What’s language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practicing grammar rules(規(guī)則) and learning lists of words --the longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong. Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native(本土的) speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Saw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. So Chinese students should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo(做過頭)it. They should put communication(交際)first.
小題1: Language is used to __________ .
A.express oneself
B.practise grammar rules.
C.talk with foreigners only
D.learn lists of words
小題2: If too many native speakers break a rule,________ .
A.what they use will become right.
B.they are against the law
C.they should say sorry to others.
D.they will become heroes
小題3: When we speak a foreign language, we should________ .
A.speak in Chinese way
B.speak by the rules
C.speak to native speakers
D.not be afraid of making mistakes
小題4:What should Chinese students put first?
A.LanguageB.CommunicationC.RulesD.Grammar

小題1:A
小題2:A
小題3:D
小題4:B

試題分析:本文講述了語言是干什么的,應該怎樣學習外語以及本民族的人學習本族語時是怎樣的。
小題1:根據(jù)Language is for the exchange of ideas and information.可知,語言是用來表述思想和信息的,也就是表達自己的觀點的。所以本題選A。
小題2:根據(jù)What used to be wrong becomes right可知,如果本族人說語言時犯的錯誤較多,慢慢的就會成正確的了。所以本題選A。
小題3:根據(jù)One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language可知,當說外語時不應該害怕犯錯,所以本題選D。
小題4:根據(jù)最后一句They should put communication(交際)first.可知,本題應該選B。
點評:由于本文是有關(guān)學外語的,故閱讀時可以結(jié)合我們平時學習英語的感受進行理解。做題時,應該根據(jù)題干內(nèi)容在文中找出相同或相近的內(nèi)容,有時可以根據(jù)內(nèi)容加以推測。這些題目往往是孤立的,所以一定應該注意每句話的內(nèi)容。

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word. Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone as long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important, when there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way.

Mrs Elise was my teacher in the fourth grade. One day at lunch time, I was getting ready to eat my tuna fish (金槍魚) sandwich and suddenly Mrs Elise asked me if she could buy my sandwich from me. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot hunch from the cafeteria (食堂).
I was excited. I never bought my lunch at the cafeteria. It was too expensive for my family, and I always carried my lunch and took the bag back home to use it again the next day. So you could understand my happiness when I had the chance to buy a hot lunch.
When we finished lunch that day, Mrs Elise took me aside and said she wanted to explain why she had bought my sandwich. I really didn’t care why, but it gave me a few minutes of her special attention, so I was quiet as she explained. She told me that she was a Catholic(天主教徒) and Catholics didn’t eat red meat on Fridays, they ate fish on Fridays.
Oh, I couldn’t wait to get home and tell my mother that from then on I wanted a tuna fish sandwich on Fridays. After my mother understood why, she gladly made tuna fish sandwiches for me on Fridays. She even made it with brown bread because she knew Mrs Elise liked brown bread. From then on, every Friday I could get in line with other kids for a hot lunch. I didn’t care how many of the kids complained about cafeteria food. It tasted divine to me!
I realize now that Mrs Elise could have made herself tuna fish sandwiches on Fridays. But she bought mine because she saw a little girl who was excited at the simple act of having a hot lunch.

What will you do to make sure you reach your goals? There are 1 main steps .
First, sit down and 2 your dreams out. By writing them you will get a better idea of where you really want to go. Imagine yourself at the end of the year or maybe 3 five years. What do you see? 4 do people see you? What are you doing? Are you 5 ?
Well, a dream is just that. It’s a vision (遠見) of how you 6 yourself in the future. As long as you know the direction in which you want to go, you can begin 7 some goals.
8 come the goals. Goals are ‘wants’. So are dreams, but goals are more specific (具體的). If you want to be rich, tell how much 9 you need to be rich. If you want 10 grades, tell what you mean by ‘good’. In fact, the more specific the goal is, the 11 it will be to get it. Give numbers and times. Don’t use words like ‘lots’ or ‘more’. 12, I want a ‘B’ in each of my subjects.
Third are the objectives (目標). They tell 13 what you will do and when you will do it. When you think about what you will do, don’t use words like ‘ 14 ’ or ‘maybe’. Be sure your objectives can be measured (估量). Every day or every week you can ask, ‘Did I 15 this?’ and you can answer with either a yes or a no. Don’t leave room for ‘maybes’.
