What’s the best way to remember our happiest moments, like a birthday or festival? I bet you would answer , “Take lots of photos!” Well, here is a great surprise. People who always take photos may actually be harming(傷害) their memory, because they’re not concentrating on the event itself. That’s according to new research by Fairfield University, Connecticut, in the US. They call this the “photo-taking impairment(損害) affect”.
“People so often take out their cameras almost mindlessly to catch a moment, to the point that they are missing what is happening right in front of them,” Henkel and her team decided to perform an experiment. They wanted to find out whether taking photos in a museum weakened(減弱) a visitor’s memory of what they had seen. So they simply told a group to look around the museum, and either take photos of the items on display, or try to remember what they had seen. In addition(另外), the amount(數(shù)量) of detail(細(xì)節(jié)) they remembered was worse than those who didn’t take photos. “These results show how the mind’s eye and the camera’s eye are not the same,” said Henkel.
But don’t put your camera down just yet. Other studies have found that looking back at old photos helps us remember an event, compared to just taking a photo and forgetting about it. So next time you’re thinking of taking a photo, just think: is it better to look at the beauty around you with your own eyes, or behind the eye of the camera?
小題1: When we take photos, we _________.
A.fail to focus on the event itself
B.can’t record the details
C.remember what we have seen
D.a(chǎn)re likely to have a poor memory

A.People who didn’t take photos did better in the experiment.
B.They asked a group to try to remember what they had seen.
C.The experiment aimed to learn what people were interested in at the museum.
D.People who took photos in the museum could remember less details.
小題3:According to the passage, we’d better _________.
A.never use our cameras
B.remember an event by heart
C.a(chǎn)lways remember an event with the help of a camera
D.see everything only with our own eyes
小題4:What do the results of the experiment show us?
A.The mind’s eye and the camera’s eye are not the same.
B.People remember happiest moments by taking photos.
C.Looking back at old photos helps us remember an event.
D.People don’t like taking photos.
小題5:Where can we probably read this passage?
A.The entrance of a museum.
B.A guidebook on how to take good pictures.
C.An instruction of how to use a camera.
D.A scientific report.

Character, courage and confidence are words you might use to describe your heroes. These words can describe you! Take action as follows and you’ll be a hero, too!
Part 1: Character
Character is something that makes you the person you are like being honest, friendly, and helpful. See the chart below. On the left is our standard of good character. Write down your promise for each line on the right. Then, get a witness(證人)to sign it. Put it up where you’ll see it every day and do your best to keep it.
To build your character
Your promise
I will do my best to…

be honest and fair.
eg. I’ll tell the truth when mom asks if I have finished my homework.
be friendly and helpful.
eg. I’ll help my friend with lessons.
be polite and kind.
eg. I’ll show good manners in class.
be courageous and strong.
eg. I’ll take part in the English singing contest.
Part 2: Courage
Of course it’s going to take a lot of courage t keep your promise. Courage is challenging yourself to do something even though you think it might be hard. For each promise, find out two or three ways to help you keep it. For example, if you think that Being Honest is the hardest promise for you to keep, one of the ways might be “Tell people about my promise so that I won’t break it”.
Part 3: Confidence
Confidence is believing that you have the skills to do something. Do you have a beautiful singing voice? Are you a good painter? There are all talents that can make you feel good, as well as the people around you. Once you’ve decided what your special skill is, think about how you can use your skill to make your corner of the world a better place. If you’re good at art, try painting a picture on an old wall in your school (of course, make sure you’re allowed).
小題1:According to the writer, a hero should be           .
