Many years ago, there were lots of trees on earth, because summer lasted a whole year. What was the forest like? It is not difficult to see, because parts of that ancient(古老的)forest still stand. It is the rainforest. Here, even in a sunny day water drops through the leaves.

Today's largest rainforest is in South America. It covers about a million square miles. All the trees are very tall;the young trees are nearly sixty feet high. But it is not easy for some to grow higher because very little sunlight leaches them.

Scientists are trying to make the deserts(沙漠)into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time.

Why is more and more land becoming desert? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.

Some places on the earth don't get very much rain. But they still don't become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don't let the hot sun make the earth even drive. Plants don't let the wind blow the dirt(泥土)away. When a little of(一點(diǎn)兒)rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.

( )(1)Plants can keep dry land from becoming desert

( )(2)It is good to get rid of(消除)the grass in the desert

( )(3)All places without much rain will become deserts.

( )(4)It's important for us to plant trees and protect(保護(hù))forests.

A big, mighty(高大的) tree stood in a forest. Its branches(樹(shù)枝) spread out and its roots (根) went deep in the earth. A lot of people came here to have a rest under it. And a lot of birds stood on its branches to sing and dance. The big tree was very proud all the time.
At the foot of the tree, there was a little plant. The plant was thin, and seemed to be blown down by any of a little wind.
One day, the two neighbors were having a little chat.
“Well, little one,” said the tree to the plant, “why not put your feet deeply in the earth, and raise your head high in the air as I do?”
“I see there is no need to do so,” said the plant with a smile. “In fact, I think I may be safer in this way.”
“Safer?” said the tree. “Are you safer than I am? Do you know how deep my roots are in the earth and how strong my branches are? Who can possibly pull me out by the roots or bow my head to the ground?” And the tree didn’t want to say anything to the weak plant.
But the tree was to regret its words very soon. One evening, a great hurricane(颶風(fēng)) came. It blew the trees off their roots and almost destroyed the forest completely. It uprooted(將……連根拔起)the mighty tree and blew it away with great force.
