As we all know, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. In some places we can’t see
fish   1    in the river or trees on the hills. Some people even have no clean water to drink.
Recently, a new lifestyle called low carbon life is 37   2   every comer of our country. The meanings of
low carbon are   3    energy and no waste. It is such an important project that I can’t wait   4    my ideas
on how to promote it.
First,we should   5    a no-car day every week in our school. Because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy.  6   the no-car day, neither students   7    teachers are allowed to drive to school. At the same time, just walk or run. Use our   8    and enjoy the fun.
Second, we had better not use plastic bags   9    . No one can stand the “white pollution”,    10   it is wise to use cloth bags which can    11   again and again.
12   ,one thing    13   we should keep in mind is that every big thing comes from the small details.
So, as students, we ought to turn    14   the lights the moment we leave, use    15   sides of the paper, and reuse our textbooks and so on.
All in all, it weighs greatly for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into practice. Just set our mind to
these:no-car days, no plastic bags, and no waste. Let’s do it now.

Every day at least 10000 persons in the world die of starvation, according to the World Health Organization.
One-third to one-haft of the earth's population is under-nourished (營(yíng)養(yǎng)不良的) even though more than the
necessary food for everyone on earth is available (可獲得的).
Many nutrition experts (營(yíng)養(yǎng)學(xué)家專家) say that one of the reasons people starve is that they are willing to
eat only the kind of foods they are used to. For example, enough rice to feed 1000 Chinese would be left to
spoil among Eskimos, who don't eat rice. A store house full of bacon that would be food in many places
around the world would mean nothing to millions of East Indians, who won't eat pork (豬肉) for religious
reasons. Another group of East Indians, called Hindus, won't eat beef because their religion forbids it. Instead
of being butchered, cows are allowed to roam (閑逛) freely in the streets in Indian cities.
Thousands of scientists in all parts of the world are working to change soybeans (黃豆) and fish meal into
food that people of different nationalities will eat. Both soybeans and fish meal are high in protein (蛋白質(zhì)) and
are available in large quantities. These scientists feel that human eating habits are often at the bottom of the
world-wide food problem.
1. What is the main idea of this passage?
[     ]
A. The World Health Organization says people are starving.
B. There is enough food for everyone.
C. People's eating habits are one of the causes of the world-wide food problem.

A. to explain one of the reasons people die of starvation
B. to explain why there are always starving people
C. to persuade people to eat food of soybeans and fish meal
D. to describe the eating habits of the East Indians
3. East Indians won't eat pork _____.

A. because they don't know what pork is
B. for religious reasons
C. because they prefer to starve
D. for health reasons

D. do everything

These two letters appeared in a newspaper. Both writers have their own ideas on zoos.
                                                                 Zoos Do a Good Job
It is good to keep animals in zoos. I know a lot of people think it is wrong to keep animals in zoos.
However, I believe that zoos have many good points.
Firstly, zoos are places for people to see different animals from all over the world. Without the zoos,
most people would never see a real bear or tiger.
Secondly, zoos look after the animals very well. The animals are always given food and cleaned
regularly (定期的). In the wild, it is not always possible for an animal to find food, so sometimes it goes
hungry. But animals kept in zoos never go hungry.
Thirdly, zoos protect the animals they look after. They offer them safe places to live in. In the wild,
some kinds of animals are in danger of becoming extinct (滅絕的). But zoos give these animals a chance
to live. Without zoos. There would be fewer kinds of animals in the world.
                                                                                                                          Maria Smith
                                                                      Zoos are Unnatural
In Maria's letter, she says that zoos are good for animals. I am afraid that zoos are not good for
animals, they are only good for people.
It is unnatural and unfair to keep wild animals in cages. Most animals are kept in cages that are too
small for them. In the wild, these animals would travel freely In zoos. They can't do this. This is why the
bears and tigers always look so sad.
Most cages are not very clean, either. It is true that zoos give the animals food regularly, but this is
not natural. Wild animals are used to looking for their own food. We should treat animals in the same
way that we treat other people with respect.
Would anyone be happy if you don't let them go outside his home? Would Maria like to have lots of
people stand out side her flat looking at her? No, she wouldn't. And animals don't like it, either.
                                                                                                                                Philip Black
1. Maria and Philip have quite different ideas on keeping animals in zoos.
2. In Maria's opinion, a real bear or tiger can only be seen in zoos.
3. Maria thinks that animals live better in zoos than in the wild.
4. According to Philip, if cages are big and clean enough, tigers and bears will look happy.
5. Maria and Philip both agree that zoos are good for people.
