Last weekend, I helped my grandparents prepare for our trip to Xi'an. On Saturday morning, together with them, I searched the Internet for the train schedule, the weather in Xi'an, or some hotel informations. In the afternoon, I went to the train station and manage to buy two tickets for them since there was a long queue. After dinner, I packed all the things that might be need into suitcase. And the next morning, I went to the station to see them away off. Wave goodbye to them on the platform, I felt very happy for them and wished them a safer journey.

Should parents ever hit their children?

Research suggests many of us are likely to respond “no”, and public support for spanking(打屁股) has been falling over the years．But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit spanking their child at least once．

I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment．And, no, I don't feel I was damaged by it．

Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children．

But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer．

Two years ago, Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents used physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive．

Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades．He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers．It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive (反作用的) to their mental development, as well．

Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks (用巴掌打) on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit．

Last year, Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never spanked．There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished．Gunnoe’s research suggests they don' t turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked．

There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾氣)．But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment．

It is well-known that good habits do us good all our life. Entered high school. I took delight in having fast food and often eat too much. In the end, I was so series overweight that I suffered a lot from my awkward appearance. It made matters worse was the fact that my classmates made a fun of me at times. From now on, I made up my mind to avoiding snacks. In the meanwhile, I took off jogging to lose weight. In my surprise, it was not long until I did succeed in creating my new appearance. Only then did I start to appreciate the importance of developing a good habit.

Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation(誘惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.

Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?

To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines（學(xué)科）.Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常規(guī)的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.

On the whole, Brooks’s story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’s attempt to translate his tale into science.

I decided to take it one day at a time and stick with if for good.

The “new me” is more self-confident and healthier. I love how I feel now. I have more energy and feel like I’m 25 again. So why not give Weight Watchers a try if you have the same overweight problem?
