Mr. Smith, our English teacher, works hard. Every day, he spends too much time with his work. With little sleep and hardly any break, so he works from morning till night. Hard work have made him very ill. “He has ruined his healthy. We are worried about him.” That is which other teachers say. Yesterday afternoon, I paid visit to Mr. Smith. I was eager to see him, but outside her room I stopped. I had to calm myself down. Quietly I step into the room. I saw him lying in bed, looking at some of the picture we had taken together. I understood that he missed us just as many as we missed him.

It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr.Johnson’s famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.

Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.

Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena.” The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.

Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”, In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.

B. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty

C. the English weather attracts people to the British Isles

D. there is nothing special about the English weather

4.What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?

A. To convince people that the English weather is changeable.

B. To analyze misconceptions about the English weather.

C. To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.

D. To explain what English weather-speak is about.

The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed before they go to sleep.

Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the subjects (實驗對象) read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, they took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time.

When the subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. They also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half.

The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given (考慮到)the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note:“Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.”

However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (過濾) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.

1.In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to______.

A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests

B. have their blood tested per hour during the trial

C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time

D. have their sleep patterns observed all night

2.The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to______.

A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day

B. become less energetic the next morning

C. have a lot more melatonin secretion

D. fall asleep more easily after reading

3.The special software recently developed can______.

A. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading

B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength

C. remove the blue light from your devices completely

D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely

4.Which title is the best one for the text?

A. Wrong behaviors before bedtime

B. New software for night e-readers

C. No e-reading in bed before sleep

D. No games on iPad in bed

If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲學). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

1.The opening paragraph is mainly intended to _______.

A. attract the readers’ interest in the subject

B. provide some key facts about Confucius

C. show great respect for the ancient thinker

D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations

2.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students _______.

A. take an active part in Chinese competitions

B. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

C. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

D. have a great passion in studying Chinese

3.What is the best title for this passage?

A. Forgotten Wisdom in America.

B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language.

C. Old Thinker with a Big Future.

D. Chinese Culture for Westerners.

4.The passage is likely to appear in ______.

A.a biography B. a history paper

C. a newspaper D. a philosophy textbook

Some researchers, parents and teachers have suggested that high-school classes begin later in the morning to accommodate (適應) teens’ needs for more sleep. 1. However, in the meantime you’ll have to make your own adjustments. Here are some suggestions that may help you to sleep better.

Set a regular bedtime. Going to bed at the same time each night signals to your body that it’s time to sleep. 2. So try to stick as closely as you can to your sleep schedule, even on weekends.

Exercise regularly. 3. Finish exercising at least 3 hours before bedtime. Many sleep experts believe that exercising in late afternoon may actually help a person sleep.

Avoid stimulants (刺激物). Don’t drink beverages with caffeine, such as soda and coffee, after 4 pm. 4. And drinking alcohol in the evening can make a person restless and interrupt sleep.

Relax your mind. Avoid violent, scary or action movies or television shows right before bed. Reading books with active plots may also keep you from falling or staying asleep.

Create the right sleeping environment. 5. So close your curtains (and make sure they’re heavy enough to block out light) and turn down the thermostat (恒溫器). Noise can prevent people from sleeping well. Use a white-noise machine if you need to block out a noisy environment.

A. Waking up at the same time every day also helps establish sleep patterns.

B. People usually sleep best in a dark cool room.

C. Light signals to the brain that it’s time to wake up.

D. Try not to exercise right before bedtime as it can make it harder for you to fall asleep.

Eccentrics are people who have an unusual or odd personality, set of beliefs, or behavior pattern. They may or may not comprehend the standards for normal behavior in their culture. They simply don’t care about the society’s disapproval of their habits or beliefs.

Once considered socially unacceptable, eccentric people have been found to possess some positive characteristics. 1. They often have more curiosity about the world and, in many cases, are contentedly obsessed by hobbies and interests. 2. They live in a world of their own and do not worry about what others think of them. So they are usually less restricted and therefore more carefree in forming new ideas.

3. Statistics show they visit their doctors less—about once in eight to nine years, which is 20 times less than the average person. This could be partly due to their innate traits such as humor and happiness. 4. This may explain why eccentrics are, on the whole, healthier.

Psychologists therefore suggest that we pay attention to those who do not conform. It could be our aunt who has been raising pet lizards. 5. Their crazy hobby or strange sense of humor is what keeps them going. Eccentric people may seem odd, but they will likely live a happier and healthier life because they enjoy what they are doing. In fact, many of history’s most brilliant minds have displayed some unusual behaviors and habits.

A.Eccentrics are also found to be healthier.

B.According to a recent study in England, eccentrics are more creative.

C.Or it could be our best friend’s brother who wears shorts to a formal dance.

D.People may have eccentric taste in clothes, or have eccentric hobbies.

E.Psychologists also find that eccentric people do not follow conventions.

F.Such personal traits are found to play an important role in boosting the body’s immune system.

G.Psychologist Dr David Weeks mentions people with a mental illness “suffer” from their behavior while eccentrics are quite happy.
