Grandpa was a carpenter (木匠). One day he was making some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤兒院) in Egypt. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He drove back to the church, but his search turned out to be fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His new glasses were heading for Africa!
Grandpa had six children and he had paid twenty dollars for the glasses that morning. “It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home. “I've been very faithful (忠誠(chéng)的) in giving my time and money to YOUR work.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on holiday in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that helped him in Egypt, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago.
“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, I had just broken my glasses. Then your boxes arrived. To my surprise, I found a pair of glasses in it and it fit me very well!”
The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but thought that the man must have confused their church with another. There were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas. Sitting quietly in the back, with tears in his eyes, Grandpa realized that God had played a big trick on him.

2.How did Grandpa feel when he found his glasses were lost?

3.Who got the glasses in the end?

C. Grandpa’s workmate.
D. The director of the orphanage.
4.The people except the author’s grandpa in the church _________.
A. sent the pair of glasses to Africa on purpose
B. knew the glasses that belonged to Grandpa
C. thought the director had made a mistake
D. were not interested in the director’s speech

When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended up in prison. I could have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn’t let that happen.
Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.
Mr. Clark was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat (抽簽); those students would go with him to Los Angles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said, “You’re all going.”
On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a best-selling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003, Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit orphanages (孤兒院). It was the most amazing experience of my life. It’s now my dream to start a group of women’s clubs one day, helping people from all backgrounds.
1.Without Mr. Clark, the writer _________.
A. might have been put into prison
B. might not have won the prize
C. might have joined a women’s club
D. might not have moved to Atlanta
2.The Essential 55 is ___________.
A. a show B. a speech
C. a classroom rule D. a book
3.How many students’ names were finally drawn out of a hat by Mr. Clark?
A. None B. Three C. Fifty-five D. All
4.In the passage, the writer intends to tell us that ___________.
A. Mr. Clark went to South Africa because he liked traveling
B. Mr. Clark helped to set up a group of women’s clubs
C. a good teacher can raise his or her students’ score
D. a good teacher has a good influence on his or her students

●Does failure really exist ?
If you believe you have failed, then you have. If you believe you don’t have the ability to succeed, then you don’t. 1. The moment you decide to give up or stop working toward your goals, failure is born.
● 2.
Most people give themselves an out without even realizing it. They are willing to work hard on reaching their goals, but only until the going gets too rough or their energy dies down. Don’t do that! 3. Never quit, never admit failure, and never lose heart.
●Don’t believe in a clear finish line for goals.
It’s a good idea to set a general timeline, but remember that something will be beyond your control. 4. If you lock yourself into a given timeline, you might make yourself feel like a failure! Instead, get a general idea of when you’d like your goal to be completed. Then take it one day at a time and focus on making progress instead of reaching the finish line in as little time as possible.
●Be sure that you don’t see difficulties as failures.
Difficulties mean only one thing: it’s not time for your goal to be completed yet. That’s it! It doesn’t mean you failed; it doesn’t mean you’re weak; it doesn’t mean you’ll never achieve your goals. 5. You’ve got to keep moving forward and find a way over, around, or through the difficulties.
A. Never give up on yourself.
B. Failure only exists in your own mind!
C. That’s exactly how failure makes us feel.
D. It simply means you have not done enough yet.
E. You can never say exactly when your goal will be reached.
F. Instead, make up your mind to make your goal happen, no matter what!
G. Work hard towards your goal, and you will be likely to get good results.

What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among competing interests. Your roommate’s need to study for an exam may take priority (優(yōu)先) over pizza. Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade.
In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our points of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not always prevail — other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position receives the attention it deserves.
Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable — to live is to persuade. Persuasion may be ethical (合乎道義的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or degrading. Persuaders may enlighten our minds or get our vulnerability(脆弱之處). Ethical persuasion, however, calls on sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now must make. Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to encourage and practice the other.
Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is necessary to society. The right to persuade and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution (美國(guó)憲法).
1. According to the passage, persuasion means ______.
A. changing others’ points of view
B. exercising power over other people
C. getting other people to consider your point of view
D. getting people to agree with you and do what you want
2. The underlined word in the second paragraph “prevail” means ______.
A. win B. fail C. speak D. listen
3.The passage states that some people object to persuasion because they think it is ______.
A. a danger to society B. difficult to do well
C. unwelcome behavior D. never successful
4.The passage mainly discusses ______.
A. that people persuade to get what they want
B. that people persuade in different ways
C. that persuasion is widely accepted and appreciated
D. that persuasion is important and it is all around us
