Gina was a 3rd grader. She was very clever, but she had no friends at school until Rita joined her class. New to the city and too shy to make any friends, Rita did not mind being Gina's friend. At least she had someone to play with.
One day the teacher scolded (訓(xùn)斥) Rita for not concentrating when she was doing some math problems. The whole class laughed at her and Rita cried hard. The teacher had patiently explained how to do them, but Rita was just not able to understand.
Gina told her mother about Rita's bad day. "Why don't you try to help her?" asked her mother. " She likes you very much."
" Mommy, I don't have time to waste." said Gina.
" But Rita is your friend and if you don't help her, who will?" said her mother. But Gina didn't think so.
" Then Gina's mother decided to act tough(強(qiáng)硬地)." If you don't help her, I will not let you watch cartoons for a week."
Extremely unhappy, Gina taught Rita. Rita understood, for Gina knew how to explain things simply. Rita was excited and told everyone what a good friend Gina was.
One day, Gina made a mistake, and the principal (校長) asked Gina to pick up the waste paper in every classroom after school.
After school, Gina began to clean the classrooms and she felt very sad. Rita found out about it and went to help her do it.

In a small village in England about 150 years ago, a mail coach (郵車) was standing on the street.  Around the coach many people were talking to one another about it.  Mail coach did not come to that village so often in those days.  People had to pay a lot of money to get a letter.  The person who sent the letter did not have to pay.  The person who got the letter had to pay the postage (郵資).  “Here?s a letter for Miss Alice Brown,” said the mailman.  Everyone turned to a girl of about eighteen who was standing by the coach.  “I?m Alice Brown,” she said in a low voice.  The mailman gave her the letter.  Alice looked at the envelope for a minute, and then handed it back to the mailman.  “I’m sorry I can?t take it,” she said.  “I don?t have enough money to pay the postage. ” The people standing around were very sorry for the girl.  They were silent for a while.  Then a gentleman came up to the mailman and paid the postage for Alice’s letter.  When the gentleman gave her the letter, she said with a smile, “Oh, thank you very much, sir.  This letter is from the young man I’m going to marry.  His name is Tom.  He went to London to look for work.  He has to get enough money for our marriage (結(jié)婚).  I’ve waited a long time for this letter, but now don’t need it.  I don’t have to open the envelope because there is nothing inside. ” “Really?” the gentleman said in surprise.  “How do you know that?” “He told me that he would put some signs on the envelope.  Look, sir, this cross in the corner means that he is well, and this circle means he has found work.  That’s very good news. ” The gentleman was Sir Rowland Hill.  He did not forget Alice and her letter.  “The postage to be paid by the receiver has to be changed,” he said to himself.  He thought and thought for many years.  At last he had a good plan.  “The postage has to be much lower,” he said.  “What about a penny (便士) for a letter? And the person who sends the letter pays the postage.  He has to buy a stamp and put it on the envelope. ” “A good idea!” people said when they heard of his plan.  The Government decided to adopt (采納) the plan.  The first postage stamp was put out in 1840.  It was called the “Penny Black”.  It had a picture of the Queen on it.

Do you live in a city? Do you know how cities began? Long long ago, the world had only a few thousand people. These people moved from one place to another. They moved over the land, hunting animals for food.
No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their life changed. They did not have to look for food any longer. They could stay in one place and grow it.
People began to live near one another, so the first village was established (建立). Many people came to live in the villages, and these villages became even larger.
When machines appeared, life in the villages changed again. People built factories. More and more people lived near the factories. The cities began.
Today, it’s strange that some people are moving back to small villages. Can you tell me why?
小題1:People moved from place to place to hunt animals.
小題2:The story says,“No one knows how or when these people learned about growing food. But when they did, their life changed.” In this sentence, the word “they” means people.

The word “sport” first meant somethin that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting (捕獵) wild animals and birds.
About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can earn a lot of money.
For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than $3000 a year. The starts earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions (網(wǎng)球錦標(biāo)賽) can make more than $50000 in a year. Of course, only a few sporsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals (個人的) like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that: the star can earn more money from advertising than from sport. An advertising for sports equipment (設(shè)備) does not simply say “Buy our thing”. It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their name or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.
根據(jù)上文內(nèi)容判斷正(T)誤(F)
小題1:A “professional” sportsman is someone who likes sports very much.
小題2: The word “sport” now usually means “organized ” games.
小題3: An advertisement for sports equipment just says “Buy our thing”.
小題4:The sport stars can earn as much money from advertising as from sport.
小題5:This passage mainly talks about sport and money.

What’s the most important thing for you to have in your life? Somebody mentions hard-work, others suggest knowledge, love and luck.
If you arrange the 26 English letters alphabetically(按字母表的順序)and use numbers to represent each of them, for example, 1 for a, 2 for b, 3 for c…, you can change an English word into a number. So hard-work becomes 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11="98," meaning 98 is its mark; knowledge: 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5="96," while love :12+15+22+5="54," and luck : 12+21+3+11="47," a small mark. None of these words can give one a full mark. What about money or prayer(祈禱)? They can’t, either.
Then what else? Don’t be worried. You can always find an answer to a problem in your life, when you change your way of looking at things or doing things, or your attitude. Yes, attitude is the word. See for yourself: attitude:1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100,a full mark.
Different attitudes lead to different courses of life. Most times people hope for a better life. It is possible that one will have a change for the better after one has changed one’s attitude.
When you change your manner and become friendly towards others, you’ll meet more smiling faces towards you. In the same way, if you take a positive attitude towards failure(失敗), you’ll find it’s also rewarding though it has caused you losses.

I never saw my father home from work late or ill, nor did I ever see my father take a “night out with the boys”. He had no bobbies but just took care of his family.
For 22 years, since I left home for college, my father called me every Sunday at 9:00 am. He was always interested in my life-how my family was doing. The calls even came when he and my mother were in Australia, England or Florida.
Nine years ago when I bought me first house, my father, 67 years old, spent eight hours a day for three days, painting my house. He would not allow me to pay someone to have it done. All he asked, was a glass of iced tea, and that I hold a paintbrush for him and talk to him. But I was too busy, for I had a law practice to run, and I could not take the time to hold the paintbrush, or talk to my father.
Five years ago, my 71-year-old father spent five hours putting together a swing set(秋千)for my daughter. Again, all he asked was that I get him a glass of iced tea, and talk to him, But again, I had laundry to do, and the house to clean.
The morning on Sunday, January 16, 1995, my father telephoned me as usual, this time he had seemed to have forgotten some things we had discussed the week before. I had to get to church, and I cut the conversation short.
The call came at 4:40 am. That day my father was sent to hospital in Florida. I got on a plane immediately, and I vowed(發(fā)誓)that when I arrived, I would make up for the lost time, and have a nice long talk with him ad really get to know him.
I arrived in Florida at 1:00 am, but my father had passed away at 9:12 pm. This time it was he who did not have time to talk, or time to wait for me.
In the years since his death I have learnt much about my father, and even more about every single day.
