Rats (鼠) have lived on the earth longer than man. And wherever man has gone, except for the very coldest parts of the world, rats have also gone and have very quickly grown in numbers.

History books tell us that the armies of rats moved into Europe from Asia hundreds of years ago. On their way, these armies of rats swam rivers, raced across open fields, destroyed crops, and moved through buildings, scaring and frightening people.

It didn’t take rats long to discover that there was a better way of traveling than on foot. They found ships just to their liking. These unlisted passengers had no trouble adjusting to sea life on any kind of ship.

In no time, they were exploring below decks and making holes in sacks (麻袋) and boxes filled with good things to eat. Then as now they were no fiends of sailors. Along the wharves (碼頭) of the seaports all over the world you can hear tales about rats. Some of these stories, such as those about rats being the first to leave the sinking ship, are probably true. This is because more rats live below decks in the very bottom of a ship. So they are the first to get wet if the ship develops a leak (漏洞). No wonder they run!

Though people have lived with rats all through history, they have said very little good about rats. Rats eat crops, damage property and even cause deaths by carrying disease from one place to another.

Yet, it is no easy job destroying rats. Rats defend their homes with great courage. Even a cat will think twice about fighting a large rat. And they are smart enough to live under all sorts of conditions. Now there are more rats living on the earth than there are people. It is thought that there are more than five billion rats alive today.

(  )59.The writer tells the reader in the first paragraph that                          .

B. rats enjoyed life on the ship and they never suffered from seasickness.

C. rats adapted themselves to sea life better than passengers on the ship.

D. rats lived better on sea than on land.

(  )61.If a ship is sinking, rats are the first to leave because                           .

       A. when in danger, rats act more quickly than man.

       B. living in the bottom of the ship, rats are the first to feel water coming into the ship.

       C. rats are very sensitive (敏感) to what is happening around them.

D. rats can predict dangers.

Science has told us too much about the moon that it is fairly easy to imagine what it would be like to get there. It is certainly not a friendly place. Since there is no air or water, there can be no life of any kind. There is not much variety of scenery either. For mile after mile there are only flat plains of dust with mountains around them. Above, the sun and stars shine in the black sky. If you step out of the mountain shadow, it means moving from the severe cold into intense (強(qiáng)烈的) heat. These extreme temperatures continually break rocks away from the surface of the mountains. The moon is also a very silent world, for sound waves can only travel through air. But beyond the broken horizon, you see a friendly sight. Our earth is shining more brightly than the stars. From this distance, it looks like an immense (巨大的) blue, green and brown ball.

(  )62.The moon is an unfriendly place because                                    .

(E)

In one way of thinking, failure is part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The “spider-story” is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the thirteenth century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider (蜘蛛) making a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times. On the seventh time he made it and went on to make his web. Bruce is said to have been encouraged by this and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery (電池) when he had failed so often, he replied, “Failure? I have no failure. Now I know 50,000 ways it won’t work.”

So what? First, always think about your failure. What can you change so that things will go right next time?

Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn’t be doing anyway.

The third thing to keep in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to “l(fā)ive with yourself” even though you may have failed.

(  )67.This passage deals with                          .

       A. failure and success                                 B. two sides of failure

C. the “spider-story”                             D. the invention of light bulb

(  )68.In the first paragraph the writer tells mainly about                              .

       A. the value of failure     B. how people fail    C. famous failures     D. how not to fail

(  )69.The thing the writer does not tell you to do as to dealing with failure is                 .

A. check out your goals to see if they are right for you

B. think about failure as part of your life

C. think about failure and find out what went wrong

D. keep away from things that are beyond you

(  )70.Even if we have failed, we should                             .

       A. Learn to forget it                              B. learn to remember it

C. learn to enjoy it                                D. learn to accept it
