In the 13th century(世紀(jì)), the famous Italian traveller, Marco Polo, travelled a long way to China.During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money. In western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century(世紀(jì)).
A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented(發(fā)明) paper almost 2,000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book. Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting(浪費(fèi))so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day, people throw away about 2,800 tons(噸) of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48,000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don't, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.
So how can we save paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes. We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper packets. We can also use cotton handkerchiefs (手帕) and not paper ones. When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant gives us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.
Everyone can help to save paper. If we all think carefully, we can help protect(保護(hù)) trees. But we should do it now , before it is too late.

閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)短中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一詞)
Hi, everyone! I will graduate from high school in June. Some of my foreign friends have asked me about the process of entering an American university(綜合性大學(xué)), so here I will tell you how it works.
First you have to choose which university you want to go to. This is not easy, as there are over 3,000 universities and colleges in the USA. Do you want to stay near home, or do you want to go far away? What do you want to study? Once you have decided what is important to you, I would suggest choosing about five schools to apply to (申請(qǐng)). This way, if one or two schools do not accept you, you still have a chance of being accepted by the others.
After you have chosen which schools you would like to apply to, you have to finish an application form for each one. You also need to ask two or three of your teachers to write letters to the universities explaining why you would be a good university student. For many people, the worst part of applying for university is taking tests. Depending on which college or university you want to go to, you have to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which tests your language, math and writing skills, or the American College Test (ACT), which tests your knowledge in English, math, science and history.
After you have been accepted to a university, you need to be able to pay for your study there. To help students pay for their education, the government offers loans(貸款)which students do not have to repay until after they graduate. Scholarships(獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金)are also available to students who have excellent grades, who are good players or who have financial(財(cái)政)needs. Because university tuition is so expensive, many students also work part-time while they are at university.
University courses are quite different from classes at high school. You only go to each class two or three times a week, you have to study a lot more outside of class. Classes are much bigger too and some can have as many as 200 students in them. There will be many new things to learn, but I think I will enjoy university.
