Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to cheat? When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out (略去) important information that should be inside, he can give you a false picture.
For example, someone might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery(彩票). It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!”
This guy is a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $ 200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.
Some politicians (政客) often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term, her state lost one million jobs and got three million jobs. Then she tries to get another term. One of her opponents (競爭對(duì)手) says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!” That’s true. However, an honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state had increased two million jobs.’’
Advertisers will sometimes use half–truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to say that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of cheating happens too often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
小題1:We may infer that the author believes people should ________.
A.buy lottery tickets if possible
B.make use of half–truths
C.be careful about what they are told
D.not trust the Yucky Company
小題2:How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to cheat?
A.OneB.TwoC.Three D.Four
小題3:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Using half truths is against the law.
B.Technically, half truths are in fact lies.
C.Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.
D.Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.
小題4:Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A.He’s really a big loser!
B.Sometimes the truth can lie as well.
C.Advertisers will sometimes use half truths.
D.It’s against the law to make false statements.

Have you been asked for money by some disabled beggars while you’re enjoying shopping? Do you have any pity on them who are so poor and lonely or do you just feel afraid of their terrible shapes? As one of the most special groups, disabled people’s living conditions — not only their material (物質(zhì)的) conditions, but their mental (精神的) world — really need improvement.
The treatment for disabled people should go like this: First, don’t look down upon them. Don’t be afraid of looking at the terrible shapes of the disabled. Try to treat them equally. Because they are a part of the society (社會(huì)),we can’t discard (拋棄) them. The second is to help them as much as we could. If you can be a volunteer and do some work for the disabled people, that would be very nice. Being able to multitask-- doing several things at the same time--is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.
What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic products as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.
Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.
Multitasking also has an effect on young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive (肯定的) answer. However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.
小題1:What does the underlined word "juggle" most probably mean?
A.Want to buy.
B.Use at the same time.
C.Take the place of.
D.Search information from.

D.young people hardly communicate with their family members
小題3:What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Young people must learn skills for future jobs.
B.Young people benefit (獲益) a lot from modern gadgets.
C.Multitasking is an important skill to young people.
D.Multitasking influences young people's development seriously.
小題4:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Young people think multitasking is good for their study and work.
B.Employers consider it unnecessary for young people to be taught all over again.
C.Educators feel that young people don't need to improve their study skills.
D.People from the world of education believe multitasking has a good effect on children's later study skills.

A.providing special examples
B.following the natural time order

Teens want structure in their lives, which means they want their lives well-planned. To begin building structure, teens need love and trust. They need to know their parents arc there to give them needed love and support (支持).Teens want to be sure that nothing can prevent parents from shouldering their responsibility for them — not their growing maturity (成熟),misbehavior, nor anger at something they have done. Teens want parents to keep control while allowing them to make some decisions.
There are some ways you can help your teens create reasonable structure and remain close. One way is to spend time together. Parents often mistake their teens’ increased interest in friends for a disinterest in the family.
Teens would like to spend more time doing things with their parents, but watching TV is not counted as spending time together. As your teens mature, it is important for you and your teens spend time alone together, one to one. Your teens need time to talk to you alone without any other family member present.
Talk with your teens about their interests and concerns. Make sure you really show interest in what is happening. When talking with your teens, give full attention and do not stop them.
The way to help your teens become adults is to let your teens into your world. Sharing your emotions and concerns with your teens is important. Avoid causing needless worry.
Trust your teens. Don't expect the worst. Hope for the best. Telling your teens you don’t like their friends will cause the teens not to bring their friends home. If something should go wrong, believe that your teens didn’t do it on purpose.
It is very important that you treat your teens with respect. Teens need the same respect adults show for total strangers. Don’t talk down to your teens.
You need to be supportive o f your teens. What may be a small problem to you may be troubling to your teens. Teens don't have the experiences that adults have had. Let the teens know that you understand how much it hurts when something happens that is upsetting or hurtful to them. As they mature, they can look back at some problems they had and laugh at having been upset by something that now seems unimportant.
The most important things to remember are: talk with your teens, listen to their worries and offer suggestions when needed. This will help your teens to live a well-organized life.
