Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US president Barack Obama’s “back to school” speech. Here is an excerpt(摘錄) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饒舌音樂(lè)) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots (投籃) during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit(承認(rèn)) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged (泄氣), and you feel like other people have given up on you—don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

Dreams can happen in any of the four stages of sleep. The most memorable and clearest dreams happen in the last stage of sleep (also known as REM sleep). The sleep cycle repeats about four to five times every night. So you can see how a person has several different dreams in one night. Most people only remember dreams that happen closer to the morning when they are about to wake up. That you can’t remember those dreams does not mean they never happened.
The stages in the sleep cycle are organized by the changes in different brain activities.

Stage 1: You are entering into light sleep. In this stage, your eyes move rapidly. We call this NREM. The body gets relaxed and your body temperature lowers. Your heart rate lowers, too. The body is preparing to enter into deep sleep.
Stage 2: Also characterized by NREM. In this stage, the body temperature and heart rate drop again. You are completely asleep.
Stage 3: Still in the NREM stage, this is a deeper sleep still.
Stage 4: In this stage of sleep, your eyes move back or forward. We call it REM sleep. This stage happens at about 90-100 minutes after the beginning of sleep. Your blood pressure rises, heart rate speeds up. The majority of your dreams happen in this stage.
These stages repeat themselves throughout a night’s sleep.
小題1: Dreams can happen in ___________.
A. Stage 1 and 2           B. Stage 3 and 4            C. every stage
小題2:Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?

C. If one can’t remember his dreams, he never dreams at all.
小題3:What will happen in Stage 2?

小題4:The first REM sleep happens about ___________ after the starting of sleep.

Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 55 when I was in high school.
The test was the final for a course. I remember waiting anxiously as my teacher Mr. Right passed out our papers one by one. It was a rather difficult test. I heard my classmates groaning, and I could tel by the groans that the scores weren’t looking good.
Mr. Right put my paper on my desk. There in big red numbers, circled to draw attention, was my score, 55!
I lowered my head, and covered the score up quickly. A 55 is not something that you wanted your classmates to see.“The scores were not very good, none of you passed,”Mr. Right said. “The highest score in the class was a 55.”
A 55. That’s me!
Suddenly my sad look didn’t look so bad. I had the highest score. I felt a lot better.
I walked home alone that day with the low but high score. My father knew that I had a big test that day and asked me as soon as I got home, “How did you do in your test?”“I made a 55,”I said.
A frown(皺眉)now stood on my father’s face. I knew I had to explain immediately. “But Dad, I had the highest score in the calss,”I proudly stated. I thought that explanation would make a difference.“You failed!”my father replied.“But it’s the highest!” I insisted.“I don’t care what scores others had, but you failed. What matters is what you do!”my father firmly said.
For years, my father was always that way. It didn’t matter what others did, it only mattered what I did and that I did it excelently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom(智慧)of good parents until we ourselves stand in the parents’shoes. My father’s words have carried me throughout life.
