The city's Department of Transportation hopes the lower speed limit will make people drive more carefully and reduce traffic accidents and deaths. The city's mayor is Bill de Blasio. Road speed limits are set in many countries. The speed limits are used to set the maximum speed for cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, etc. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that around 1. 24 million people die each year in traffic accidents. This number can fall if people drive more slowly.
About the new speed limit, different people have different ideas. Most people say that it is a good traffic rule. They promise to obey the new rule. We often praise science.
It explains the world and makes our lives easier with technology. One of the most exciting fields in science is artificial intelligence (人工智能) . This is an area where scientists are working on creating machines that can think like humans.
However, one of the most famous scientists has a very dark warning for us about this type of technology.
" The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," said Professor Stephen Hawking to the BBC.
Hawking is a well-known British physicist and author of the best-selling science book — A Brief History of Time. This warning came after commenting on the technology he uses to speak with. As Hawking suffers from a serious disease called ALS,he needs an AI computer to communicate. The computer learns how Hawking thinks and suggests the words he may want to use next.
This is a basic type of AI,which is very useful, yet Hawking fears the possibility of creatjng machines that can match or surpass human intelligence. And it's easy to imagine how terrible things may be. Many TV shows and films display big machines that are far cleverer than us. " Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution (進化) ,couldn’t compete," said Hawking.
But not every scientist is pessimistic (悲觀的) about AI technology. ” I believe we will remain in charge of the technology for a long time”1 said Rollo Carpenter, the creator of Cleverbot in the UK,which is a software program that remembers past conversations. "The potential" of it to solve many of the world problems will be realized."
41. The best-selling science book A Brief History of Time explains the world.

Internet companies (公司) such as Google and Microsoft have ^thousands of computers. As these computers deal with information, they produce lots of heat,so they need huge cooling system(系統(tǒng)) Thes systems send the heat into the air
A company in Holland (荷蘭) thinks paying to make the computers work and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So the company developed a special device — the e-Radiator.
Boaz Leupe, head of the company, says the e-Radiator works as a heating system and saves money. He explains that the energy is used twice — once to heat the home and once to cool the computer and that the users don't have to pay to cool their computers.
Five homeowners in Holland are testing the heating system in their homes.
"We pay for the computer using,so, in that way, homeowners get heating for free,Boaz says.
Jan Visser is one of the homeowners. ”If you use the computer more, the e-Radiator produces more heat," he says. "It cannot provide enough heat if you don't use your computer often. .' But he is ready to try it. It's a great help for his family.
The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperatures of up to 55°C. It says the system could save its users about$ 440 a year.
