If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, and when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault (過錯). Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write and when they have to remember things, they cannot write them down in a small notebook. As a result, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.

小題1:細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文中語句“When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.”理解可知。記憶力低下的主要原因就是缺少訓(xùn)練的機會,故選C。
小題2:細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文中語句“If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak,”理解可知。如果我們很少使用腿和胳膊,它們就會變得非常虛弱,故選B。
小題3:細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文中語句“When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.”理解可知。大腦也是需要鍛煉的,故選A。
小題4:細(xì)節(jié)理解題,根據(jù)文中語句“But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed, and few of us know that it is just his own fault (過錯).”理解可知。記憶力差的主要原因就是訓(xùn)練的少,這是自己的過錯,故選A。

Can plants eat people? Probably not, but there are many plants that eat meat. Some of them are big. And they can eat small animals. One famous meat-eating plant is the Venus flytrap(捕蠅草).
The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.
Why do plants do it? Most plants get what they need from the sun, the air, and the ground. In some places, the ground is very poor. It doesn't have all these important things, especially nitrogen(氮). Animal meat has a lot of nitrogen, so some plants eat meat to get what they need. Let's hope that some of the bigger plants don't get the same idea!

Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best-loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, life magazine published a report about school children who could not read well. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize. He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents.
He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. A big, mighty(高大的) tree stood in a forest. Its branches(樹枝) spread out and its roots (根) went deep in the earth. A lot of people came here to have a rest under it. And a lot of birds stood on its branches to sing and dance. The big tree was very proud all the time.
At the foot of the tree, there was a little plant. The plant was thin, and seemed to be blown down by any of a little wind.
One day, the two neighbors were having a little chat.
“Well, little one,” said the tree to the plant, “why not put your feet deeply in the earth, and raise your head high in the air as I do?”
“I see there is no need to do so,” said the plant with a smile. “In fact, I think I may be safer in this way.”
“Safer?” said the tree. “Are you safer than I am? Do you know how deep my roots are in the earth and how strong my branches are? Who can possibly pull me out by the roots or bow my head to the ground?” And the tree didn’t want to say anything to the weak plant.

More and more people around the world are joining in dangerous sports. Some people climbed the highest mountains; some traveled into unknown parts of the world; some sailed small boats across the largest sea. Now some people begin to look for new excitement.
Bungee jumping (蹦極) and motorcycle racing (摩托車賽) are quite dangerous sports. Bungee jumping only lasts a few minutes or even seconds. You jump from a high place, 200 meters above the ground, and there is a rubber band (橡膠帶子) tied to your legs. When you jump down, the rubber band pulls you up. About 2,000,000 people around the world have tried bungee jumping.
Why do people join in these dangerous sports? Some scientists say that it is because modern life has become safe and it is not interesting. In the past, people lived in danger. They had to go out and look for food, and life was like a fight but was interesting.

The rockets take astronauts and man-made satellites into space. The satellites are used for communication, weather monitoring and research. But how do satellites stay up without falling down?
There are two opposite forces (力量) acting on the satellite. One of them is the force of gravitation (地心引力), which tries to pull the satellite towards the earth. The other force is created by the rotation (旋轉(zhuǎn)) of the satellite around the earth. This force tries to take the satellite away from the earth. With these two forces, the satellite goes round and round. The gravitational pull of the earth (the force which pulls everything towards the ground) is like a rope which keeps the satellite from flying away.
Everything that goes up has to come down. It is only a matter of time before a satellite comes back to the earth. As time goes by, the satellite loses its speed, which makes the gravitational pull stronger than the force pulling it away. This makes the satellite crash (墜落) down to the earth.
小題1:Which of the following uses of satellites is NOT mentioned?
A.communication
B.monitoring the weather condition
C.doing some research
D.taking pictures
小題2:The force that pulls the satellite towards the earth is created by ________.
A.the earth
B.the satellite itself
C.the rotation of the satellite
D.the rope
小題3:Why can’t the satellites fly away?
A.Because of the force from the earth.
B.Because the satellite is too big.
C.Because of the force created by the rotation of the satellite around the earth.
D.Because people on earth have made ropes to tie the satellites tightly.
小題4:The satellite will finally crashes down to the earth ________.
A.when it flies faster
B.when its speed slows down
C.when people cut the rope
D.when there is no electricity in it
小題5:Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.There are four forces acting on the satellite.
B.The force of gravitation makes the satellite go round and round.
C.As time goes by, the satellite will finally fall down.
D.The satellite will stay in space forever.
