It's Saturday morning and Tony's sitting at the kitchen table, staring(凝視)into space and playing with
a piece of bread. He's not even hungry. Is he ill? No,  but he does have a problem. He has nothing to do
and there's a simple reason: the Internet is down and Tony has nothing to do.
When he woke up this morning,  Tony was  feeling great.  He jumped  out of bed full of plans for the
weekend ahead. It would be a weekend like any other-a great weekend. But  that was before he turned
on his computer and was unable to go online. No Internet changed everything.
Just as Tony is wondering how he can possibly have a normal(平常的)weekend without the Internet,
his mum walks into the kitchen. "Is everything OK?" she  asks. "No, mum, everything is definitely(的確)
not OK," her sad son replies. "I can't go online  and  I  have homework to finish." His mum laughs, "The
word program is still working, so what's the problem?"
What's the problem? Tony can't believe his  own  mother  is  unable  to  see how serious the problem
really is. To start with, he still needs to do research for his homework. He knows his mum will tell him to
go to the library but he hates the library.  It's  so  dark  and  uncomfortable. And forget homework-what
about the rest of his weekend! Every weekend,  he goes  online to email friends. Then he reads the news
to catch up on what's happening in the world. He plays a few online games and finishes the weekend off
with an online chess game  with  his  cousin  Helen. The  wonderful  weekend-online!  Now it's Saturday
morning and he's not going to have access to(進(jìn)入)the Internet for two whole days. He needs help.

A type of bird that is now extinct (消失) is the passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon lived in the eastern part of North America. Scientists believe that in the year 1500 there were as many as five billion of these birds living from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. They flew at great speeds and would travel to many places to look for food. Passenger pigeons grew to be about 16 inches long.
Settlers who came to North America killed the passenger pigeon for food and for its feathers. The forests where they lived were cut down to clear the land for farming. Because the passenger pigeon laid only one egg at a time, their population did not grow quickly. The last passenger pigeon died at Cincinnati Zoological Gardens in 1914.
Another type of bird that has become extint is the dodo. The dodo lived on an island called Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It had short, stubby legs and wings and a large curved beak. The dodo was about the size of a large turkey. It was acturally related to the pigeon, but it could not fly. Like the passenger pigeon it laid only one egg at a time. Dodos became extinct because they were eaten by sailors and animals, such as pigs and monkeys, that the sailors brought to the island. The dodo is believed to have died out in 1680.
Another flightless bird that has become extinct is the moa. The moa lived on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Like the dodo, the moa’s legs were shorter, but some of these birds grew to be more than ten feet tall. And the causes of its extinction is the same as the dodo’s.   The moa is believed to have died out sometime during the 1700s.

Dear sir,
I am writing to introduce myself, with the hope of getting the job you advertised in Daily News.
When I was a child, I was fond of English and always got good grades. In 1994, after six years of hard work in Beijing No. 4 Middle School, I entered People’s University. I studied English there for four years.
Luckily, I got my first job when I graduated. I taught English in Beijing No. 4 Middle School from 1998 to 2001. Then I got the chance to receive further education in University of Hawaii in the US. That was a precious experience of my life. I learnt a lot during those two years, especially the differences between eastern and western cultures.
I came back to People’s University in 2003. I worked as an assistant(助手) for 2 years and then as a professor. So far, I have got 8 years of working experience.
I won lots of awards. I was an “Excellent Student” of People’s University in 1997, and “Outstanding Teacher” of Beijing No. 4 Middle School in 2000.
Thank you for reading my letter, and I will appreciate it very much if you can reply soon.
Yours sincerely
Li Guolong
