It was a busy morning about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for an appointment at 9:30. The nurse had him take a       in the waiting area,     him it would be at least 40 minutes      someone would be able to see him. I saw him     his watch and decided, since I was     busy ---my patient didn’t     at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment. The gentleman said no and told me that he      to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his     . He told me she had been       for a while and she had a special disease. I asked if she would be      if he was a bit late. He replied that she      knew who he was, and that she had not been able to     him for five years. I was      , and asked him, “And you     go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”  He smiled and said, “She doesn’t know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back      as he left.
Now I      that in marriages, true love is     of all that is.  The happiest people don’t      have the best of everything; They just      the best use of everything they have.      isn’t about how to live through the storm,  but how to dance in the rain.

小題6:A turn up 詞組,表示“出現(xiàn)”的意思。 B. show off 是“炫耀”的意思。
D happen to do“碰巧做某事”。
9:D there she had been there 表示的是她已經(jīng)在那個nursing home 里面有一段時間了,有難度,其他幾個選項的中文意思比較模棱兩可, A. late 要遲到的是老頭子,不是他老婆。
小題14:D still表示狀態(tài)的持續(xù),B. then 表示時間先后,C. thus 表示因果。

You just want more of the story. You want to keep reading, maybe everything this author has ever ____. You wish it would never end. The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and knocked into the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. “How embarrassing! I am getting so clumsy in my old age.”
Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said, “Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment.”
Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. “I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home.”
He looked at us and said, “I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish.”
Frank’s voice dropped a bit. “When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink (畏縮) down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch (噴出) a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here, I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!”
He paused and then went on, “I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprised look on his face. I said, “Dad, I’m too old for a goodbye kiss. I’m too old for any kind of kiss.” My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. Then he turned and looked out the windshield. “ You’re right,” he said. “ You are a big boy....a man. I won’t kiss you anymore.”
Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes, as he spoke. “It wasn’t long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. It was a day when most of the fleet (船隊) stayed in, but not Dad. He had a big family to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out. He must have gotten into a strong wind and was trying to save the nets and the floats.”
I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again. “Guys, you don’t know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek…to feel his rough old face… to smell the ocean on him… to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a goodbye kiss.”

Have you ever wondered: What drives successful people? Take a look around and talk to your friends and seniors who are very successful, you will see all of them have adopted certain values which have proved vital for their success.
It is evident that successful people take initiative (主動性). When they find something needs to be done, they just do it instead of waiting. They believe that responsibility is taken, not given. They weigh immediately what has to be done and then do it with pleasure, thus strengthening their reputation.
Successful people are enthusiastic about the things they do, especially when they believe in what they are doing. They are motivated by their own satisfaction and the joy they get from doing their work. They work hard even when no one is watching and they throw themselves into their work.
They do not fear failure. Failures and disappointments in life are unavoidable. It is failure that teaches us much more than success. Successful people pick themselves up after a fall and try again with more determination and commitment and learn from each failure. They associate with those they can learn from and enjoy the company of those who appreciate their achievement.
Having good IQ often gets a person what he wants but it’s really the EQ that keeps him there and helps him enjoy a high reputation. Successful people are polite to everyone and treat others with respect. By giving respect to others, they command respect for themselves.
Another important quality of successful persons is that they never complain. It’s better to praise others and win favor with them. So instead of complaining about a situation, successful people always try to solve it.
To put it shortly, take initiative and be enthusiastic about them. Do not be afraid to fail, but get up and start again. When you do so, success will be just around the corner.

A young executive was traveling down a neighborhood street. He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed,no children appeared.Instead,a brick smashed into his door! He slammed on the brakes(make his car stop). The angry driver then jumped out of the car, caught the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting,“What was that all about and who are you?”
The young boy was apologetic.“Please,Mister...Please,I’m sorry…I didn’t know what else to do.I threw the brick because no one else would stop…”
With tears dripping down his face, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car.“It’s my brother,”he said.“He fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.”

During my high school years, the most important thing was what I was wearing to the Friday night dance and who I was taking. Although college was talked about, it was the least of my worries.
When I was graduating eighth grade and starting high school, my older brother was graduating twelfth grade and going onto college. For my graduation, he gave me a card in which he wrote, “Enjoy your four years…, they go by fast.” I remember not believe him then, but looking back…, he was right. Those four years shaped who I was as a person, pushed me to my limit and encouraged me to become an adult.
However, I was so completely absorbed in my junior and senior years of high school, that when someone spoke of college I brushed it off. I wasn't ready to leave my comfort zone of having all of my closest friends together and knowing what every single day was going to be like . Studying was something I did only AFTER I nailed my half-time dance performance. I knew my parents wanted me to go to college, so I told them I would go to commuity college (社區(qū)學(xué)院)and I didn’t worry about my SAT(美國大學(xué)入學(xué)考試)scores.
When my senior year passed and everyone graduated and went off to their own college ,I started to wish I had done the same. My friends were living away, meeting new people, discovering new places, and I was living at home and driving to and from class every day. It seemed exactly like high school. I hated it! I thought college was supposed to be different! Why didn’t I take more time to research colleges and do the same? I ended up loving college and wishing I had four years to enjoy the campus(大學(xué)校園)atmosphere instead of two.
My advice to anyone thinking about attending college is to think about it very seriously and look into all of your choices well ahead of time. Now I have graduate and I am working full time and I would do anything to go back to my high school days for a second chance!

The United States economy has dipped into economic recession (經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退). This caused discomfort and hardship in every level of society; but for many of the nation’s poor, discomfort and hardship turned into misery (苦難).
An increase in homelessness is probably the worst result of a nation’s financial disaster. About 3 million Americans were homeless because of a lack of affordable housing. Experts suggest that a family should spend no more than 30 percent of its income on housing. In fact, in some families housing costs make up 50 percent or more. An unexpected event, such as losing work or illness, can quickly push a family into homelessness.
An article in Time magazine tells a story of one such family. A young couple and their three children rented a two-bedroom apartment for about $350 a month. They could hardly go on with the husband’s $920-a-month take-home pay; so when their rent was raised to $500 a month, they could no longer make ends meet.
Another woman was found dead on a street in Washington D.C., the capital, and she died at a bus-stop across the street from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
People become homeless for different reasons. Some may not be able to pay for housing, because they have lost their job and cannot find another place they can afford. Others have mental diseases, or are addicted to drugs or alcohol, many of whom do not live with their family. And what’s more, there are not enough centers for shelter as the government doesn’t pay enough attention to this social problem.
People are making efforts to solve the problem. However, it will not be easy, because it is a personal and economical problem as well as a social problem.

I once had a teacher whose husband died suddenly of heart attack.About a week after his death, she    some of her thoughts with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight shone    the classroom windows, and when the class was nearly over, she    a few things aside on the edge of her desk and sat down.
With a    look on her face, she paused and said,“  class is over,I’d like to share with all of you a deep    which I feel is very important. Each of us is put here on    to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves.  of us knows when this fantastic experience will   .It can be taken away at any moment.Perhaps this is the God’s    of telling us that we must make the     of every single day.”
Her eyes were beginning to   ,but she went on,“So I would like you all to make me a   :From now on,on your way to school,or on your way home, find something beautiful to   .It doesn't have to be something you see.It could be a    of freshly baked  bread  floating  out  of  someone’s house,  or  it  could  be  the  sound  of  the soft    rustling(沙沙作響)the leaves in the trees….Please look for these things, and     them, for at anytime it can all be taken away.’’
The class was completely   .We all picked up our books and went out of the room silently. That   ,I observed many more beautiful things on my way home from school than usual.
Remember:Life is not    by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
