I used to live in Kobe in Japan. On my way home on the bus every evening I used to look for an old man who often played his saxophone (薩克斯管) near the river. I couldn’t hear his music because the windows were closed on the bus but I imagined it to be loud and clear. I wanted to be like that man.
One night I went to Himeji, a city not far from Kobe. As I walked with my family along the river I saw a statue. It was a young man who looked just like me. He was wearing a cap and smiling. Around his neck was a leather strap (皮帶) and in his hands was a saxophone. He was lifting the saxophone to his lips and he was just about to play. I stayed there for a long time by the statue dreaming of playing a saxophone on TV.
Two weeks later it was my birthday. Imagine my joy when I opened my present from my parents and found that it was a saxophone! I put it to my lips to play, but it wouldn’t make a sound. Then Dad told me to read the instruction book to find out what to do. After about 15 minutes the saxophone was ready to play. I raised it slowly to my lips as my family watched. But still there was no sound. I blew and blew but I couldn’t get the saxophone to play. I was almost crying when suddenly the saxophone made the most beautiful sound—loud and clear like I imagined the music of the man by the river in Kobe. I blew again, I moved my fingers on the saxophone and I made more sounds. I was happy because I was playing very interesting sounds. But I wasn’t playing music yet.
Then came the lessons. Night after night, week after week my teacher made me practice. Slowly I started to improve and at last there came the magic day when I started to play music. Now I’m in the TV studio with my saxophone strapped to my neck and my cap on my head. I’m always thinking of the man by the river in Kobe and the statue smiling at me in Himeiji. I’m a happy man.

Scientists study the world and learn about things using a process called the scientific method(方法). By asking important questions and   16  the answers, it is possible to make amazing discoveries! Sometimes a scientist is   17  to answer his own questions, but if he has taken good notes another scientist may come along later who is able to use new knowledge to answer it.
When you use the scientific method to   18  an experiment, you start by making observations(觀察) about something that  19  you. Based on your observations, you make a hypothesis. This is using  20  you know to make a smart guess about what you think could happen. Then you are ready to begin your experiment. All   21  your experiment you take down notes, which are   22   experiment date(資料). You are constantly making observations during this time. You may make discoveries that cause you to improve your experiment as you go.   23  , you conclude your experiment and begin to look over your notes to decide what it all means. Based on what you have learned, you make a final statement about   24  your hypothesis was correct or not. You have to have reasons and evidence to support what you are saying.
Using the scientific method can be difficult, but rewarding. Because all the steps are organized in a process, the   25  are more valid(可信的). When you provide observations as evidence to support what you are saying, your ideas are more likely to be accepted.

Driving in China
I have been driving cars since I reached the pedals(踏板). In Canada you   1  16 to get a driver’s license. I   2  myself to be a very good driver.
I visited China 20 years ago. I with my wife was in Shanghai to give a paper at a conference. We  3  the number of bicycles on the roads and the few cars. In Canada almost each family has one car, but it was  4  that most Chinese depended on bicycles.
I   5  Shanghai and to other Chinese cities many times since then and have watched the fast changes on the roads. There are far fewer bicycles now but   6  cars. The roads are crowded, the government has been forced to limit the number of days some cars can   7  and the traffic jams are almost constant (經(jīng)常的). So are the accidents. On a recent visit I saw four or five
  8  within a two-week period.
To get a driver’s license in Canada, you must drive, with an examiner, on real roads and in real traffic. However, in China you learn on a closed course,   9  real traffic, get a license and only then are able to drive under real roads.
Driving in Canada and driving in China   10  two different experiences. In Canada there are traffic jams but they aren’t so bad. We have more traffic lights; we obey them and drivers are usually
11 , allowing other cars to cut in front of them knowing it won’t make much difference. In China, if you stop   12  another car cut in front of you will probably be there for a long time because once one car gets in, dozens of   13  will follow.
I would rather   14  the bus than drive my car in downtown Shanghai and Beijing. Because it’s  15  and stronger than most things that might run into it.

A famous building in New York City is turning 100 years old. A year-long celebration is planned for Grand Central Terminal, which is usually called Grand Central station, the sixth most-visited place in the world.
The huge building has not changed much since it opened in February, 1913. About 750,000 people pass through Grand Central every day. Some just come to look at it, others to visit the stores. But most are there to catch the trains that enter and leave from the station. It is the largest train station in the world. There are 67 train tracks, all of them underground.
The main part of the building has large, arched windows, a jeweled four-sided clock and ticket windows. Grand Central has been seen in many movies through the years. Dan Brucker is with the New York Transit Authority, which operates the station. Dan Brucker has worked for the transit authority at Grand Central for 30 years. In all those years, he has not lost his interest in the building.
Justin Ferate, a historian, has been giving tours of Grand Central Station for 30 years. He says the station was designed to make travel a pleasure.
“Why people don't run into each other in Grand Central is simple: each block of stone in Grand Central is the length of your leg. Each block of stone in Grand Central is the length of your arm. Each block of stone is a different color, so it’s a checkerboard, based on you.”
A ten-year-long fight against plans to build a huge office building over Grand Central in 1968 helped create the modern preservation(保護(hù)) movement. Now, no one would think of changing the beauty of the station.

Money, jewels and important documents may not be the only valuables placed in banks these days. Some mothers store their breast milk (母乳) in banks.
There are ten breast milk banks across the United States, where mothers can donate their extra milk for other women’s babies.
Experts say breast milk is the best food for babies. The World Health Organization says it is the only food babies should get during the first six months of life, in most cases. Breast milk is especially important for babies born too early. Sometimes these premature babies must stay in the hospital for many weeks.
James Cameron is a doctor who treats newborns at Lutheran Children’s Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He says breast milk is almost like medicine. Doctor James Cameron says, “The fact is that there are so many different proteins and specialized sugars in the breast milk that the mom’s able to make that help provide immunity (免疫力). It’s very important for the health of the newborn.”
Lucy Baur lives near Fort Wayne. She breastfed both her children and always had more milk than they needed. She wanted to donate to the Indiana Mothers Milk Bank in Indianapolis. But freezing and shipping milk can be costly. Then, a donor station opened near her home.
Milk donations in the United States work like this. Donors must be willing to provide almost three liters of breast milk. They freeze the milk and take it to the station. There, employees warm the milk and mix it with other mothers’ milk. Then, the milk is heated to kill bacteria. After that, the technicians test samples of all the milk to make sure it is safe and healthful. The milk is re-frozen and sent to the main milk bank. The milk bank transports the milk to hospitals to feed premature or sick babies.
Donors are tested for diseases before any milk is accepted. They are not permitted to smoke tobacco, use illegal drugs or drink too much alcohol.
