
A.80 | B.40 | C.19 | D.59 |
A.表演 | B.打擊 | C.反應(yīng) | D.演示 |
A.a(chǎn) baby’s cry can get special attention from adults |
B.men and women have different reaction speed and accuracy |
C.a(chǎn)dults without babies react more quickly to a baby’s cry |
D.women react to a baby’s cry more quickly than men |
A.can get the same attention from adults as the birds’ song |
B.is the noisiest sound |
C.can increase adults’ heart rate and blood pressure |
D.is good for its health |
A.taking care of the younger babies was the most important thing in the past |
B.human brains and bodies have developed to take care of babies |
C.baby cries are a good way make adults react quickly |
D.baby cries have developed a lot during the course of human evolution |

Most students think my reasons for this rule include negative experiences in the past when students made wrong use of technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. I’ve seldom had students make wrong use of technology in my classes; however, I have been e-mailed by students while they were in other teachers’ classrooms.
Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth in that at all. As I noted above, I love technology and try to keep up with it.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations. Interruptions (中斷) by technology often break students’ thoughts and make them depend too much on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep in themselves for ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I have been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations (評(píng)價(jià)) show student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize with deep conversation and difficult tasks, they learn at a deeper level – a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I am not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I will continue my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.
1.The writer’s rule for his History Matters class is ____.
A. discussing historical ideas deeply
B. studying and discussing the materials
C. leaving technology out of the classroom
D. making right use of technology in class
2.The word “negative” in Paragraph 3 means ____.
A. similar B. unforgettable C. special D. unpleasant
3.What can we know from the passage?
A. Students make right use of technology in other teachers’ classes.
B. The classroom is one of the good places to have deep conversations.
C. The writer encourages students to agree with others after discussion.
D. Students are unhappy with the writer’s way of teaching history.
4.The writer wants to tell us that ____.
A. technology has different influences in different classes in college
B. technology makes it difficult to have true communication in class
C. history classes can help students to develop their deep thinking
D. it is time for him to give up his teaching method in history class
